If you like boots with dresses, what shoes do you wear in summer

I'm starting back at work in an office, I need to look worky but it's a fairly casual place. Ive tried to buy a capsule type wardrobe, or at least most things co-ordinate well together. I'd love a pair of shoes to wear with both dresses and trousers on warmer days that also wont look ridiculous on the not so warm days, ie not sandals! I like ballet pumps but find they dont offer much support, Im not fussed by the trainers with dresses look and I dont think loafers are really my thing. I do love a good chunky boot for cooler days but am struggling for ideas for the summer - anyone have any ideas? Or is this an impossible ask?!

It's impossible! I don't mind brogues with trousers or with tights and a short dress, but they look silly with bare legs imo, or with longer dresses.

I basically need a pair of shoes that are essentially a trainer, but in shoe form!

LimeSupper · 16/04/2022 20:42

I just wear shoes Grin

LillethCrane · 16/04/2022 20:46

I live in dresses, both in and out of work (I’m a classic apple shape and trousers are notoriously difficult for me to find that are skinny enough on the legs whilst big enough to go around the wobbly tummy).

In the winter I wear boots and in the summer I wear very chunky DM sandals. In spring and autumn I am completely stumped…

I have tried nude tights with a silver chunky-soled brogue but it’s just not me. I see people in white platform Russel and Bromley- type trainers and I am always in awe but I couldn’t wear these for work as they are much too casual.

So I’m looking for ideas…!

NotJustACigar · 16/04/2022 20:47

How about T-bar Doc Martens? I love my DM sandals so much but you have said no sandals.

ThePoetsWife · 16/04/2022 20:51

What about canvas style sneakers rather than chunky trainers?

ouch321 · 16/04/2022 20:57

I always used to buy ballet pumps, they go with everything one might usually wear to an office. Did need to replace frequently cos they wear through.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/04/2022 20:57

I've got some Mary Jane type DMs, but they are so heavy and only look/feel okay with tights.

Those canvas boot things are far too casual.

"I don't like any shoes and can't wear sandals or boots in summer... is this impossible"... I think you've answered your own question!!

gunnersgold · 16/04/2022 21:14

Hi tops

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 16/04/2022 21:37

Exactly @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie !!

I love those canvas boots @Cloudwire but I think theyre a bit too casual for work unfortunately. I do like espadrilles, so I may get some for warmer days!

@thesnaleandthewhail I am v fussy Grin

What do you all think of these? They wont do the very hot days, I could get espadrilles for those weeks

How many pairs of shoes is normal to have for work?!

I just found these the other day and they're super comfortable - available in different colours. I'm not normally a pumps person but they have a rubber sole and I don't think they'd wear too quickly. I found they come up half a size small.

dudsville · 16/04/2022 21:42

Boston clogs

glasshalfsomething · 16/04/2022 21:43

Brogues! Clarks ones are super comfortable!

Georgesgrumpymedicine · 16/04/2022 21:44

I meant to say they come up half a size big so you need a size down.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/04/2022 22:11

I think my problem, too, is that black shoes look a bit too 'heavy' for bare legs.

Hi tops far too casual for my work.

I usually end up with black ballet shoes but I don't like them much! Clarks have some leopard print sling backs, which I'm going to investigate.

LunaTheCat · 16/04/2022 22:17

Birkenstock’s - look great with dresses.

Captainj1 · 16/04/2022 22:27

I wear TOMS in the summer. Also have a pair of butter soft boaters from Tommy Hilfiger that are getting scruffy but I can’t find in their current range.

BurbageBrook · 16/04/2022 22:27

I have the same problem. I just never know what shoes to wear in spring and autumn. I guess I like trainers at weekends, but too casual for work. Loafers would be OK but I can never find ones I like. Much prefer boots in winter and sandals in summer.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/04/2022 22:35

Birkenstocks and Toms too casual.

These will probably be universally hated, but I might go and try them on.

marmiteloversunite · 16/04/2022 22:42

I wear Clark's Hamble Oak brogues but in silver. They make me smile.

Thursday37 · 16/04/2022 22:43

I have this problem but because I have weird feet. Boots fit fine, sandals fit fine but I can’t wear any sort of shoe with a solid back or trainers as they don’t fit at the heel.
And yes I’ve tried everything going that purports to remedy this. It doesn’t. My friend is an Orthotist and she just laughs at my feet and says they are beyond help Grin

I basically wear boots until it’s really hot and then sandals. I have some nice closed toe sandals in black and tan for work which look a bit smarter.
