Jeans. . . I’m lost!

I really need to stop wearing skinnies. Sometimes they look good, but sometimes they just don’t!

I’ve tried the baggy boyfriend jeans and I just looked enormous and misshapen. I also hate high waisted jeans because they seem to press my stomach down and out, again a rather mishappen look!

Im 5ft7, a size 12, and am 38.

Any recommendations? Has anyone worked out the jeans issue?

Levi’s 501s! I’m the same age and size as you, and 1 inch taller 😊 I find them really flattering in dark grey. H&M also do a pair that I like a lot. Link isn’t working for some reason!

IvorCutler · 09/06/2022 19:34

Sorry the H&M ones are quite high waisted.

DinosaurOfFire · 09/06/2022 19:34

Urban Outfitters have some nice flared low-rise (but not super crazy low rise) jeans, I also hate high waists, they just make everything look... Odd. I am a similar age and height, and a size 10-12, I wear a waist 30 and their standard length is good on me.

EasilyDistracted77 · 09/06/2022 19:43

My favourite style are kick-flares but they are not always 'in fashion'. The flare balances out my hips and thighs. Sometimes they are available in low waist, sometimes in high-waist, but it can be tricky finding a pair which can be worn with flats/trainers.
I do tend to try Next first as they fit me best. My absolute favourite pair are 15+ years old from FCUK. They've lasted so long because I can only wear with a heel/wedge with them which I rarely do.

I think I have been no hope whatsoever, but I know how frustrating finding jeans can be, so I wish you luck!

I really like the River Island Connie jeans (mom shape)

stickybear · 10/06/2022 08:38

Biden Girlfriend jeans are good - not too baggy and not too high in the waist. I find they come up big though

TheOGCCL · 10/06/2022 14:34

I'd suggest trying slim. Next do a mid rise pair.

Then you will find the move to straight or balloon or other baggier styles easier rather than going straight from skinnies.

linenalltheway · 10/06/2022 14:37

I'm a convert to m and s sienna after a recommendation on here

RestingMurderousFace · 10/06/2022 14:41

I've been wearing combat pants a lot recently instead of jeans. Feels very late 90s but I kind of like it.

TizerorFizz · 10/06/2022 14:46

I would buy a load of M&S jeans. Keep what you like and send back the rest. I have Siennas but also liked their wide leg and flared offerings. Decent denim and various hues of blue do suit most people. I’m a big fan of darker denim but no fancy embellishments. M&S do enough to choose from. Just recently their long length has come up very very long!

xogossipgirlxo · 10/06/2022 14:48

I like slim fit. I started to avoid anything that says skinny. They still aren't baggy or anything, but just bit more relaxed, so they don't look like leggings.

cherrymax · 10/06/2022 14:49

I wear 501s too. Not to high waisted but kind of mom jeans.

cherrymax · 10/06/2022 14:50

Meant to say cropped ones.

Rina66 · 10/06/2022 14:52

Agree with M & S, I wear the Lily, love them and have all the colours! They were £19.50 last summer but they're now £22.50 🙄

I do like the H & M ones up thread though...

I like straight jeans, I wear them with turn ups to whatever length I want. I also like short slim fit jeans. I never wore skinnies as I hated the tightness round the back of the knee.

Try as I might I can not get my head round wearing bootcut jeans again, however much I loved them first time round.

ScoobyDoNot · 10/06/2022 14:53

I have the h&m straight ankle jeans and they are hands down the best pair of jeans I own (and I have 70+ pairs inc Levi's!)
The denim is soft and they are so comfortable and flattering.

And the best part, they're only £17.99!!

VWBZ · 10/06/2022 14:58

I wear straight jeans turned up but I also have some boot cut / flares and I love them, especially the ones that are frayed at the bottom. I'm small, top heavy & size 10 to 12 and I think they suit me.

I feel weird in skinnies now.

NatriumChloride · 10/06/2022 15:00

Have you tried jeans from 7 for all mankind? I love their slim fit jeans. They have a mid rise and the “slim illusion” ones are lovely and soft and have a great fit!

bigbluebus · 10/06/2022 15:13

@TizerorFizz Glad it's not just me that thinks there jeans are coming up long. I've always bought jeans from M&S because they did a long length but the last pair I bought were too long. Thought maybe I was shrinking though as I'm heading towards 60 😆

bigbluebus · 10/06/2022 15:14

Their not there obviously

TizerorFizz · 10/06/2022 17:02

I’ve just bought two pairs in my usual long and they are a good 2ins longer than earlier pairs @bigbluebus

Im 5ft9ins so I guess 6ft ladies are now catered for! However try several pairs. Haven’t found ankle grazers to be extra long!

N0tfinished · 10/06/2022 17:10

I got these ones from Mango. Legs aren't too baggy. They're have a defined waist so if you're more apple shaped they might not suit but I was pleased with them. More of a traditional denim than the super soft stretchy kind.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/06/2022 17:24

My favourite jeans are from primark despite trying all sorts of price ranges.

Their vintage slim straight ones, about £15. They are reasonably high waisted but not ridiculous, fitted around the hips and thigh and then enough of a straight leg that they can't be confused for skinny jeans but not baggy.

I think the trick for me is definitely a slim straight leg and not just the straight.

Stradivarius slim mom jeans are also quite good for the price and have stretch.

FinallyHere · 10/06/2022 19:26

Another vote for trying a range from M&S. Their click and collect service allows you to have a wide range of styles, lengths, colours and sizes delivered to a local store, where you can try them all on, return any you don't like on the spot and keep any you find you like.

Genius

Only downside is that the bootcut kind I like have loads of stretch so I don't notice putting on weight they way I would with cotton only jeans.

TizerorFizz · 10/06/2022 22:10

Have them delivered to your house! Try them with different shoes and tops. You don’t need to go near a store.
