If you don’t wash you hair every two days

I keep seeing instagram models with gorgeous hair saying they only wash it once a week. How?? I’m the same age, sadly 30s. Mine gets so greasy so quickly. How do people do it?

Is it dry shampoo? But isn’t that also bad for it?

I have fine hair but a lot of it and after third day the grease just goes away. What a delight

Forestdweller11 · 18/04/2022 21:44

Another one here who stretched hair washing over lockdown. I used to have to wash it every day, and sometimes twice... Now I can go 4-5 days and it's gone from poker straight to having a slight wave ...

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 18/04/2022 21:51

I have very long thick poker straight hair. The strands themselves are very fine. I was my hair every Thursday. I start using dry shampoo on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

I've always washed my hair just once a week. I think a lot of it comes down to how your hair and scalp are used to being washed. I suspect you could probably train your hair and scalp to get used to less washing over a period of time.

schnubbins · 18/04/2022 21:58

I need to wash my shoulder length thick wavy hair every day because I just don't wake up or feel so fresh if I just shower without washing my hair .I do try some days and always regret it .My hair is still very healthy .

Tuters · 18/04/2022 22:03

You don't 'train' hair you train yourself.
For the last 35 years I've washed mine only ever 10 - 14 days.
BUT I don't touch my scalp at all. I don't rub my scalp when cleaning. The more you touch, rub, massage the more you stimulate the sebaceous gland, the more you stimulate the more oil is produced.
I have fine but loads of hair, its coloured but I only ever use 1 form of heat.

ShowOfHands · 18/04/2022 22:04

I've never had even a hint of grease and my hair looks exactly the same after being washed as it does 6 days later. I don't even really need to brush it.

TheOGCCL · 18/04/2022 22:09

Definitely depends on hair and skin type. I would never be able to get my hair used to not washing it at least every other day. Not only does it feel horrible, just unclean, it visibly darkens (with grease) and then my follicles get clogged and dandruff ensues. And if not pulled back, starts to cause face spots. I’m 46, age has made no difference.

Been using this shampoo which is making a small difference.

A tip I picked up from a hairdresser was spraying dry shampoo onto hair after washing when hair is only about 50% dry. It really seems to prolong the cleanliness of my hair, without the usual tacky/dried out feeling I get from placing dry shampoo directly onto dry hair.
Also, sometimes people say not 'washing' hair to mean not shampooing it - I know a few people who do a regular rinse and condition but don't shampoo. That seems to remove the worst of the oils and dirt, and gives a bit of life to hair, without the drying aspect of frequent shampooing.

elidelochanthefirst · 18/04/2022 22:25

Honestly my hair doesn't get greasy really. I just wash it when it stops smelling of shampoo. When I've been ill and it's been over a week it still wasn't greasy.

I think hair texture plays a big role. I'll never have glossy "Rachel from Friends" hair - mine is like very long beachy waves - it's not super shiny and sleek. I have to add lots of oil to it.

I think you can "train" your hair a bit

JelloFishy · 18/04/2022 22:27

I have thick wavy hair. Have to wash the mop on day 2 or dry shampoo for an extra day. Have tried everything to prolong it. I must be a greasy person Easter Blush

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/04/2022 22:32

My hair is thick, curly, chin length. I’ve never washed it everyday, it’s best washed about fortnightly. It’s awful for 3 days or so after it’s washed.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/04/2022 22:32

I generally do mine once a week (and it takes forever as I do Olaplex 0 & 3 before shampooing it) but very occasionally I'll give it a quick midweek wash if it's been mauled about or got very hot. Mine is also long, thick and wavy and it takes a good ten days to start feeling greasy at the roots provided I keep my hands off it and don't faff.

Sickoffamilydrama · 18/04/2022 22:33

I go about 5-7 days probably could do longer bit it gets itchy. My hair is curly though and isin much better condition since I stopped waiting it daily.
I also don't brush it just run my fingers through it to detangle.

