Swimsuits I won't need a bikini wax for

Junebughustle · 17/04/2022 16:12

I had a laparotomy two weeks ago and am two weeks away from a trip somewhere very sunny. I feel well enough to go, but not well enough to get a full bikini wax - just having my initial dressings removed (they were glued on!) was enough to put me off.

Any recommendations for an attractive swimsuit (one piece or high waisted as I have some scars now)? I've looked for short bottomed pieces but not sure if there are search terms I should be making use of!

If you've found this page in search of swimwear that has been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best swimsuits for women useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

Just got back from holiday and a lot of woman were wearing swim suits with boy swim shorts over the top. Would this work for you? You could look for a tankini, and wear the top with mens /boys board shorts or swimming trunks. Alternatively i think you need to search for "low leg" swimsuits.

JurasicPerks · 17/04/2022 16:31

I think you want boy legs.....

Decathlon one piece

freemans tankini

regatta mix of tops and bottoms

ErinAndTonic · 17/04/2022 16:33

You can get swim dresses..

ErinAndTonic · 17/04/2022 16:36

Personally I think they're more flattering/stylish than tankinis..!

Try Cupshe as they have larger bottoms, though the rear view can be a bit skimpy.

I've got this one and it's great. I haven't shaved/ trimmed in about 3 years and this one covers everything.

@Erinandtonic - i'd agree, expect watched a woman constantly pulling down and rearranging her swimming dress at the pool last week, as soon as it got wet it clinged all wrong- hence I will never again recommend one unless you will literally just go from your room to sun lounger and not actually swim in one! (I did get the impression she would have liked to sit and read in peace but her dcs were smaller than mine and wouldn't give her 5 mins peace. There is an upside to my kids being older and not wanting to play with me in the pool all the time!!)

The shorts worn over swimming costumes by other woman did look like standard boy ones so probably bought from mens / boys ranges.

Granted I don't own one but my plus sized friend swears by them! I guess more fabric is always going to have that fun clingy thing going on while wet! Like wearing a T-shirt in the pool Grin

I have just bought a "leg suit" nothing poking out that I don't want but not very stylish. I just googled leg suit and a load came up.

MargosKaftan · 17/04/2022 17:23

@ErinandTonic - there does seem to be a whole range of different swimming costumes that really are crap for swimming in - swimming dresses sadly go in the same category as those underboob cut out swimmers that look like if you actually did a front crawl your tits would pop out the bottom...

Go practical and have fun at the pool rather than be constantly rearranging yourself or being too stressed your swimwear won't cope if you jump on a flume.

Junebughustle · 18/04/2022 09:58

Thank you, some lovely examples! I don't think I'll be doing much actual swimming so will have a look at leg suits and swim dresses!

Sainsbury's and Collectif are my go-tos now because I have a swimsuit from one and a bikini from the other with skirts! High waisted, very comfy, skirt is short enough for sunbathing but long enough to ditch the bikini wax :)

Skinterior · 18/04/2022 10:00

About three years ago I gave up on Womens swimwear and now wear bikini tops with mens swim shorts.

Pockets! No waxing! No tight leg holes biting your bum.

Would never go back - try it 😊

Amazon have swim shorts in a variety of colours and different lengths.

I have the Slazenger tankinis from Sports Direct and a pair of plain black boy shorts from Amazon I wear with different tops. I like this too

Can you not use veet cream to remove. So gentle. I’ve had a bikini wax once it was awful!

Pinktruffle · 18/04/2022 12:35

I have PCOS sonlots of body hair unfortunately. I tend to wear a tankini top and board shorts when I go swimming. Mine are from Roxy and I think they are pretty cute but I got them a couple of years ago. These are similar....

But mine are a bit longer, just above the knee. Search womens board shorts on Google and you'll get lots of options.

There are lots here:

Omg mens shorts as bikini bottoms...with POCKETS is inspired. Why didn't I think of that before?

How do you work out sizing? Maybe Google knows.

I like swim dresses too.

Tried them on - in a lot of places a mens medium is the same as a womans 12.
LowbrowVictoriana · 21/04/2022 23:54

Was also going to suggest board/surf shorts, either over cossie or with tankini top.

I looked for women's ones, but they are quite a rarity... men get to be covered almost down to their knees, but women are expected to have their bodies on show, nethers barely covered in thin material Hmm

Anyway I bought men's but had to take them in at the waist a bit. They're great though... dry quickly for days out at beach on holiday.

Genius! Pockets... Yes!

Vickstory79 · 24/04/2022 14:24

Look at Under Armour, they do board shorts for women as do Billabong and Superdry. I have worn a swim suit with very light weight board shorts on top for years. So comfy and dry very quickly. Also you can add one of those super lightweight racer back running tops.

Peeeas · 24/04/2022 14:35

Decathlon women's printed board shorts plus plain tankini top - super comfy!

Wpcwhatmough · 03/05/2022 20:07

Have look at landsend.co.uk, lots of low leg swimming costumes, tankinis and swim shorts.

THEDEACON · 03/05/2022 21:13

Yours had two leg lengths of swim shorts a few weeks ago
