Mid to late 30 year olds - where do you get your clothes?

I really need to buy some new clothes, but I walked around a few clothes shops in my town the other day and I just didn't like anything. Dresses especially were all horrible. I just didn't see anything I thought would suit me that I liked and was practical for life as a mam.

Where do you all shop?

I would also like to know this! Would be especially grateful for tips from fellow shorties...

thesnaleandthewhail · 14/04/2022 19:52

It's quite hard. I find i can't buy from Zara and shops like that because the cut and material is too crap. I suit Hush, Cos, some of the John Lewis brands like and/or, Kin. Maybe whistles. Sometimes H&M. me&em.

redavocado · 14/04/2022 19:53

I'm mid 30s and I've given up on the shops and basically resorted to stitch fix for everything. I give them quite specific briefs each time and it's working out pretty well!

I just don't have the time, energy or inclination to shop any more and I find most of the stuff on the high street is such bad quality now. I recently bought a pair of trousers in River Island for the first time in years and the button had come off by the time I got home. Similarly I found the seams of a Zara dress were coming apart when I went to wear it for the first time. So annoying!

BundtCake · 14/04/2022 19:54

Zara, some next, mango, H&M

pebble7 · 14/04/2022 19:56

H&M, Zara, I got a couple of nice bits I'm New Look today as well. I will buy online from ASOS and occasionally BooHoo but find the quality not that great

hoorayandupsherises · 14/04/2022 20:04

Pretty much exclusively TK Maxx as an actual shop (but I realise it's an acquired taste), mixed in with Zalando.

ColdSeptember · 14/04/2022 20:14

Jigsaw if I'm feeling flush, Hobbs for work stuff, Hush (a lot is a bit flouncy for my taste but there are some nice bits), John Lewis, M&S for underwear, Snag for tights, Sweaty Betty for exercise gear (in the sales). Zara might be an option if I halved my body weight. Sometimes Next.

MsFrog · 14/04/2022 20:15

Thanks - brands and places I haven't heard so far, including Stitch Fix, which I've just Googled. I can't imagine using them, though, as I have no style so not sure what will come out of the "style quiz"!

I’m 35. I shop in M&S, Next (occasionally), Joules, H&M occasionally

greenbirdsong · 14/04/2022 20:20

I'm also interested in this! I'm 37 and feel like everything is either crop tops and stuff too young or stuff that seems too old and sensible.
I have totally lost my sense of style and what suits me and have no idea where to shop these days.

orangetriangle · 14/04/2022 20:21

I am older but I dont think you can beat m and s for shoes underwear tights
Clarke's also for shoes
Clothes Next George tu sainsburys Peacocks dorothy perkins

triplecheeese · 14/04/2022 20:26

I'm 35 with two very small DC and mainly shop in Next, Joules, M&S, Thought. Underwear from Molke. TBH I am in holey leggings and tees most of the time...

RedRobin100 · 14/04/2022 20:27

Urghh I just don’t shop any more. I look horrendous most of the time.
Lockdown, maternity, WFH and maternity again hadn’t helped..
I despair looking round shops. Last few things I’ve bought have been John Lewis online

wouldukissafrog · 14/04/2022 20:32

Following for advice!! Lost my sense of style massively

GrapesThatThrive · 14/04/2022 20:36

I'm 37. I'm trying not to shop too much for myself and I'm breastfeeding so a bit limited. I've been buying a lot of charity shop and Vinted stuff. I like a charity shop because it's not one particular brand or style or whatever. Suppose it's similar to TK Maxx in that way.

Also it's cheap and the money goes to charity so doesn't matter so much if it's not the exact perfect thing. Just re-donate it if it really doesn't work. The latest charity shop things I've bought have been H&M, Warehouse, French Connection, Ted Baker and Yumi.

I miss our local Debenhams. It had oasis, warehouse, Wallis, coast, red herring, mantaray and a load of other brands. Lots of choice.

EarlyStarters · 14/04/2022 20:37

37 - short size 12 at the moment but much happier an 8/10 so need to pull my finger out and shift the winter weight.

M&S is (maybe depressingly) becoming my go to shop for basics. And H&M - but then also my closest shopping centre they're the two biggest stores so I like to tell myself that's why.

Next I'd get more in but I find the prices a bit inflated for stuff not being much better than M&S and H&M.

Also like TU for good value basics.

Joules I do ok in and Boden I used to like a lot but seems shitty this year.

New Look I like browsing in for ideas but rarely buy much as find the fabrics crappy.

Looking forward to reading the replies here and maybe finding some new inspiration.

hepaticanobilis · 14/04/2022 20:37

I have a pretty specific style and know what I like, but I have clothes from a range of different shops.

Most recently Aesthetic Laundry, White Stuff, Seasalt, Mango, Lucy & Yak and M&S.

Cheesewiz · 14/04/2022 20:38

Zara, urban outfitters, H&m, asos

5329871e · 14/04/2022 20:44

Boden, White Stuff, M&S, other stuff that pops up when I browse John Lewis.

SRK16 · 14/04/2022 20:48

Oliver Bonas, warehouse, recently got some nice bits in m&s, John Lewis, some stuff on hush. Sometimes H&M.

Sexnotgender · 14/04/2022 20:52

I’m 39 and 5ft 1.

Casual
Jeans - boden
Jumpers - nearly new cashmere
T-shirts - rapanui
Jackets - wax Barbour

Work
Bottoms - boden, their petite length is perfect for me
Tops - again cashmere usually, or a mixture of tk maxx, gap merino wool or Reiss.

SellFridges · 14/04/2022 20:52

I’ve done Stitch Fix a few times and it’s been good and the items good quality. You input details on sizing etc, but also do lots of this/that type quizzes and swiping on outfits or items.

Otherwise I like Oliver Bonas, Hush, H&M basics, some Next stuff (but sometimes some of their labels). I’m early 40s though.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 14/04/2022 21:00

Hobbs, Boden, Jigsaw for tops, dresses and trousers.
Fatface for jeans and tops.
Gap for jeans.

Charmer7 · 14/04/2022 21:03

Also a vote for stitch fix here. I feel really stuck lately, still carrying an extra stone or 2 of baby weight, plus short with big boobs means the current cropped top style looks awful on me. I feel very much stuck in a rut, not fitting into very trendy places like warehouse, or places like M&S that still feel too 'grown up'
Stitch fix has been super useful over the last 6 months, I've been sent some great bits I probably wouldn't have usually considered. You can be very specific about patterns/colours/types of things you're looking for and give as much feedback as possible.
Apart from that I tend to pick bits from Dorothy Perkins, new look, joules, fat face and some fun pieces from river island.

Leftbutcameback · 14/04/2022 21:05

M&S for short length trousers, and Next. But also charity shops, and sometimes Primark and H&M
