what a ridiculous thing to do

addler · 13/05/2022 12:41

PP isn't saying that's why you've had fillers done. They're saying that looking more sexually desirable is the main reason that women feel they need to change parts of their body to address insecurities or self confidence issues. We live in a patriarchal society and have been conditioned since children that we need to look a certain way and if you follow it to the roots they all tend to lead back to what men find sexually attractive. It doesn't matter if you're attracted to men or women, that conditioning is there.

The pressure or societal norm to shave your legs, underarms and pubic hair, have big boobs and arse and a small waist and big lips is because it's attractive to men. If we grew up in a world where having a lot of body hair was desirable do you think women would remove it? I shave my legs and underarms because I like the feel. But would I think there was anything wrong with the feel of hairy legs if I hadn't been brought up thinking that? I don't feel that way about my eyebrows or the hair on my head.

If thin lips were seen as desirable or attractive then nobody would get fillers, because there would be nothing to be insecure about. I'm not saying you shouldn't get them, I'm not opposed to cosmetic surgery at all, I would like to have my boobs done at some point as they didn't develop properly during puberty and I'm insecure about them- but I know that that's because boobs of a certain shape and/or size are what's considered attractive. I think it's important to understand and recognise that the internal pressure we put on ourselves to need to look a certain way comes from deeply entrenched external sources.

Hmm there were paragraphs in that when I was typing it, so I'm guessing the app messed them up. Apologies for the wall of text

Tagliatellme · 13/05/2022 12:47

If you're going to have it done, don't let a nurse do it. They may have done a 1 day course but that's it. Go to a dental or plastic surgeon. At least they will have studied the anatomy of the face in minute detail.

Angrymum22 · 13/05/2022 12:52

Even the thickest lips narrow when you smile.
Also am I the only one wondering which lips you were having filled when you mentioned midwife.
Please don’t see a beautician or nurse they may give injections but they do not have degree level knowledge of the peri oral area. See a dentist or cosmetic surgeon. They spend many years studying facial anatomy. They have a true working knowledge of the nerve and blood supply in this area of the body.

Billandben444 · 13/05/2022 12:53

@addler I got the paragraphs.
A very good post as well!

Angrymum22 · 13/05/2022 18:09

addler excellent post.
Just to add, I asked my teenage son (nearly 18) what he thought of blown up lips, he laughed and said they look ridiculous. He does not think they make the wearer more attractive and feels like most add ons ( makeup, push up bras etc ) they are temporary and frankly a false representation of the woman who has them.
Also I have just had breast surgery necessitated by breast cancer (therauputic mammoplasty where the go in through the nipple to remove the tumour and rearrange the breast) it bloody hurts and there is a massive loss of sensation in the nipple which is due to surgery not cancer. I have had a brilliant resit but would have preferred to keep the sensation in my nipple.

always looks fake. See coleen Rooney

Here we go. It does not always look fake. It looks fake when it looks fake. When it looks good, it just looks like slightly fuller lips

BeautifulWar · 13/05/2022 18:11

@addler sums it up perfectly and with much more patience then I have!

Worldgonecrazy · 13/05/2022 10:50

@GeminiTwin you have a lovely smile but your lips still look ‘done’.

Its not about tearing down women trying to fix insecurity. If we want to fix insecurity surely addressing the root cause is the best long term solution? Persuading women they need surgery, fake eyelashes, fake tan, fake nails, and to photoshop every photo before publishing on social media, is massively harmful and just increases the insecurity.

You are still insecure about your lips, that’s why you get them done. If you were able to fix that insecurity you would save a lot of money.

It suits the media and beauty industry to keep women insecure and constantly change the beauty ideal. I dread to think where it will go next, as it seems to have become more mainstream to undergo invasive and extreme techniques.

When I see the photoshopped photos of younger women it makes me feel very sad that they feel the need to do this. It’s almost as if everything that young women do for beauty is focused on what it will look like in photos rather than what it looks like in real life.

Her lips do not look done. Get off it. She looks great. Lips come in all manner of shapes and sizes. I have a friend whose natural lips are massively upturned at the top abs get top lip is much bigger than the bottom. Everyone thinks they have been done...until they see her kids. They all have it. Fake lips look fake. Well done lips look like slightly fuller lips. Every time this thread topic comes up people post pictures and posters will say 'fake. Sooooo obvious' only ti he told that the lips in the photo are natural. People see what they want to. But obviously no one can say they always look fake as NO ONE knows everyone in the works and what their lips are like. Won't stop people saying they do

dumdumduuuummmmm · 13/05/2022 18:15

BeautifulWar · 13/05/2022 12:13

Respectfully, GTFO with that vile mindset

It's not my mindset! Where do you think this 'look' has come from?

What 'look'? You don't seem to realise that thousands of women have small amounts injected in and look completely normal. Do you honestly think that the over inflated lips is what everyone gets done?

dumdumduuuummmmm · 13/05/2022 18:16

standoctor · 13/05/2022 12:40

100%
what a ridiculous thing to do
be who you are

Do I take it you cut your hair yourself, don't wear makeup and wear clothes until they fall apart and then buy more functional ones? Because if you are doing anything else you should ask yourself why?

krill · 13/05/2022 18:18

I'd be surprised if the OP returned.

The OP wasn't asking for opinions on whether it was a good idea, or what the menfolk, young or old, thought . She has, presumably, made an informed choice with a reputable medical practitioner and already has an appointment booked.

krill · 13/05/2022 18:21

My after the opinions of the menfolk (seriously?) hasn't appeared.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 13/05/2022 18:23

I think if you have tiny lips it can look fine to just take them to normal sort of size. It’s when people go nuts and keep filling and filling it looks awful. I had it done to try and plump out some scars I have on my lips. I already have big lips and it didn’t really look right. It dissolved really fast so it wasn’t a big deal. Go for it op but just don’t go mad!

krill · 13/05/2022 18:25

I'll try again. Anything in parentheses, in this case an eye roll, about what the men think 🙄, has disappeared. I think Mumsnet is having formatting problems. On the desktop not app.

Watapalava · 13/05/2022 18:46

you can defo tell Gemini has had her lips done by the shine on the top lip - plus we haven’t seen a side pic where she’s not smiling which will be the give away but regardless they defo look done

That's all good, dont mind if they 'defo look done'
Here's the side picture.
What I do mind is having my previous Tesco value lip that had zero volume and totally disappeared when I smiled. Much happier now. Not hugely insecure about my previous lips, just prefer them how they are now. Not trying to compete with ANY beauty standards. Just out here doing me and feeling good about myself 🙌🏻

Have scribbled out my work lanyard.

this is my issue with these procedures. Because of breast cancer, I had a mastectomy five years ago.
i felt that having had a toxic, invasive disease invading my body, I did not even want reconstruction (which would have required further surgeries every ten years or so).

i just don’t understand why anyone would want to inject alien substances into their body by choice.

Projecting a bit there.

I take it you only eat an organic plant based diet, have no aluminium in your home, don't use a microwave and don't ever walk into a busy city?

Probably not.

There are 'alien' and toxic things everywhere. That are a LOT more damaging than putting hyaluronic acid into your body.

krill · 13/05/2022 20:41

It's hyaluronic acid. Naturally occurring, especially in skin area.
