In desperate need of help. Getting engaged next week and I don’t know where to start with getting my nails done - is it best to get gel or acrylic? What’s the difference?
what colour should I go for?

Need some advice please mumsnetters

How exciting. Acrylics are plastic nails attached on top of your own nails, filed to the shape you want and then painted or gelled. Gel is just a type of polish that is cured under an ultraviolet light and lasts a long time.

justfiveminutes · 28/05/2022 19:09

I'd do acrylics if your nails are very short. They last a long time but eventually have to be removed as your own nail grows and a gap forms. Gels - on your own nail or an acrylic one - last about two weeks.

Getoffmyshoes · 28/05/2022 19:30

This is mumsnet, so no doubt you’ll have several posters in a minute how the hell you can be getting engaged next week 😂

I personally find acrylics quite tacky so would go for a nice French gel manicure. I think something classic is your best bet.

Ha! I was thinking that 🤣

DelilahBucket · 28/05/2022 22:09

I would get a nice BIAB manicure. Acrylics wreck your nails, it took 12 weeks for mine to recover, and you don't want to detract from your ring, so just something subtle.

FusionChefGeoff · 28/05/2022 22:13

Indulge me - how does one know when one is going to get engaged next week??

MarmaladeLime · 28/05/2022 22:14

I'd go for gels. Simple classy colour, don't want to distract from the massive rock.

I imagine it's been discussed that they'll get engaged on holiday/3rd anniversary etc

MarmaladeLime · 28/05/2022 22:15

Or maybe OP is doing the asking?

NoToLandfill · 28/05/2022 22:16

Gels with a lovely colour. Acrylics is a bit old fashioned now. Congratulations!
Use hand moisturiser so your hands look good in the photos, as well as the nails

This, especially if getting your nails done isn't a regular thing. Also I'd go for a nice pastel palette for this time of year. Maybe a baby blue or green?

Exactly what I was wondering!! That's not usually how it works

User3568975431146 · 28/05/2022 22:20

Keep your nails natural, there's nothing worse than fake nails, they're very tacky.

Have a nice manicure of your own nails and leave it like that, it'll look much better than the plastic not so fantastic that are all the rage right now.

Well at least one party will know as they will be asking..how do you know that's not OP?

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 28/05/2022 22:28

I obviously can't speak for the op, but in many cultures, including mine, an engagement is a religious ceremony which can be as big as a wedding and planned months in advance. So, yes, it can be how it works.
Sorry for the derail, op.

Maybe they're picking the ring together next week?

Borracha · 29/05/2022 06:27

Maybe the OP is the one doing the proposing?
Maybe the OP is from a culture where engagement is a formal occasion so planned in advance?
Maybe the OP and their partner have agreed in advance that they will get engaged on a certain occasion?
Maybe OP is expecting a proposal based on hints or finding some evidence?
Maybe people should be more open minded and realise that not everyone’s life is the same as theirs?

Congratulations OP. I would go for a regular manicure (so not gel or acrylic) in a nice natural pale pink so your hands look well kept but don’t detract from the ring!

princessbear80 · 29/05/2022 09:00

Congratulations! You’ll be showing off the ring and looking at it yourself for weeks (months!) to come so go for a gel as it’ll last longer than regular polish.

PenelopeGarseeya · 29/05/2022 09:06

I agree with PP, go for a gel in a fairly neutral shade to compliment your skin colour. Have them done fairly close to the day to avoid regrowth. And as a PP said moisturise well.

not to everyones taste but I think the ring needs to be the star of the show!

I'd go gel too as it will last longer than regular polish and less risk of chipping. Colour - well a lot depends on your skintone, but pinks, corals etc are nice. I'd personally avoid blues, greens etc or dark colours which look better in winter.

EggRollsForever · 29/05/2022 10:35

I would go for gel overlays as they can even out any differences in length and give you the perfect nails. As regards the colour do what you want and is your style - forget what the bridal magazines say.

Tippexy · 29/05/2022 10:38

Oh dear 😂

But they are right, if you’ve agreed to “get engaged next week” then you are already engaged!

ElenaSt · 29/05/2022 13:03

I'd go for something understated
