If you don’t wash you hair every two days

I keep seeing instagram models with gorgeous hair saying they only wash it once a week. How?? I’m the same age, sadly 30s. Mine gets so greasy so quickly. How do people do it?

Is it dry shampoo? But isn’t that also bad for it?

My only thought is why is dry shampoo better than just shampooing it properly? I’ve read so much about how dry shampoo isn’t good for toy hair.

Shampooing/washing mine (and drying it) takes me the best part of an hour for a rush job like last night and double that or more if I'm doing a full number on it. I suspect many of us don't have that sort of time that often.

I've never heard of dry shampoo being bad for hair, but it doesn't do a lot for mine so I tend not to bother with it unless my hair is so grim it won't pass muster for the day at work, say. The IGK one with charcoal is the best of the ones I've tried.

Those of you who don't wash your hair every day, how do you manage exercise? Doesn't your hair get sweaty and frizzy after workouts?

I've heard something about dry shampoo damaging to hair follicles, but I've never used it and don't know if there's any truth in that.

@BiscuitLover3678 try Johnsons baby shampoo. Made a world of difference to mine, went from washing every other day to once a week - twice at most due to the gym.

ArabeI · 21/04/2022 16:35

@lameasahorse

Washing my hair takes 2 minutes in the shower and about 3 - 5 minutes to dry. I usually just leave it to dry naturally unless I am going out and making it nice. In which case it takes about 15 minutes to dry naturally.
Mine takes hours to dry. Not thick hair, particularly, just long-ish. A blow dry (rarely do this) takes 20-30 minutes - drying in sections rather than a rough dry.
BiscuitLover3678 · 21/04/2022 17:50

I’ve also realised that I blow dry my hair which isn’t good

For me, switching shampoo made the whole difference.

i now only use shampoo bars and wash my hair about twice a week. It still looks better than when I was washing it every other day with normal shampoo.
It took a bit of time for things to settle down but I stretched the washes slowly.

i also don’t use conditioner. My hair doesn’t seem to need it. But then, I don’t colour it, no highlights and I don’t use a hair dryer. When I was doing any of those, I needed it!

I asked the same question earlier, I exercise 4-5 times a week and sweat like a bear. No way could I not wash my hair.

After reading this thread I've decided I'm happy as I am, washing my hair every day. It's in good condition; I love the feeling of it being clean, and it looks so much better when washed.

you need to train your hair to need washing less. Work up, one day at a time, adding an extra day between washes every couple of weeks. Use dry shampoo in between to freshen up if you can't bear it. Change shampoo frequently (cycle through several different ones so you never use the same one twice in a row). Helps the hair to adapt! I have fine, greasy hair and it does get oily quickly if I wash too often but the dry shampoo helps to stretch it out between washes and I find I can train it to be a bit better and last longer if I stretch out.

Completely agree. I have fine hair and only wash it (with shampoo) once every 10-14 days. It just doesn't need any more than that. As a younger woman I washed it more frequently, and at one point found I needed to wash it almost every day! I realised that I was stripping the oils from it with the shampoo, so making the hair follicles work overtime to replace the lost oils. I started to gradually extend the period between washes and haven't washed more that once a week for the last 25 years now.

Softly softly approach works best.

Absolute baloney.

your hormones do not know how often you are washing your hair.

But isn’t using dry shampoo defeating the whole point of waiting 7 days?

My hair is quite straight and probably quite fine. It’s always oily at the front and I don’t know how to disguise it. If I could learn a tip to make it look less horrendous at the top then the rest of it looks fine!

Tie hair back loosely. Lean over bathroom sink. Wet top/front of head, ie worst greasy area, and rub in a tiny amount of shampoo, rinse, gently towel dry top. Release hair. Air dry. Done!

Angrymum22 · 25/04/2022 01:16

I had to stop washing my hair every other day because of sensitivity to sls in shampoo.
I wash it once or twice a week now.
The more you strip your scalp of natural oils (sebum) the more you produce. So by gradually cutting down the number of washes the less you produce. Also natural scalp oil is a fantastic conditioner. I sometimes go a week or so when I don’t need to to allow it to get really greasy.
My hairdresser always comments on how good the condition is and assumes it’s the expensive shampoo he sells me.
I do use the expensive stuff (Davines) They do refills, the packaging is environmentally friendly and the product is fantastic.

Angrymum22 · 25/04/2022 01:24

I did the same with my skin. I stopped using soap or cleansers. Allowed it to find its own natural balance. I no longer waste a shed load of money on fancy moisturisers and cleansing products. I just use water or micella water to clean makeup off.
I do use soap on my face about once a week and then use a moisturiser. At the moment I’m using MooGoo udder cream restore. I bought it to use after radiotherapy (breast cancer) it was so fantastic on my boob I decided to give it a go on my face.

dipdye · 25/04/2022 01:30

You can't train your hair. I've tried

WaveParticleDuality · 25/04/2022 03:13

It's taken me nearly 40 years to realise how to care for wavy and textured hair.

And it's bugger-all to do with training.

WaveParticleDuality · 25/04/2022 03:14

@dipdye you CAN train your hair.

I have!

muppamup · 25/04/2022 09:43

I've trained mine too! I disagree with others who say it can't be done. It takes time and commitment and not always easy at the start but it can be done.

ArabeI · 25/04/2022 09:59

Interesting about the hair training. I've only seen this in the long hair groups I'm in, and in a minority, and the aficionados say it can take years. I think the motive there is the hassle of washing, and drying, long hair.

Some people go beyond two weeks, and I've heard of those who've done a year (experimental?) but I think a lot of people who don't 'shampoo' are doing things like rinsing with plain, or infused, water, co washing (washing with conditioner) or home made dry shampoo.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/04/2022 13:15

I think some people can train their hair but for others (like me) our hair is just so fine and thin that the smallest amount of grease or product build up makes its completely lank and awful. I did try several times in my life, the most recent lockdown 2020, it just doesn't work for me.

BiscuitLover3678 · 24/04/2022 19:37

Surely depends hugely what the point of waiting 7 days is!

For me, it's because drying and styling very thick curly hair is time-consuming, a hassle, and difficult, and I try to avoid it as long as I possibly can. If something like dry-shampoo helped, I'd use it! (I've not tried it. I mostly just try to avoid washing my hair, and as much as possible, avoid getting it at all wet - which is not easy).

Chishnfips · 25/04/2022 14:23

My hair gets too greasy if I sleep on it more than 3 nights in a row without washing and by the 4th day I am most certainly putting it up to stop it looking any worse. Dry shampoo makes my head itch like crazy so I won't use it anymore. It's only because my hair is now longer that I can leave it that longer without washes to tie it up. When it was much shorter I'd have to wash almost every day no matter what.

Fidgety31 · 25/04/2022 14:53

I have fine curly hair . I have to wash it everyday as my skin /scalp is oily and I also exercise every day - so I like to feel clean .
I hate it when you can smell someone’s greasy hair - makes me want to vomit .
