Wedding dress code - ‘trendy’ ????????

JangolinaPitt · 26/05/2022 14:13

What do I wear?
Context is afternoon/evening summer
Gsy marriage (two men in their 40s)
Guests apart from family mostly men.
I am 50s/size 10…
Normally dress youngish so anything will do but what the hell does it mean?
(And yes, I will ask them for examples but guess they are only thinking about male attire….)

Sounds like it is more permission or invitation for their mostly male guests to step out of the standard wedding look for men which would be “classic” rather than “trendy”. I’m sure any usual wedding look for women would fit the bill.

merryhouse · 26/05/2022 14:52

apparently prairie frumpers are all the rage Grin

JangolinaPitt · 26/05/2022 17:50

'Trendy' is a word I use, but I don't think it's used by people who really are trendy Grin

I would just go for your most 'young' outfit that's suited to a wedding.

dudsville · 26/05/2022 21:54

I wouldn't have a clue what they meant, but if they give you a notion of what they have in mind for men then you can extrapolate.

Lookingoutside · 26/05/2022 23:04

Jumpsuit, heals, big earrings, bright lipstick.

Justmuddlingalong · 26/05/2022 23:07

Dress codes for weddings can fuck off.

rookiemere · 26/05/2022 23:07

I would wear whatever you like and you feel good in that is event appropriate.
Unless the couple are planning to pay for your outfit, I detest this new trend of trying to dictate what guests wear to a wedding.

Crazykefir · 26/05/2022 23:09

Night out attire?

Fizbosshoes · 26/05/2022 23:10

Oh god, I would find that really stressful and then feel like I was being judged on my trendiest (or lack of) when I turned up

MarmiteCoriander · 26/05/2022 23:22

I'd hate that too! Once had a wedding invite with dress code 'glamorous'! Got accused by another guest of being over dressed!

What do you normally wear to a wedding? I agree that a jumpsuit, great heels or wedges and accessories could be classed as 'trendy'.

londonmummy1966 · 26/05/2022 23:22

I can think of little more trendy than the "cottage core" prairie dress - all the links blow are courtesy of a recent Vogue so must be the height of on trend dressing.

You could go for long and white in the hope someone less in the know will mistake you for a bride

or full on little house on the prairie - the netaporter is an especial horror so especially trendy ......

Maxi skirt, sparkly top, white sneakers and a leather jacket.

JangolinaPitt · 27/05/2022 06:58

Oooh thanks for the ideas!!!!
I’ve seen some jumpsuits snd I’d go for that but as I wouldn’t wear it anywhere else will look for something thing cheap in Primark. The prairie stuff I can’t stand 😀😀😀
Thinking about it I think it is to stop the men looking too stuffy -but putting ‘dress code:not square was maybe deemed a bit pointed 😀

I definitely think you're right with a jumpsuit but also think you should have one absolutely bonkers accessory... like a child's lunchbox for a bag or something.
If questioned, you'd just raise an elegant eyebrow and say: "But the invitation said... Oh! Perhaps this is just too cutting edge; I do love stealth chic though".

5128gap · 27/05/2022 09:50

Silk cuffed ankle cargo pants with heeled sandals and bardot, batwing or cropped top.
Blazer dress.
Man's suit with t shirt under and brogues.

Tryhard40 · 27/05/2022 10:25

I doubt they mean what is "de rigour" right now in fashion circles ie those hideous cottagecore dresses. Gay "trendy" i would assume means funky, bright, a bit glitzy, glam etc. I would imagine I was going on a night out in manchester's gay village!
If you fancy a dress I'd be thinking something like these :

Or this purple velvet Norma Kamali jumpsuit:

Wedding dress code - ‘trendy’ ????????
CornishGem1975 · 27/05/2022 10:27

That's one of the wankiest things I've ever heard. Who has the nerve to put that as a dress code.

skgnome · 27/05/2022 10:33

I would say, think very dressy night out, not your typical day wedding outfit
im assuming they are encouraging make guests to think more Harry Styles, less black suit
so whatever you feel comfortable - just don’t go very classic garden wedding

JudgeRindersMinder · 27/05/2022 10:36

They want their guest photos to reflect their perception of themselves. Fuck that!

DisappearingGirl · 27/05/2022 10:37

'Trendy' is a word I use, but I don't think it's used by people who really are trendy

Exactly! I say "trendy" but I always laugh at myself as I don't think most people have said it since the 80s. I am not trendy.

I would hope they mean "you don't need to dress formally". I hope they don't mean "you must wear the latest trends" as that would be putting a lot of pressure on their guests!

Candleabra · 27/05/2022 10:40

Fizbosshoes · 26/05/2022 23:10

Oh god, I would find that really stressful and then feel like I was being judged on my trendiest (or lack of) when I turned up

Me too!
Trendy is so subjective. And probably if you think you are, you’re not.
Reminds me of people who call themselves “quirky”.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/05/2022 10:46

YY to a jumpsuit with heels and a decent bag
NN to a mother of the bride style dress with matching bolero, fascinator and sensible low heel

absolutely no no no to the prairie chic posted upthread, unless the brief is “frumpy amish”

I think if it’s mostly a gay wedding then it’s a chance to let men dress a bit more flamboyantly than the standard boring suit

Shakeupandwakeup · 27/05/2022 10:48

I'd interpret that as wearing your favourite slightly OTT party clothes rather than the usual formal tasteful attire people choose for a wedding. More colourful or avant garde or theatrical.

Mrcpy · 27/05/2022 10:50

Terrible dress code!

But this would fit the bill and be fun to wear.
