Does anyone else think natural hair colour is the best?

I was sat in a hospital waiting room this morning for hours. Did a lot of people watching. I'm thinking of getting balayage on my light brown hair so was looking at what other women had done.

There was a lot of box dyes, either a redish colour or unnaturally black and lots of women with my colour hair plus highlights/balayage. I dont think any of them looked better. The women who's hair looked best were the ones with natural, shiny hair and a good cut. I didn't see anyone who looked improved with dye. I'm thinking I'll save my money and stick with my natural colour.

To 90'sBritPop same with me am Irish and years ago in London was asked was I chinese as my hair very dark and straight and used to be so shiny before peri menopause. Also am very pale skin but black is my natural colour so I would look weird going blonde.

I’m the same, I’ve tried blonde but it washes me out, I need the contrast.

I just find it rude how dismissive and questioning people are over my hair. Even though people also tell me it’s beautiful, I have too many random people who think they can comment. Honestly I was just out having lunch with DH and this woman comes over and starts asking if my hair is real because it’s ‘soooooo dark’ 🙄🙄🙄

People need to realise that white people can have almost black hair ffs, the ‘black Irish’ is a well known gene type!

90sBritPop · 04/05/2022 19:46

…and it’s not ‘obviously fake’ thanks 🙄😛

Oblomov22 · 04/05/2022 19:54

Depends if you've got shiny hair. Some womens hair looks amazing. All they do it have an occasional trim and a brush. The rest of us are left with bleugh coloured mousey hair with split ends. Wink

Does anyone else think natural hair colour is the best?

TabithaTittlemouse oh calm down, I can confirm that no sick person was harmed by my 'judgements'. I was waiting a long time, worried about a family member who had gone in for treatment but I couldn't go in with them, had nothing to read, no WiFi and found myself looking at people's hair in an attempt to calm my anxiety and make the time go quicker. If that makes me a bad person then shame on me but seriously, it was a harmless musing and I wondered what other people thought before I went and spent £££ on potentially unnecessarily hair colour.

90sBritPop the black hair was obviously fake because they had regrowth and you can tell the difference between naturally black hair and a box dye. Obviously white people can have black hair-my mum and brother do!

Thanks for all the other replies. The general consensus is that we'll done colour can certainly make you feel and look better. Maybe I'll just go for it and see if I feel any different for it.

Definitely a lot to be said for your natural colour- it will suit you, you need to worry less about condition, and it will have the natural tones that colourists aim to replicate but don't always succeed. On the other hand, it may be that the women whose hair you liked actually had very well dyed hair, so that it looked natural.

One thing to bear in mind is that if you ever ask a hairdresser for advice, they will always give you advice on what colour to have. They will pretty much never advise you to stick with your natural colour because obviously you don't need them for that!

I had just this conversation with a hairdresser last week. She persuaded me not to get my hair dyed as my natural colour is really trendy apparently. Mousy with greys is now called ash blonde you know! 😆

KimikosNightmare · 04/05/2022 21:14

ParisNoir · 03/05/2022 18:14

Yep- this too. I know a few people whose hair is a gorgeous colour, matches their brows, and is 100% not natural. I would never have guessed in a million years it wasnt natural.

Mine for example.

Notbluepeter · 04/05/2022 21:30

I agree. I see hair dye like fake nails. Both look great until the regrowth comes through, at which point they look dreadful. The regrowth undoes the whole point of those first few weeks of glamour.

ZenNudist · 04/05/2022 21:43

Sadly greying mousy hair shoved in a pony tail is not a great look. Box dye can be OK. I like a reddish box dye on others. I get a mix of highlights and low lights in my dark blonde hair and it just looks good. Dsis is natural and a bit darker than me and she looks good too.

Fine for you OP if you aren't going grey and you have a good natural colour. A well done baylayage or highlights looks fab.

intwrferingma · 04/05/2022 22:27

Well done colour adds shine to hair. I'm (just) post menopausal. No discernible grey. But my chestnut brown hair has lost shine. So I get a glossy subtle balayage from a hairdresser who knows her stuff. It's basically the same colour as my natural hair. It looks so much healthier.

