Help for work event

Help! I need an outfit for a work event and I have been trying to buy things for weeks and nothing is right. It’s an event where I will be the centre of attention, there will be photos and video. I need an outfit that is professional and authoritative but not corporate (no power suits).

I know exactly what I want – a pair of tailored 7/8 trousers and a structured elbow length or long-sleeved top with a blazer. But I can’t seem to get the right thing - I keep buying items that are either too corporate or too casual and nothing works together. I’m size 12 (maybe 10 for tops) and quite pear-shaped.

What I want

  • Structured, tailored, easy to wear and flattering. Elegant and authoritative but ideally also at least a bit stylish.
  • The brands that I think would work – but where I can’t find anything in my size/in stock/suitable – are MaxMara, Sezane, Cos etc. I liked the look of the Sezane Christie blazer but it was out of stock in my size. I’ve ordered a couple of outfits from Libby London that have been disastrous – horrible fabrics and ill-fitting on tops and bottom so won’t try them again.
  • The trousers are probably my biggest problem. I need exact recommendations as I’ve been searching for ages – I’ve tried Boden Richmonds which are often recommended but they are really unflattering on me – saggy at the knees and the cotton fabric feels too casual. I want something really smart/sharply tailored - probably a wool blend. I have been considering Theory and Joseph but their trousers look quite slim fit around the hips so probably won’t work for me. If anyone can advise on their fit that would be great.
  • Colourwise - I never wear black, so navy trousers are ideal. Bright colours are fine - any blues/greens are usually good for my colouring but I'm willing to consider anything!

What I’ve got

  • Decent shoe options (brogues, oxblood loafers or Cheaney’s Chelsea boots – though these are probably too casual).
  • A couple of possible trousers options that I like and are flattering (Cos wool culottes and Hobbs cropped wide leg trousers) but are probably too casual. I can’t get the shapes to work with tops/blazers that I have as they both need a more tailored / cropped top to balance out the wide bottom.
  • A Wyse cord blazer that might work over a structured top and more tailored trousers to bring down the overall smartness level, but is too casual with my existing options.
I’m happy to throw money at this – obviously I'll be delighted if I don’t have to but for the purposes of the question you can assume the individual limit on any item is high (£200+) as I might opt for e.g. expensive blazer or smart top if it will work with the trousers that I have.

Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this wall of text. I’ve been trying to find something suitable for weeks! I’d be so grateful for any help or suggestions of specific trousers/ blazers/ tops that would work together.

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 04/05/2022 12:52

bugger - just re-read and saw you said you don't wear black. I suspect I also have a more ...not sure how to say it without horrible stereotype connotations, but 'girly' taste than you, so you may wish to ignore my Karen Millen wrap jacket suggestion anyway!

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 04/05/2022 12:55

For a cheaper option - Vinted, Reiss, navy blazer - Reiss Womens jacket - Vinted

whatnottowear · 04/05/2022 13:11

Wow! Thank you so much! There are some promising options there - the Hobbs wool gael trousers are definitely worth a try. The lilysilk top is something I would certainly wear (though I think I want a top that has sleeves/lining for this occasion).

Also, i didn't realise that "work event" was misleadingly vague - it's not a prize ceremony or evening event but more a conference (with a prominent role). The evening wear options wouldn't work for this - but I love the shapes/colours. Thanks so much for all the suggestions.

Mint green cropped blazer from French Connection - French Connection Indi Cropped Blazer, Palm Green at John Lewis & Partners

ah - that's helpful. I will investigate. Sorry for the immense amount of links. I am having a terribly slow day at work... 😏
Lily silk have a great range of gorgeous tops. Here's some that have nice detailing that would work under a blazer

Cozy Stand Collar Long Sleeves Womens Silk Blouse (lilysilk.com)

Romantic Stand Collar Silk Shirt (lilysilk.com)

MIM 2 in 1 Silk Shirt (lilysilk.com)

I haven't tried any Hobbs trousers, but their dresses are always a good fit on me and I'm a classic hourglass, so they do seem to tailor for a decent sized bottom with a smaller waist, which should work for a pear shape.

whatnottowear · 04/05/2022 13:18

I'd not tried Wolf & Badger, there are quite a few possibilities there (even though it makes my generous budget feel a lot less generous!) Just starting to hunt through but I like this:

I think you should try the Fold and Dai. Both have elevated workwear option!

LadyBundleBrent · 04/05/2022 13:27

Theory is also gorgeous - I don't have any trousers but generally I find true to size, if not slightly generous in tops. I have two beautiful silk shell tops from there.

Might be worth checking out the Outnet as well for silk shirts/tops?

Dai might be just what I'm looking for! Thanks for that - I've never heard of them before but 'performance comfort' is exactly what I'm looking for! A bit of a gulp re price but the colours and tailoring look good in the photos. Have you ordered from them? What is the sizing and fabric quality like?

Try Raey at Matches Fashion. Everything is casually authoritative and grown up. Maybe slightly more than you were planning to spend, but the clothes are lovely.

More generally, you may want to familiarise yourself with moukimou.com MoukiMou. Another source of gloriously louche clothes that will do exactly what you want. Really good for discovering new brands.

whatnottowear · 04/05/2022 13:33

Argh the dai blazers are sold out in the colours that I like. The search is still on!

OP posts:
LadyBundleBrent · 04/05/2022 13:33

@whatnottowear I haven't I'm afraid - I can't justify the spend when I'm stuck at home working. I would definitely give them a try if I were back in the office. Would love to know how you get on - I feel like their clothes are so classic they won't date and would be worth the outlay...enabling

If you do order, I'd love to know how you get on!

whatnottowear · 04/05/2022 13:35

I like the trousers but think they are too casual for what I need. I don't have enough style to pull them off, I need tailoring and structure to look smart!

OP posts:
LadyBundleBrent · 04/05/2022 13:42

🤔how annoying. I'd suggest taking a look at Theory and Paul Smith on the outnet? See if anything jumps out. I think there is a code for an extra 15% off.

Looking forward to exploring some of the ideas on this thread!

whatnottowear · 04/05/2022 13:47

I'm going to get back to work for a bit, many thanks for all the suggestions so far - lots of beautiful clothes and shops I didn't know existed. Will have a proper hunt through some of these sites tonight and update if I order anything. More suggestions still welcome!

The Fold Bellville top sounds exactly what you are looking for on your top half. I have it in lipstick pink and it is so authoritative but not stuffy

That is very similar to one I ordered from Libby - www.libbylondon.com/collections/tops-and-shirts/products/harrington-rosehip-jersey-top

I love the shape and agree it is exactly what I'm looking for. Or thought I was looking for, but Libby's was in a shiny jersey/polyester, the fabric didn't feel nice, was cut very low on the front and just didn't work for me at all. I see The Fold's is in crepe and the cut is much higher so that looks like a much better option. And if I went for that I wouldn't need a blazer so could simplify the shopping overall - it could work with the Hobbs wool trousers that were linked above.

It really is lovely fabric, and the neckline is interesting but covered up. I'd put it on and show you how it looks, but its packed in my suitcase to fly out to a conference tomorrow along with several other The Fold pieces (mainly bought on ebay tbh)
