Are knee-length skirts and dresses due a comeback?

Those of you who understand fashion: is there any hope they will come back soon?

Alternatively, does anyone know a shop that still sells some?

Hope not, I like the longer length!

MiniTheMinx · 24/04/2022 17:40

Hope so. For every day wear I look ridiculous is long dresses. I'm short. I have looked everywhere for old fashioned knee length sun dresses.

Scissors and a sewing machine would solve that problem.

hepaticanobilis · 24/04/2022 19:32

What kind of styles are you looking for, in terms of brand etc.? I haven't had any trouble finding knee length dresses and skirts but some of the brands I like may not be considered stylish enough on here 😂

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/04/2022 19:34

Doubtful. Hemlines drop in a recession. Think we’re due the mother of all recessions soon.

Wnkingawalrus · 24/04/2022 19:39

What sort of clothes are you after? Anywhere that does decent tailoring with have knee length skirts and dresses.

Herbarium · 24/04/2022 19:54

I just wish dresses without lurid, flouro patterns would come back. I dont even care about length any more Grin

I want a plain coloured dress that isn't for a funeral!

Herbarium · 24/04/2022 19:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
Mmm, recession-wear.
I can think of a few children I could employ to hold my trailing gown hems as I walk by like this:

I think we are too. I didn’t know that about hemlines and recession. What other effects does the economy have on fashion I wonder.

PerditaNitt · 24/04/2022 20:16

I agree - very little choice of knee length in most brands. Was recently trying to find a plain black work skirt that wasn’t mid calf or a super tight pencil and found nothing!

the best places for knee length are probably Hobbs for work dresses but their choice is limited. Boden also usually do a good range of knee length. Other than that, I think that the tailor might be the best option!

Apparently lipstick sales increase as it’s a small luxury. Don’t know how accurate that is though.

woodhill · 24/04/2022 20:24

Why do they drop

In WW2 the hemlines shortened due to fabric shortened but dresses were long in the 30s recession

Is it to do with less tailoring on long stuff?

thegreenandtheblue · 24/04/2022 21:02

I'm looking mostly for casual skirts and dresses, preferably high-waisted and A-line. It's the only skirt shape that works with my proportions.

I was looking at Uniqlo and don't know where to turn. Any shop is fine by me, low to mid-priced preferably.

This recession hemline talk is both depressing and fascinating. Anyone know why hemlines drop in recession? Is it anxiety? Do we try to cover ourselves to feel protected?

And thanks for the recommendations, I am noting them all.

simplesooze · 25/04/2022 07:13

Shein

justchecking1 · 25/04/2022 09:36

Good lord, Orchid, that's not knee length!! There's a good 6 inches of thigh on display there 😂😂

MrsPear · 25/04/2022 20:05

@thegreenandtheblue how about vintage inspired clothes shops - the weekend doll, house of foxy and seamstress of Bloomsbury spring to mind. They are not all quirky prints with animals - they have plain and checks too. They are often referred to as swing skirts.

GettingStuffed · 25/04/2022 20:12

Saw loads in mountain warehouse today. Quite nice too but I've got knobbly knees 😃

hepaticanobilis · 25/04/2022 20:45

Depending on your height, the "above the knee" length from Aesthetic Laundry hits on the knee on me (5ft3). Plus they are a lovely small business that makes all their clothes in their London studio so no sweatshops used. aestheticlaundry.com/collections/skirts?sort_by=best-selling#MainContent

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/04/2022 20:52

Boden? Ive had a lot of luck there in previous years.
