If you don’t wash you hair every two days

I keep seeing instagram models with gorgeous hair saying they only wash it once a week. How?? I’m the same age, sadly 30s. Mine gets so greasy so quickly. How do people do it?

Is it dry shampoo? But isn’t that also bad for it?

Mine used to get hideously greasy after a day, then I had it bleached. Game changer, the bleach has really dried it out. I can do 3 days now!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 19/04/2022 00:16

I have lots of very fine hair and wash it twice a week, used to have to do it every day.

I started using kids 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner and find it does a much better job of getting my hair clean. I lather rinse, reapply, lather and rinse. If the ends feel dry at all I use a little leave in conditioner just on the ends.

PickAChew · 19/04/2022 00:20

I have thick, wavy curly hair and can rarely go more than 2 days between washes. My scalp ends up disgusting - a sticky, scaly, smelly, spotty, sore mess.

Mine is extremely thick, dry and coarse. I could go about two weeks.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 19/04/2022 15:04

I have thick straight hair and I can go a week. By day 3 it can sometimes go a bit limp so I use Batiste dry shampoo (spray in at bedtime and leave it in overnight) and then it's good for the rest of the week.

soberfabulous · 19/04/2022 15:06

I'd love to know the answer to this and what people do when they exercise!

I run three times a week and play tennis once. My hair is drenched afterwards and just drying it without washing feels repulsive and dirty. It also looks awful.

What do the exercisers do?!

SilverGlassHare · 19/04/2022 15:16

I need to wash mine every day. When I was younger, I'd wash it every other day and it would be really greasy and horrible by the afternoon of the second day - it certainly never "adjusted".

To be honest, while it might be less hassle to wash it every other day or every third day or once a week, even if not greasy I think it would feel pretty dirty, with cooking smells, air pollution, DC's mucky paws touching it, me touching it... I wash my face and body every day so wouldn't miss my hair.

Dundonian · 19/04/2022 15:32

I wash mine every 5 days or so. I make sure the shampoos and conditioners I use are silicone free. I found that silicone made my hair feel dirty very quickly.

BiscuitLover3678 · 19/04/2022 15:37

Do you use conditioner on whole head or just long bits?

I do regular exercise and dance classes. It's not a real problem at the moment but it will be in the summer. I rinse my hair with cold water, and know a few others who do similar.
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/04/2022 16:16

I don't really sweat, tbh. I can work out really hard and barely perspire. Ran 5k this morning and then went to a Pilates class, wasn't even moist afterwards. It certainly doesn't affect my hair.

ArabeI · 19/04/2022 16:19

Same here Greebo. It's those super-hot days in the summer only really. I do get a bit flushed sometimes, though!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 19/04/2022 16:26

I spent ages over lockdown trying to sort my hair out as I have to wash it every day.

Dry shampoo destroyed it so I pied that off. Just leaving it made it look like I'd poured oil all over my head. I've managed to get to 1.5 days with it still looking 'okay' but no way could I get to 2 days without intervention.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 19/04/2022 16:31

I have fine, thin hair and it never gets greasy. Ever.

Obviously I wash it two or three times week because I workout pretty much every day, but I could get away with once every 10 days to be honest.

I also have incredibly dry skin.

Chaoslatte · 19/04/2022 16:34

It’s probably just genetics. I can’t wash mine more than twice a week without my scalp becoming dry and flaky but it takes a week or so to get greasy. My skin is dry rather than greasy too. I’m just a very dry person!

soberfabulous · 20/04/2022 18:38

arabel I tried just rinsing my hair after exercise but it was almost impossible to get a comb through it afterwards and it felt disgusting and looked lank and awful!

Poshjock · 20/04/2022 18:51

I have very fine, long straight hair and wash it once weekly. It rarely gets greasy. I use a shampoo bar.

I used to have greasy scalp and split ends. Now no grease, no split ends. My hair has become flyaway again - since using the bar shampoo. I think standard shampoos were making my hair too heavy. I ran out of shampoo bar (it fell and what little was left shattered) and used standard shampoo and my head is full of dandruff since! Straight back to bars - my Ethique order due tomorrow!

I exercise every day and am ridiculously sweaty every time 🥵

I wash my hair every 4 days so just rub shampoo around the back of my neck and around my ears and forehead when in the shower. Washing my thick ugly hair is a job in itself so I have to improvise on the 3 days I'm not doing it!

I don't either, although I do get hot and I know to put my hair in little buns with partings inbetween if I'm going to do anything tough - it helps keep my head cooler.

I did give mine a midweek wash today, since it's been to the gym a few times, stuffed in a hat and generally faffed with since I last did it on Friday. I could probably have got through tomorrow but that would be it
.

Straight, fine hair here.

Put dry shampoo in your hair where it gets most greasy just after you’ve washed and dried it, it helps to stretch it out. On day 2, I dry shampoo and then blast with hairdryer/round brush. A lot of the ‘grease’ is actually just moisture. Sounds gross but works for me!!

Datsandcogs · 20/04/2022 21:55

I used to wash it every 2 or 3 days then Lockdown. I was already overdue a haircut so it was quickly long enough to twist up and clip back so my hands weren’t going through it nearly as much. By the end of the first Lockdown I was only washing it once a week. Now it’s somewhere between 5 and 8 days, usually 6 or 7 days between washes, depending on what I’ve been doing. But as much as all that it’s also about hair type.

ArabeI · 20/04/2022 21:57

@soberfabulous I think some people use leave in conditioner on the ends. Though that might not help if hair is left lank. I've heard of people using rosemary infused or apple cider vinegar vinegar rinses, but it's possible I've mixed that up with a general final rinse after 'proper' washing.

I think a pre wash oil is supposed to be helpful if you need to wash your hair often and want to avoid damage to the ends. I suppose it all depends on hair type.

My only thought is why is dry shampoo better than just shampooing it properly? I’ve read so much about how dry shampoo isn’t good for toy hair.

Where I live we have very hard water and I need to wash my hair every other day. It feels very lank on day 2.

In my home town the water is very soft and I can get 3 days easily, maybe even 4 if I wore it in a ponytail on day 4. It makes a huge difference. I also notice it feeling in much better condition after a single wash, whereas the hard water seems to dry it out terribly.
