Tall women, help! Should I just not use swimming pools?

Mybobowler · 30/04/2022 18:40

I'm 5'10". Tall, yes, but not remarkably so. All I want is to take my daughter swimming on a Sunday morning but can I find an affordable, long length swimsuit? Can I heck. I last bought one in a Boden sale, but I can't afford to shop there anymore.

I'd buy a tankini but all the shops my budget usually forces me to (supermarkets, Primark, Matalan etc) have stopped doing them. Asos Tall swimsuits are all for lounging on a beach, not dodging plasters and snot in the local leisure centre.

I've realised I'm probably going to have to spend about fifty quid (an eye-watering amount to for me) and I want to get this right. So can anyone recommend me a swimsuit (either a long-length one-piece or a tankini) that is:

Simple (ideally a dark, single colour)
Good quality
Reasonably priced

For background I'm in my early thirties, slim and not blessed with boobs. I'm also five months postpartum and feeling really horrible about my body, so I want something that'll cover everything.

Any help?!

ASOS tall range

SophieSoSo · 01/05/2022 11:22

I’m 5’11 and never had a problem with standard ASOS costumes and also Next?

ASOS tell you the height of the models (im sure you know this!) and I just avoid the models that are like 5’6. They’ve always been fine.

lljkk · 01/05/2022 11:51

Similar dimensions to OP, i bought tankini top from charity shop & plain black jammer shorts from Wiggle - maybe £20 total ?

Aichek · 01/05/2022 11:55

None of the Asos Tall suits look like you could actually swim in them, bar one. Lots of them do that ridiculous high crotch thing.

I think it depends how much length is in your body vs legs as to whether you can manage with normal suits. I also wear my Deakin and Blue bikini a lot, but they are ££££ (I live somewhere hot so spend most of the summer in swimwear).

Moonface123 · 01/05/2022 12:32

l am tall but recently ordered two swimsuits , which look more like a short dress, very flattering from Amazon, my usual size and they fit really well. l think they are called swim dress but they also do swim shorts , all different lenghts and seperate tops, and they look good at reasonable price.

nearlyspringyay · 01/05/2022 12:46

Tu are surprisingly long in body. I don't want my flaps out for anyone. I'm 5 9

Mybobowler · 01/05/2022 18:56

Thanks again for all the great tips everyone. I returned to the Next website earlier and, miraculously, loads of their Tall swimsuits were back in stock. I've got one arriving on Tuesday - fingers crossed it fits, with no wedgies in sight.

I was relaying this predicament to a friend and ended up ranting about the nightmare of buying clothes when you're over 5'8". Don't even get me started on the shrinking length of sleeves 😒

I’m 5ft11 and I have a few from River Island

maeveiscurious · 01/05/2022 22:41

White stuff had swimming costumes in store on Friday for £5 including tankini

dgirluk · 02/05/2022 09:03

I'm 5'9 so not quite as tall, but Speedo swimsuits have always been fine.

Sleepingb · 15/05/2022 19:39

My Next one from the tall range is fine.

Isaidno22 · 16/05/2022 10:12

I’ve found Long Tall Sally are very poor quality. Mine has bobbled from just sitting on a towel on a sun lounger for a few days. The FB group Tallternative Retail has some great suggestions and you can use the search function to look for swim items.

Seasalt often have discount codes.

genericusername789 · 19/05/2022 19:52

@Mybobowler hey, can I ask how you got on with the next ones?

@Isaidno22 shame about the LTS ones as that was my next stop!

Shananananala · 19/05/2022 21:12

I have a long body too, size 10, 5’10, small boobs, and don’t like wearing bikinis since I had my child. It’s such a pain to find stuff! I also don’t like high leg. A lot of trial and error with trying on but I have had success in recent years with Monki - (in general their clothes fit me well), and last year I got lucky with 1 from Sainsburies and 1 from Zara. Hope that helps!

Shananananala · 19/05/2022 21:15

Lol I’m actually 5’6 not 5’10 so my body is obvs crazy long as it’s always a struggle to find one that fits!

Sympathies @Shananananala - I’m exactly the same - always looking up at my taller friends when we are standing, and looking down at them when we are sitting!

Some advantages though: no problem with lack of leg space on flights and a clear view over the heads of others in the theatre.

(I’d rather have long legs though).

VioletHills · 20/05/2022 05:34

I'm 5ft10 too and have always just bought normal swimming costumes and I'm covered lol.

Agreed!!! I swim a couple of times a week. Tu (Sainsbury’s) do some great swimable swimsuits which seem to have long bodies by default, for < £15.

HandScreen · 20/05/2022 06:23

You'll find something cheaply on Amazon, either a long-length suit or a tankini.

Crabbyboot · 20/05/2022 06:39

I really feel for you, I'm only five foot five and I have this problem as I have a long torso it must be very difficult being tall! The length of some swimsuits are ridiculous.

clumperoo · 20/05/2022 06:45

A plain black tankini in m&s is £27

Similarly priced on Next. Get the bottoms in Primark

maeveiscurious · 20/05/2022 07:11

Long tall Sally if you are long in the body

FinallyHere · 20/05/2022 07:49

My 6' friend buys her swimsuits in https://www.landsend.co.uk/Women/Swimwear/ix-11307?cmre=ukwmnbbl17-8%20%20%20%20%20%20%20/img_txt

They always get good reviews here on MN

Anyfeckinusername · 20/05/2022 08:01

How did you get on @Mybobowler with the online purchases? Curious as I’m trying to find a swimsuit too… I’m waiting on one from boden on back order which cost way too much … not hopeful.

AndSoFinally · 20/05/2022 10:24

SeaFancy do some long torso friendly ones eg seafancy.co.uk/product/deep-green-floral-print-strap-one-piece-swimsuit-1
