Dylon: Have I just ruined my washing machine forever black?!?

Reassurance please! I’ve got a lovely pair of mid green shorts that are perfect in every way except the colour. I’ve just chucked them in the washing machine with a black Dylan pod, and not only do I have black stains on my hands but the inside of the machine currently looks like the swirling black pit of hell.

Please someone tell me the machine won’t be forever black/turn all my clothes sludge grey forevermore?!

I've ended up with dye stained fingers loads of times due to using hand dyes without noticing there were holes in my gloves. It's always worn off after a couple of days.

Ive used a Dylon machine wash product afterwards but have always still had to wipe all inside the rubber seal and door glass to get the residue off after dyeing ( spelling? 🤔). Apparently modern washing machines use a lot less water so the empty wash you do afterwards isn’t as effective as it once might have been. In other dyeing news Rit do a range of dyes for synthetics that I’m really keen to try although you have to use a pan on a cooker and not the machine. I love watching people dye their trainers ( because that’s the exciting life I lead)

Just make sure you give the door seals a really good clean afterwards.

Top tip - do a empty hottest wash with detergent BEFORE dyeing.
The less gunk there is before you start, the easier it is to clean up afterwards

Ok so the dye section is done and I’m delighted! The shorts are a lovely velvet black, with green thread trim which looks great. Genuinely impressed by my first home dye attempt!

Have noted advice and wiped down the seals before running the rinse wash with some towels; there was some trapped dye in there which I’ve wiped out. Thanks for the emotional support everyone it was slightly anxiety inducing for a short period there! 😁

Make sure you clean the rim of the seal and the door because little pockets can hide in there. Use some colour catcher sheets for a few loads. You'll be amazed how much the sheets can pick up.
