Super lightweight breathable waterproof

Plump82 · 14/05/2022 14:30

I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I can't find anything. I'm after a really lightweight, breathable waterproof.

I have a couple of seasalt waterproofs and a regatta one but they make me roasting and I really need something I can wear now it's milder. Ideally something a little longer so that it cover my bum!

Any recommendations?

I like the Mountain warehouse one and had seen it but looks like it would still be too warm. Not keen on the M&S one and I have a Trespass one which claims to be breathable and isn't.

It will only truly be waterproof and breathable if it's GORE-TEX

THIS - I have a waterproof from Trespass, it's waterproof to 5000mm (not Goretex), the water penetrated after three hours of standing in torrential rain at the zoo (we pre-booked tickets, couldn't get a refund so went despite the weather!).

Plump82 · 14/05/2022 16:03

I'll have a look at Gor-tex. Forgot all about that and my husband wears Gor-tex all the time!

I’ve got this Rab jacket I’m 5’7” and it covers my bum. It’s very lightweight and comes in a few colours. I would go a size up.

Another brand my husband has! Should have just asked him 😃
I like that and only 5ft 2 so would be a good length on me.

I have a berghaus one. Breathable, very waterproof and has so far lasted for years, and still going strong.

This isn't true. Other membranes such as eVent also work.

OP - basically, you need to buy a brand with a decent outdoor pedigree to get what you need. Jackets designed for fell/trail running in tend to be very light and breathable, so would be a good bet. I fell run in a Rab jacket; Montane, Berghaus, Inov8 etc. also make good ones.

Trespass is probably not going to cut it if you want genuine breathability and light weight.

ProperVexed · 14/05/2022 16:26

@GaladrielHiggins Does that Arab jacket scrunch up small ( or in its own pocket) so I can throw it in a rucksack? I'm after a waterproof to go over my Arab down jacket which is a thing of Devine beauty.

ProperVexed · 14/05/2022 16:27

Or even divine!!

It does pack small as it’s nice and thin but I don’t think you can fold it into its own pocket like a packamac

The best lightweight waterproof jackets are made from technical fabric such as Pertex or Gortex. Having said that, I’ve got one of These Uniqlo jackets and it’s pretty good.

I wear a Rab packable. Works well and not too warm.

This is great to know. I'm fed up being a hot mess but being in Scotland do need a decent waterproof even in the summer.

Errrrr.... Arcteryx is the obvious answer here.

RicitosdeOro · 14/05/2022 17:44

I think the commuter jacket from Protected Species would fit your requirements. I have one of their jackets and they are outstanding in rainy Scottish weather. The water literally just pours off the fabric, even after hours.

check it out here: Jacket

I actually want to buy another one - one of the shorter ones- for summer love them so much.

they’re a fab brand - all made from recyclable material. My husband scoffed because it isn’t goretex but he was pretty impressed after seeing how effective it is.

thevampirelestat · 14/05/2022 21:07

I've got a Didriksons light rain jacket, very pleased with how waterproof it is. It's held up in some torrential rain in Ireland! But expensive, but you can get the previous season ones for cheaper on places like Zalando.