Sweepingeyelashes · 05/05/2022 00:01

You shouldn't be able to tell a good dye job especially if somebody is keeping up with the roots. People really think that my hair colour is naturally blonde - pale skin and blue eyes. They say they can't even imagine me with my original near black hair. I got the early greyness gene so I started greying as a teenager. I'd have stuck with my natural hair (if it had stuck with me) as it was a striking combination. Probably the only change I'd have made otherwise was if I was mousey and I think some subtle blonde hightlights can be very pretty in that type of hair.

superplumb · 05/05/2022 06:56

I have dirty blonde hair and get highlights consisting of 3 colours. No way is my natural colour better, its awful

WelshTiger · 05/05/2022 07:01

Looking back at photos of me with bleach blonde hair, it just looks like so much work, and without make up I looked really washed out. Plus all the conditioning treatments and stuff. It was usually in shite condition.

I think generally natural hair, or close to the natural colour looks best.

Corty02 · 05/05/2022 07:22

Natural haircolor is a gift, which is not appreciated...

BOOTS52 · 05/05/2022 07:37

To the op you should try the Naturtint hair colours as they have not got the same chemicals in them and leaves the hair lovely and shiny. I take a box of it which I get in health shop and hairdresser uses it for my greys. Makes me feel and look better but my hair grows so fast that in a few weeks needs to be done again so I buy that spray in root colour to give me a few more weeks as cannot afford to keep going. Used to do my own dye years ago but too much hassle now. Wish could go blonde as greys blend in more with regrowth but would be soo much of a drastic change for me that I would think I would just look so strange and like my dark hair even though get bored of it at times.

CatHerderGeneral · 05/05/2022 10:20

No, your natural hair colour definitely doesn't always look better.

I'm Latin American, and my natural hair colour is an awful weird sort of ashy, grey-ish brown with green undertones, hard to describe, but it looks like a bad dye stripping job. It's always been that colour, and so I dye it "proper" dark browny black. Looks 1000x better and I doubt you'd know as I never let roots develop. Now it just looks natural.

dontgobaconmyheart · 05/05/2022 17:26

I don't think there is one rule for this, and it's certainly subjective.

I've never dyed my hair (am mid thirties). I'm fine with the colour, it suits me and I think that's kept it in a really nice condition. I always assume it's nothing special; a light ashy brown with various tones going through it in daylight but it does get the occasional compliment.

I often look at all the instagram balayage photos and wonder if I should do it but never do. It looks gorgeous freshly done but I don't think grown out colour ever looks great. I wouldn't box dye my hair so when I go grey if I decide to fight against it I will go to the hairdresser but until then will enjoy it as is (and enjoy the absolute bare minimum effort and cost it creates)

SleepingStandingUp · 05/05/2022 17:28

How could you possibly know if it looked better? Did you ask for a before and after photo? How do you know that those with the nice hair weren't just more subtle dye jobs?

MushMonster · 05/05/2022 17:31

To have a nice result you really need to commit to it when dying. Do it properly and regularly, which costs a lot!
I am keepong my natural colour, whites and all. For the environment too, it is a lot of chemical for just a different colour in my hair...

filo443 · 05/05/2022 17:35

I haven't dyed my hair for a few months (it's 80% white now') my son said "wow your hair is blonde mummy."

My daughter "that's grey, all grey"

Actually it's white, but it's not flattering, so I dye it. too young to be white, or grey😂

filo443 · 05/05/2022 17:38

My daughter has balayage, it's stunning, grows out like natural summer highlights. If it's done well, it's really good. (but expensive)

Hubblebubble · 05/05/2022 17:44

This is a scary thread to read the day before my first professional dye

Hubblebubble · 05/05/2022 17:45

But my hair has faded to a shade that can best be described as tired rust, so it must be done

roadsweep · 05/05/2022 18:13

Nope I dye my hair bright ginger and it gets compliments daily

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/05/2022 18:16

Yeah but what’s the fun in that?

SommerTen · 05/05/2022 18:39

My natural colour is dark mouse with a bit of frizzy white... trust me it looks much prettier tinted & highlighted!!
It will never be ultra shiny as it's fine & curly...