AliceW89 · 18/04/2022 22:35

I have fine, long straight hair that tends towards greasy as opposed to dry and wash it 1-2 times per week tops. Build up to it slowly, stretching a day at a time. Invest in great products that don’t build up. It’s pricey, but the Olaplex range has been a game changer for me. My hair has been in much better shape washing it less - it was a greasy, broken mess when I use to do it daily!

Lady1576 · 18/04/2022 22:41

If you gradually wash it less often, it’ll need it less often. If you have greasy hair maybe you won’t be able to stretch it to a week but certainly you can stretch the gap…. And yes fry shampoo…. Or being pregnant.

SilverOtter · 18/04/2022 22:47

I used to wash my long, very thick hair every 2-3 days, but now I usually wash it weekly (occasionally goes to a week and a half).

I can honestly say it never feels itchy or greasy like it used to. I don't know whether my scalp has become less oily as I've got older, or if it's down to changing my routine 🤷🏻‍♀️

The night before wash day I massage castor oil into my scalp and leave it overnight, then wash my hair the following day.

BotCrossHuns · 18/04/2022 22:56

Mine only needs it about once a week really, or less. But it doesn't look as nice as when I've washed and tried to style it, so that's what makes me do it eventually rather than it actually being very greasy or anything.

But I find it hard to have a shower or bath without getting it a bit wet or at least steamy. I can sort of do a bath, or a sink wash. But showers are harder. I have a good shower cap but it still ends up frizzy. Or if I try to stand carefully to wash myself but keep my hair out of it, it still gets frizzed with the steam. So I end up doing a sink wash more than I probably should, because I hate them having to wash my hair properly and dry it etc, but it looks awful frizzy too. How does everyone else manage not washing their hair but still showering

Puppalicious · 18/04/2022 23:42

@onepieceoflollipop my god that just goes to show how different peoples hair is. I can’t imagine being able to dry my hair in 2 minutes! I have a lot of hair, medium texture but lots of it, with a loose curl/wave. Would take me 30 mins or more to dry i think. Recently bought a hot air brush which has been amazing - I wash it around 6 or 7pm and then take the hot air brush to it 3 hours later, when it’s still damp, and can get it looking sleek in 10 minutes. But before that It just took too long so I let it air dry. Currently washing every 2/3 days but I should definitely try to extend. It’s so different for those with thin, quick to dry hair compared o those with thick, hard to dry hair. The amount of hairdressers who have sighed mid-blow-dry - gosh, you really have a lot of hair….

Snowiscold · 18/04/2022 23:48

My hair just doesn’t get greasy or oily. It’s really dry. I wish it was more oily, to be honest. I hardly ever wash it.

I think it depends on if you live in a city or country. When I lived in London my hair got greasy 1within day or two. In country... waaaaay less often.

I was just coming on to say this. Standing on tube platforms as trains approach and walking along busy roads is not good for keeping hair clean.

Covid has been good for my hair as less dirt gets blown at it if I'm WFH. My hair can usually go 5 days or more without looking greasy but it might not look as nice eg it looks flatter which is the trigger to wash it.

Tomlettegregg · 19/04/2022 00:10

I do mine twice a week, it's very thick and curly. Don't use dry shampoo between. It never looks greasy but I don't like the idea of leaving it longer than that. If yours gets greasy quickly, is fine or blonde then there's your answer.

ArabeI · 19/04/2022 00:13

I wash mine once or twice a week at most. I think the longest I've gone is 10 days, and often I think it needs washing after day five. I'm in some long hair groups (mine is only waist length) and I've noticed a lot of people only wash once a week.

I think my hair is naturally dry, though. I use lots of treatments, and use silk products (though that's more about damage prevention) but don't do anything special, and I oil the ends daily.

Baileysoncereal · 19/04/2022 00:14

Wash mine once a week, could easily do 10 days to two weeks though before it looked too terrible. It’s thick coarse curly hair though. I notice if I wear it straight it’s more like 5-6 days.
When I do wash it though I wash it about 3 times in a row, maybe that would help you if it genuinely does always look greasy
