Silver vs gold hardware on bags

Can I ask for any thoughts on silver vs gold hardware on bags?

I'm currently looking for a new handbag and it seems like lots of brands only offer gold hardware. I know gold is very in right now but I wear exclusively silver jewellery as that's what suits my skin tone. I look quite sick if I wear gold! I hadn't thought much about this before but I think the mixing of gold and silver would bother me a bit, although reduces my options quite a lot.

I also think some gold hardware looks a bit tacky, although lots of people are saying it's more formal than silver...

Am I overthinking or is anyone else bothered by this?

I only wear silver and so only buy bags with silver hardware. I do think gold on bags can look nice if the bag is the right colour. Black with gold I don’t like at all but some colours look good with gold, but I wouldn’t buy them

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/06/2022 12:43

I don't like gold hardware at all and only wear silver too.

ThreeonaHill · 08/06/2022 12:43

I thought it was just me. I hate gold on bags (and belts). I much prefer the metal to look like what it is, stainless steel, chrome etc, than to pretend to be gold, which it clearly isn't. Plus I have the same issue with jewellery as you OP.

honeyfox · 08/06/2022 12:43

I'm with you, I go for silver or gunmetal hardware on bags as I just don't like gold at all. It is difficult though as most brands do gold.

Glitterspy · 08/06/2022 12:44

This bothers me too. DH bought me a beautiful bag but it has gold hardware (I wear silver too) and it just bugs me. I only use it rarely!

ExtremelyDedicated · 08/06/2022 12:53

I only buy bags with silver hardware too, I never wear yellow gold jewellery as it doesn't suit me and don't like it on bags either.

MermaidEyes · 08/06/2022 12:55

I don't like gold at all, on jewellery or bags, silver only. Silver always looks classier in my opinion, even real gold can sometimes have that tacky look.

maroonballoon · 08/06/2022 12:56

Good to know I'm not alone in this! I feel a bit more justified in my search for a silver hardware bag now

I agree

womaninatightspot · 08/06/2022 13:05

Completely agree. I thought it was just me. I have a lovely brown leather bag with gold hardware and I never use it as my jewellery is silver.

ImAvingOops · 08/06/2022 13:10

I like both but find I use the bags with silver hardware much more

SabrePrattler · 08/06/2022 13:16

I only wear silver jewellery but for some reason prefer gold hardware on bags.

rocketfromthecrypt · 08/06/2022 13:17

I hate gold hardware and will do what I can to avoid it, but bag manufacturers seem to love gold/yellow metal which usually looks so tacky to me.

DiscoDelilah · 08/06/2022 13:19

I am the other way round and almost always wear gold jewellery and hardware on belts and bags!

Definitely a common thing to have a preference in terms of hardware on accessories. I would avoid mixing metals as well, so I wouldn't wear a bag with silver jewellery with gold jewellery or vice versa

ThePoetsWife · 08/06/2022 13:21

Not just handbags - shoes as well 😬

DiscoDelilah · 08/06/2022 13:24

Yes, agree re shoes too. I had some strappy sandals which were burgundy with a chunky, silver buckle. I had to sell them as they didn't go with anything, due to me not wearing silver

BarbaraofSeville · 08/06/2022 13:28

I don't like gold and do find that it restricts what I can buy if most items have gold hardware. I don't care what's in fashion. If I don't like it, I won't buy it.

I recently bought a crossbody bag and got one from here mostly because it was one of the few places selling that style of bag with silver hardware.

handbagsandholidays · 08/06/2022 13:36

You're not alone with this but I do think gold/silver depends on the colour of the bag. For example I prefer gold with brown but like silver with red as I think gold can look tacky with red xx

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 08/06/2022 13:44

And buttons on clothes.

jeaux90 · 08/06/2022 13:51

I think it definitely depends on skin tone.

I've recent had my colours done by a personal stylist company and I was shocked that I should have been wearing gold instead after all these years of wearing silver (misses point of thread)

jay55 · 08/06/2022 13:51

I have a mix but much prefer silver.

Totally this

Some of these posters are a little old fashioned 🤭 It’s trendy to mix metals this days. I like silver jewellery and gold hardware (esp with black bags) and wouldn’t hesitate to mix. I could throw some gold into my jewellery stack to make it look deliberate.

Pennox · 08/06/2022 14:01

I have both but prefer silver. I thibk it depends on the colour of the bag. Cool colours look better with silver I think and warm are OK with gold. I've currently got a navy bag with silver and a burgundy one with gold.

It's really old fashioned to follow fashion "rules", but wearing something you aren't into because someone else has said it's trendy is equally silly 🤭
