If you don’t wash you hair every two days

I keep seeing instagram models with gorgeous hair saying they only wash it once a week. How?? I’m the same age, sadly 30s. Mine gets so greasy so quickly. How do people do it?

Is it dry shampoo? But isn’t that also bad for it?

OP posts:

I wash mine maybe twice a week. It's quite thick and has a curl to it so the whole washing/drying process is an ordeal in itself. It just doesn't get greasy- dry and itchy if anything. I don't ever use dry shampoo, I hate it.

Nomoreusernames1244 · 18/04/2022 19:13

Human shampoo is no good for dogs, it takes too much of the natural oils out

Wouldn’t that be the same for humans though? Would explain why people’s hair gets greasy as they strip the oils and the scalp tries to compensate by producing more.

oliviastwisted · 18/04/2022 19:18

I’m the same as you OP every second day or more frequently. Well jealous of those who get longer between washes.

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 18/04/2022 19:22

I'm not convinced it's all about training - my greasiness is very hormone-driven so it varies during pregnancy stages and even time of the month. I have thick wavy hair but need to wash every 2-3 days. It also depends on exercise - I have to wash it after a long, sweaty run! Would've thought that would be the same the same for everyone but I guess some people sweat more or less than others

cobumbo1 · 18/04/2022 19:24

I wash 1-2 a week, it's thick & wavy. I think it's drier too now i'm older so doesn't get greasy.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/04/2022 19:25

I have thick, coarse, wavy hair which is quite dry. I wash it twice a week. I could do it less often and never use dry shampoo. It doesn't smell or look greasy but it itches at the nape of my neck after a few days. DDs have straight hair which is thick. They need to wash their hair more than me, it looks greasy and lanky after two days. It is likely to be some hair is more forgiving than others. It takes ages to wash and dry/style mine though whereas they can wash and go.

cobumbo1 · 18/04/2022 19:26

i also don't style it so no product overload.

LoudParrot · 18/04/2022 19:26

I have thick hair which only needs to be washed once a week. It doesn't really get greasy in between.

cobumbo1 · 18/04/2022 19:27

oh & I hardly brush it either!

JoanDarc · 18/04/2022 19:33

I’ve stretched to every second day, was a daily washer before this. I think it’s completely down to hair type, I’ve got fine straight(ish) blonde hair but lots of it, hairdressers love colouring and styling it as it does what it’s told. It just gets too greasy and visibly darker at the roots on day 2 +. The only time I’ve not had an issue was when I was taking roaccutane.

Iknowthis1 · 18/04/2022 19:56

I wouldn't necessarily believe what Instagram models say.

GalactatingGoddess · 18/04/2022 20:00

I have curly hair 3c/3b. I sometimes wash it every 2 days and sometimes every 6-7 days. Depends what hair style and how arsed I can be. After 2 days of not washing the curls aren't as fresh and bouncy, but I can still wear it up in space buns/top bun/sleek low bun and you'd not tell I hadn't washed it.

I've never had dandruff though so not sure if this makes a difference? And I never have greasy hair. Even after putting in a shit load of product.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2022 20:05

I've got really thin hair and have managed to get 2 days sometimes by changing shampoo. I usually put it up on the 3rd day but I've not been able to 'train' it into needing to be washed less at all. I've just accepted it now tbh but I would much rather not have to wash my hair every day to have it looking good.

gunnersgold · 18/04/2022 20:48

I washed one about a week ago .. I wear it up after a few days .. today it's French plaited and will be the same tomorrow. I might wash it on Friday if I can be bothered !

dollyblack · 18/04/2022 20:56

You can’t train all hair types. Mine is fine and thin, i use no styling products and only gently comb it once a day, it still needs washed every day. I don’t wash it every day, but it looks manky the days i don't. I have to keep it short cause its so fine so no option to put it up.

Tippexy · 18/04/2022 20:58

You can’t train your hormones, folks Hmm

Seniorandjunior · 18/04/2022 21:03

@Iknowthis1 speaks the truth.
Don’t believe it.

onepieceoflollipop · 18/04/2022 21:13

My perspective is that I have greasy facial skin and this includes my scalp.
No one seems to suggest that people should ‘train’ their forehead or nose to be less greasy, for me the scalp is the same issue. This is what causes the greasy hair and is often hormone based. How is it different?
Should people train their faces to only need washing weekly?

I wash my hair most days, it is shoulder length. Takes me 2 minutes in a warm (not hot) shower. One wash, tiny splodge of cheap conditioner on the ends. Put up in a towel. 2 minutes to blow dry fringe and smooth the rest down. I can leave it a day with some dry shampoo but I’m not comfortable and the 3-4 minutes of effort to wash it is well worth it for me.
Also I seem to have porous hair so it picks up cooking and other smells very easily. Some people seem to make washing their hair into a major event - unless you like to spend hours styling it or it is very dry and curly, it really isn’t that big a deal to wash as frequently as you choose. Most of us have showers, towels, access to products and hot water. If I was being careful with energy or shampoo use I would turn the water off whilst lathering hair. I don’t use a mega expensive range.

MajesticWhine · 18/04/2022 21:14

I do dry shampoo on the 3rd day. (Sometimes even 4th) and it looks fine.
I used to wash it every day or every other day. It's got a bit easier as I've got older as not quite so greasy.

shedragon · 18/04/2022 21:18

I agree with others.
You can no more ‘train’ your hair to be less greasy than you can change your eye colour. It’s the way you’re made. Hormone changes - puberty, pregnancy, menopause - can affect it but if you’ve oily hair, you have oily hair. I wish there were a remedy, but there isn’t.

Just wash it.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/04/2022 21:23

I have fine hair, lots of it, which has a slight wave in at least holds a wave.

In my 20s/30s when commuting every day on the tube, every day and the rinsing water was grey.

When I had DC and stopped commuting every third day for years.

Post menopause, I can get a 4th day from it. Aging has some small benefits. I don't sweat as much either.

APurpleSquirrel · 18/04/2022 21:23

I only wash my hair once a week, but I have thick, curly hair.
However, I've definitely noticed a difference to my hair since using a 'low poo' shampoo - it's more gentle than many normal shampoos.
I also don't wash out most of my conditioner, but that's due to having curls.

Zooforhouse · 18/04/2022 21:23

Reverse hairwashing (so conditioner first then shampoo) has helped mine. It’s fairly dry and frizzy to start with though, although not thick anymore as I’ve lost a lot post kids. Now happily leave 4 days.

My hair is thick and curl, I can push it to ten days if I don't exercise. But I've only ever washed it when it needs it, so that maybe every other day or once a week. Last 3 washes were last Sunday, this Saturday and today, as my daughter got ketchup in it Saturday and we did an 8mile hike today so it was sweaty
