Dylon: Have I just ruined my washing machine forever black?!?

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 22/04/2022 13:28

Reassurance please! I’ve got a lovely pair of mid green shorts that are perfect in every way except the colour. I’ve just chucked them in the washing machine with a black Dylan pod, and not only do I have black stains on my hands but the inside of the machine currently looks like the swirling black pit of hell.

Please someone tell me the machine won’t be forever black/turn all my clothes sludge grey forevermore?!

Bleach?

chipsandpeas · 22/04/2022 13:30

it will be fine, do a empty rinse cycle afterwards (or put in stuff you dont mind getting any leftover dye on) and it will clear any leftovers out

Knittedfairies · 22/04/2022 13:31

Run it without clothes on the hottest wash?

fruitbrewhaha · 22/04/2022 13:31

Watching with interest as I have a dylon pod to de a pair of trousers. I'm ging to wait until yours are done OP before I risk it.

OnlyClothes · 22/04/2022 13:32

Well you wash them with dye, then you wash them with powder, then you do an empty wash as per the instructions. Then wipe the rubber seal and you’re good to go!

Nanalisa60 · 22/04/2022 13:32

It will be fine just do a normal wash (black clothes) don’t wash whites or lights in it for a few washes

Ok thanks, I had a moment of horror when I saw the colour of the water and my hands won’t wash off!! 😂 I’ve got a tense couple of hours ahead of me.

I would 100% do the same 😂 I’ll be back to update this evening on the state of my laundry.

As Onlychlothes says, but I also added a colour catcher sheet in the next wash just to make sure it was all gone. No black dye transference at all.

Thank you, this is reassuring. It looks like a black dog on a pitch black night in there currently!

I know you were just panicking, but you put black dye in water and on your hands and …you’re worried because it’s black?

do you think they’dstay profitable if they ruined every washing machine?

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 22/04/2022 13:36

Lots of reassurance, thank you. My anxiety has dropped a notch!

I know, it’s completely daft. I’ve just read so many stories of people disappointed about how crap the dye job was, and then my finger tips were instantly unscrubbable black and my brain went “ARGHHHHHHH YOU’ll NEVER BE ABLE TO WASH WHITES AGAIN” and I panicked 😱😂

Try reading the instructions! They tell you to wear gloves, and they also tell you how to clean the machine afterwards.

I hold my hands up to ignoring the gloves in the instructions and regretting it! 😁 I have and will follow all the other instructions re cycles, just wanted a bit of (lighthearted!) reassurance that nobody had problems with their light washes after using it.

NorthernTights · 22/04/2022 15:23

Don’t worry! I’ve done loads of dark dye washes with the pods and it’s always been fine. Follow the instructions, usually wash with the dye pod, then wash no detergent then wash with detergent. I always put a darks wash in as the next wash after dyeing and it’s been okay.

SockFluffInTheBath · 22/04/2022 15:27

I’m confused by you having drained your hands. When I’ve used them I’ve run a short cycle to wet the clothes, removed the pod lid and popped it into the drum and run a cycle, then added powder and run another cycle, then removed the clothes and all has been well.

SockFluffInTheBath · 22/04/2022 15:27

*stained

PortiaFimbriata · 22/04/2022 15:29

It'll be fine OP. I do it all the time and as long as I follow the instructions it's never damaged my machine. Check round the house now for dark coloured bath mats/dusters/oven gloves or whatever to put in the hot wash you do at the end. In theory it's meant to be done empty but given the current price of electricity you don't want to waste it.

SScoobiedoo · 22/04/2022 15:39

I've used dye and it's fine - just rinses away

I think a few granules popped out when I pulled the lid off the pod and got on my hands; I’m a bit heavy handed 😳

@PortiaFimbriata great tip thank you! I’ve got towels and black leggings that can go through.

What about trying some old bath towels that may wipe away any residue ?
