What do you think about this Boden dress?

For reference, I'm 35 with a toddler and a small baby.

This would be my first Boden dress and they are not cheap.

My husband said it looks beautiful and classy, but I'm worried that it just looks great on the model. This would be my first Boden dress and they are not cheap.

Here is a linen dress from Karen Millen for £65

Here is an ivory dress also from Karen Millen for £79.20

A satin cowl midi dress from Coast for £103.20

I think the dress from Boden would be even nicer if it wasn't made out of such a heavy cotton fabric.

TottersBlankly · 01/05/2022 09:35

I think it's nice but you'd need a darker skin tone and hair like the model to pull it off

Why the assumption that the OP is not in possession of said darker skin tone? She has said that light colours suit her.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/05/2022 09:39

It would look frumpy on me and I’m a decade older. I can’t imagine where it could be worn as the colour isn’t very practical.

The three dresses you’ve linked are:

Viscose

Polyester

Viscose

When the OP specifically said she wanted cotton, with no polyester!

I must say I’d find the original dress somewhat suffocating and exposing - absolutely hate tight tops. And I’m very certain that I wouldn’t have been shopping at Boden in my 30s (or now) - except perhaps for children’s clothes.

AtomicBlondeRose · 01/05/2022 09:55

That Karen Millen first dress looks super cheap for how much it costs. It’s a nice shape but look at how the hem hangs even on the model. You can see through the fabric and there’s no drape to it at all.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/05/2022 09:59

I would never buy a dress in that colour-and I don’t have toddlers-it will show every mark! The blue is nice though.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 01/05/2022 10:03

It reminds me of French styling. Simple, classy and not overly fussy. The only thing I would say is that I think it would probably only look good on someone who is quite tall and fairly slim. I don’t think the style would be very forgiving and also the colour might not be toddler proof.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 01/05/2022 10:06

I love it!
Order and give it a try. Sending things back is very easy

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/05/2022 10:07

It is just a cream denim dress, loads of other places sell similar and it can be a bit bulky in reality. I appreciate the cut isn’t as good but I picked up this white one for £3 a few weeks ago and it’s 100% cotton (as is most denim) www.nastygal.com/gb/organic-cotton-denim-maxi-dress/AGG07864.html

S5Y9 works. I used it yesterday.

that was for @thenightsky (the quote didn’t work)

Echobelly · 01/05/2022 10:12

It's potentially a lovely dress but depends on your shape. I'm short with small boobs and a big stomach so I'd look like a sack of spuds in it 😜 , but if you have a waist it'd look lovely!

dontgobaconmyheart · 01/05/2022 10:32

I think it looks lovely on the model as it's been styled but couldn't see it working in real life for the average body and I certainly think you'd need to have an above average height for anything approaching a best fit, both for the length of it and for the placement of the waist tie, where the bust sits etc. She does look classy and beautiful but I don't know how much of that is down to the dress really, I can imagine it being a bit bulky and uninspiring at other angles and lighting.

Not something I could see working for everyday, in my lifestyle certainly, and not really quite right for formal occasions so I'd question how much wear it would yield or how long it would last in that colour regardless.

If in doubt just order and try on OP. If the cost is off putting then really consider the cost per wear if you kept it.

Thank you! It's worked this time Grin

SquirrelG · 01/05/2022 10:42

I think it is lovely OP. I would have to have the blue - I would have something spilled on the cream one before I even left the house! The only way you will know if it suits you will be to order it and try it on. I don't like any of the other suggested dresses, and I agree it is good to find a natural fabric dress.

Hornets · 01/05/2022 10:43

I've got this dress! I'm 5 foot 3" and between size 12-14. I ordered the 12 in petite and was surprised to find it is very flattering on me.

However, I hate the fabric as it's too heavy. I thought it would be lighter, like calico material but it's more like a cream denim, so sadly it's going back.

But if you fancy trying it out, just order it, try it on and send it back if it doesn't suit. I order loads of stuff, different sizes etc. to see what works and send back anything that doesn't.

Ladyoftheprom · 01/05/2022 10:45

I love it!

DomesticatedZombie · 01/05/2022 11:09

It's lovely, but it wouldn't work for me for reasons of colour and boobage. My advice is to look for these dresses on ebay, you can often find them a few months later much cheaper.

trilbydoll · 01/05/2022 11:13

I don't even look at full price Boden. You've got nothing to lose ordering it to try on. I find some of the dresses bear no resemblance to the picture and some are brilliant, it's completely random.

HoraThird · 01/05/2022 11:23

Beautiful dress, lovely and plain and simple.

I think it would look great in a tall, slim person.

Would look awful on me cos I have v broad shoulders!

Whitney168 · 04/05/2022 08:21

Don't know if anyone else ordered this off the back of this thread, but mine arrived yesterday and I've just tried it on - I am not slim(!), pear shaped, 5'9" and I LOVE it. (Denim version here, if I didn't know the ecru would be a dreadful colour on me, I'd order that too.)

DSGR · 05/05/2022 12:50

Thanks! I’ll give it a try too, I like the simplicity of it

StarlightLady · 05/05/2022 13:05

I'm afraid it wouldn't be for me. I never think a high round necking sleeveless work together. If it had a v necklace, I'd snap it up.

AnnieSnap · 05/05/2022 17:52

I think it’s beautiful. As others have said though, never buy from Boden with a good discount because they are available so often. I see a 20% off coupon has already be posted for you. Treat yourself 🙂

TiredMummyZZZ · 09/05/2022 07:29

I bought this dress from the back of this thread and it’s… alright.

I’m 5 foot 4 and a size 12, I bought the 12 and I feel like I could have sized down as it was extremely baggy. It was comfy and wiped clean when some strawberry daiquiri fell on it but it was rather frumpy and definitely felt like a ‘mum outfit’.

Not entirely sure I’d recommend it, maybe it just looks better on someone with longer legs!
