Clinique Super City Block -discontinued.

Yourearealboy · 28/05/2022 07:38

I have used Super City block for years, I see it’s now discontinued and replaced with Superdefence City Block 50 -which is a mineral and chemical sunscreen. The old one was just mineral. Has anyone who also used Super City Block tried this new one? I’m wondering how they compare.
TIA.

I too have been using Super City Block for years. I swear by it. I'm so sad it has been discontinued...why Clinique??
I have just purchased the new version. It looks, smells and feels more like a sticky sunscreen but I will persevere for now and see how it goes.

That's disappointing news. It's such an iconic product. It is becoming harder and harder to find a mineral sunblock. I cannot bear the stench of the chemical sunscreens.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/08/2022 12:04

I've got the new one and like it, but didn't try the old one so don't know how they compare.

Yourearealboy · 07/08/2022 15:52

Oh no. Not happy to hear it’s sticky like a typical sun screen. I did finally order one and it was delivered yesterday (so odd this thread finally had a reply after it was delivered!) but I haven’t opened it yet because I still have a tiny bit of the old one left. I will be cutting the end off the tube and getting every last bit of product out before I move on to the new one but I’m not looking forward using it at all.

@Yourearealboy how did you get on with the new product? I’ve used Super City Block for years, so bought 4 when it was on offer last year, and am only now running out. So cross it has been discontinued! Have you found an alternative ?

Niftythrifter · 12/01/2023 12:19

I’ve not used it for years but you could try this too www.boots.com/-ambre-solaire-sensitive-face-and-neck-sun-cream-spf50plus-50ml-10153830

Yourearealboy · 12/01/2023 15:03

@Quincesorbet
I HATE it.
I actually came back on to search for alternatives that had been recommended.

It’s simultaneously sticky and greasy. Leaves your face looking like an oil slick but it’s impossible to put powder on for half an hour to minimise shine as it just clumps in the wet stickiness.
To top it off, after an hour pottering in the garden in mid September (when it was cool so I was wearing a jumper) I actually burnt my face Angry <<<how red my face was!
I created an account in the Clinique site just so I could leave a review and noted others had burnt their faces too! I have walked around in full sun in the super city block for years with no issues so I’m really annoyed with Clinique selling something that offers no protection.

Nifty I don’t think it’s a mineral face protector but thank you, I will take a look.

@Yourearealboy thanks for that information, you’ve saved me from wasting my money.! I used Super Cityblock on ski holidays without burning, it is the perfect product.
@Niftythrifter thanks for the suggestion, I have used that Amber Solaire cream on holiday, but it’s not tinted and it feels like sun cream whereas the city block feels like light makeup.
Maybe I need to find a BB cream with a high SPF - seems like I may actually have to go shopping somewhere with a department store to try things out …

DanglingMod · 14/01/2023 07:49

I started using City Block just before it was discontinued. It was amazing so am very annoyed.

I am allergic to all chemical sunscreen (eyes just pour and pour) so will have to go back to La Roche Posay antihelios which is mineral and I had been using for years and which is great, but I had marginally preferred the City Block.

Porridgeislife · 14/01/2023 07:57

That’s so annoying, it’s been a few years but I used to love Super City Block.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Altruist Face SPF 50 on Amazon - it’s chemical but genuinely non-greasy/non-shiny. I have a baby who constantly has her hands on my face and I can’t stand the feeling of greasy sunscreen when she does that.

I also really like IT Cosmetics CC cream which is SPF 50 for some colour.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/01/2023 08:12

I used it till I found out they test on animals and you can imagine how they test sunblock on animals.

I use dermalogicas spf30 mineral now. Non oily too.

Yourearealboy · 14/01/2023 10:06

Sadly way out of my price range fluffycloud I hadn’t even realised Clinique tested on animals! It never occurred to me 😕

I will look into the other suggestions, thank you all.

The best spf 50 IMO is Vivea shine control.

it’s not like make up like City Block but it’s the least greasy product I can find.

It doesn’t sting the eyes either.

This is the problem isn’t it, I’ve got oily skin the last thing I need is extra glycerin lobbed at it for hydration. Breaks me out every single time.

They assume sun block = two weeks in Egypt with no sunshade.

Ultrasun are cruelty free and do mineral blocks.

Quincesorbet · 14/01/2023 15:12

Has anyone tried Trinny London BFF which is SPF 30 and has different shades? I’m really looking for something that combines sun protection and a light tinted coverage to even out the skin, after applying moisturiser. I then just add a little foundation over my nose area if needed. I don’t give myself enough time in the mornings to apply 4 or 5 layers of different products to my face!

AdelaideRo · 14/01/2023 18:35

Ultraviolette Lean Screen - also mineral. Similar texture.

It's a bit more expensive than super city block but not much.
Liberty/ Space NK sell. Not sure re: cult beauty.

Yourearealboy · 15/01/2023 12:44

Ultraviolette Lean Screen. It’s £11 more expensive, a bit too pricey for me.

I’ve just ordered Nudestix daily mineral veil.
It’s only a 30spf but it’s winter so it will at least give me something to use until I have the opportunity to go into a store and spend however long trying testers.

I will report back once I’ve given it a good go.

@Yourearealboy how did you get on? Another distraught Cityblocker here looking for a replacement

Toddlerone · 12/03/2023 16:43

Another disappointed one here, so I've gone back to Biore Watery Essence
www.skincupid.co.uk/products/kao-biore-uv-aqua-rich-watery-essence-spf-50-pa-new-formula-50ml

Yourearealboy · 12/03/2023 16:57

@Geriatricmillenial the Nudestix is not as hideous as the new superdefense City Block. It’s okay for now and, as long as the spf works well, I will buy it again until I find something I really like to replace super city block.
Its a tad greasy, & takes a fair bit of hand soap to wash it off my fingers after application which I find odd. I bought the cool one as the reviews I read about the tinted ones all said they were too dark. I just add a tiny bit of foundation to it otherwise it leaves me looking a little pale. It will do for now.

I will take a look at that one Toddlerone thanks for the suggestion.

It looks like Marks & Spencers might have the original City block in stock.

Nixbox · 12/03/2023 18:57

Ren Clean Screen is nice on my oily skin. Make up goes on nicely over the top but it’s spf 30.
I have also just tried the tinted version of a Bondi Sands spf which feels nice on, but I haven’t been in the sun to try it properly.
