Help for work event

Help! I need an outfit for a work event and I have been trying to buy things for weeks and nothing is right. It’s an event where I will be the centre of attention, there will be photos and video. I need an outfit that is professional and authoritative but not corporate (no power suits).

I know exactly what I want – a pair of tailored 7/8 trousers and a structured elbow length or long-sleeved top with a blazer. But I can’t seem to get the right thing - I keep buying items that are either too corporate or too casual and nothing works together. I’m size 12 (maybe 10 for tops) and quite pear-shaped.

What I want

  • Structured, tailored, easy to wear and flattering. Elegant and authoritative but ideally also at least a bit stylish.
  • The brands that I think would work – but where I can’t find anything in my size/in stock/suitable – are MaxMara, Sezane, Cos etc. I liked the look of the Sezane Christie blazer but it was out of stock in my size. I’ve ordered a couple of outfits from Libby London that have been disastrous – horrible fabrics and ill-fitting on tops and bottom so won’t try them again.
  • The trousers are probably my biggest problem. I need exact recommendations as I’ve been searching for ages – I’ve tried Boden Richmonds which are often recommended but they are really unflattering on me – saggy at the knees and the cotton fabric feels too casual. I want something really smart/sharply tailored - probably a wool blend. I have been considering Theory and Joseph but their trousers look quite slim fit around the hips so probably won’t work for me. If anyone can advise on their fit that would be great.
  • Colourwise - I never wear black, so navy trousers are ideal. Bright colours are fine - any blues/greens are usually good for my colouring but I'm willing to consider anything!

What I’ve got

  • Decent shoe options (brogues, oxblood loafers or Cheaney’s Chelsea boots – though these are probably too casual).
  • A couple of possible trousers options that I like and are flattering (Cos wool culottes and Hobbs cropped wide leg trousers) but are probably too casual. I can’t get the shapes to work with tops/blazers that I have as they both need a more tailored / cropped top to balance out the wide bottom.
  • A Wyse cord blazer that might work over a structured top and more tailored trousers to bring down the overall smartness level, but is too casual with my existing options.
I’m happy to throw money at this – obviously I'll be delighted if I don’t have to but for the purposes of the question you can assume the individual limit on any item is high (£200+) as I might opt for e.g. expensive blazer or smart top if it will work with the trousers that I have.

Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this wall of text. I’ve been trying to find something suitable for weeks! I’d be so grateful for any help or suggestions of specific trousers/ blazers/ tops that would work together.

Great thread, love the Fold top but its a bit pricier than I'd like. Does it wash / wear well?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/05/2022 15:13

These are tracksuit bottoms. Totally unsuitable

CMOTDibbler · 04/05/2022 15:20

@Baggyeye yes, my top hasn't had a massive amount of wear as I bought it during COVID so I put it on for really big video calls then back in the cupboard, but all the stuff I have bought second hand still looks immaculate as well. Its a lovely heavy crepe and is really wash, dry and wear

Agreed. Totally wrong.

Ok, I've taken the plunge and ordered a couple of pairs of trousers and hope that one of them will fit.

I'm trying these ones from Dai, because they have lured me in with the idea of tailoring that feels like sportswear, even though I have my doubts about whether an elasticated waist can really look good daiwear.com/products/liberty-trouser-midnight?variant=40225520779418

And I've also ordered these Theory ones on Brandalley www.brandalley.co.uk/17599865.html in the hope that they work as much cheaper than Dai.

And I am working up to ordering the fold belleville top but need a bit more price desensitisation as this is turning into an expensive day!

Sorry but I think those Dai trousers are awful. It's maybe the way they are styled on that model but they scream "comfy" not "knock 'em out" stylish.

The Theory ones are better but they'll need something striking on top to make them even noticeable, far less what you are aiming for.

I think the Fold Belleville top is what you're looking for

John Lewis has paired it with trousers which are only £45 and look good with it.

The little notch on the back of the John Lewis trousers makes a huge difference.

You are probably right @KimikosNightmare This has been my problem all along, I keep ordering the kind of stuff that I normally wear and like (but more expensive versions!) and then realise it's all wrong after it arrives.

From what you've described of the event I can 100% see the John Lewis lady there, on stage with a power point/ introducing speakers. Her shoes are right too. Smart but with a low heel (I never wear heels when presenting anything standing up in case I fall over !)

I read research that stated people (both men and women) took women in flat shoes more seriously EVEN if they were sitting down and, presumably, couldn't see their shoes.

I am slightly annoyed by this as have always worn heels for a sense of authority but hey ho

I'm not a fan and whether or not she is taken seriously (or deserves to be taken seriously) I'll leave you to decide, but Nicola Sturgeon is almost always seen in killer heels. And to be fair to Sturgeon (said through gritted teeth) she always looks comfortable in them.

(She's also mastered the art of standing at a lectern in them without falling over)

An update. The Dai trousers and Theory trousers arrived - both going straight back, sadly. The Dai 'performance fabric' is quite thick and rubbery, almost scuba-style. The fit is generous/large and they didn't suit me at all. Returns by DHL and the driver hasn't turned up for the booking so just hoping there isn't going to be a hassle getting them refunded.

The Theory trousers were a much nicer fabric and cut and would be great for someone with slimmer hips than mine but didn't work for my shape. I'll just have to try and find time to go into shops and try things on at the weekend.

Have ordered a Fold Belleville top after much indecision but not too hopeful about it either as I have a long back and worried it will not give enough coverage. Can't believe how difficult I am finding this! (I do have flat shoes though - that bit is ok!)

Yes, even from the website the Dai trousers have a rubbery look to them.

You can drop off parcels at DHL service points if your parcel included a DHL returns label. I've done that and it's been fine.
