Mid to late 30 year olds - where do you get your clothes?

I really need to buy some new clothes, but I walked around a few clothes shops in my town the other day and I just didn't like anything. Dresses especially were all horrible. I just didn't see anything I thought would suit me that I liked and was practical for life as a mam.

Where do you all shop?

I buy most of my things from charity shops but if I buy new I look at Fat Face, White Stuff and Weird Fish. I seem to pick up a lot of stuff at Mantaray from Debenhams in the charity shops. I'm 39.

Favouritefruits · 15/04/2022 09:03

Boden, Next, Joules and occasionally M&S for boots and trainers.

SuperPug · 15/04/2022 09:16

If I had known how much the high st was going to deteriorate, I would have kept my old Warehouse, Kookai etc stuff. Kookai online is just - odd.
At the moment - COS, Whistles (although quality seems to have gotten a bit worse), some Karen Millen, Oliver Bonas. Also tricky to find stuff that fits a larger bust whilst not being massively bigger elsewhere. Been impressed with COS for this.

TruffleNoir · 15/04/2022 10:42

As well as listing the shops can any one say what kind of clothes you're wearing?

I'm 35 and live in leggings, jeans and tops etc but would nice to see some inspiration on styles for day to day but also going out for a meal/drinks xx

simplificate · 15/04/2022 18:05

Toast, COS, Wyse, Ganni and sometimes French high st (Sezane, Sessun, Claudie Pierlot, Maje etc.) though stick to mostly natural fibres. Uniqlo and Muji for basics. Margaret Howell, APC and Matches for splurges. I still browse Zara, Mango and Stories for the looks but rarely find the quality there.

SteakExpectations · 15/04/2022 18:08

M&S, Joules and jeans from Very. Some tops from New Look but buying less and less from there these days.

CorsicaDreaming · 15/04/2022 18:09

Boden online.

It seems very spendy but has loads of sales and promos so I barely ever buy anything at their face value prices.

Clothes do last really well from there too.

Due to small breastfeeding baby I am mostly in leggings/joggers and scruffy tops at the moment but when I'm a bit more 'together I generally live in casual dresses with tights and boots like this sort of thing:

www.brakeburn.com/products/zig-zag-broderie-shirt-dress-aw21?variant=39373730250813

Or in the summer, jersey dresses of every colour and shape, with pumps. Mostly from Boden but Fat Face, White stuff etc will have some too.

Recently for a night out I bought the dress in the photo. It is nicer in real life I think. Wore it with a grey Ted Baker leather bomber jacket, black tights and grey suede heeled boots.

I'm not the height of style, can't do Cos etc, but I think I look alright, and I am always comfortable, able to walk, and warm/cool enough. Too old for anything else Grin

I'm also a fan of a stretchy skirt paired with chunky knit jumper or cardigan. Today I was wearing a stretchy knitted knee length skirt in a mustard colour with black tights and a chunky knitted giraffe print cardigan.

florianfortescue · 15/04/2022 18:48

Depends on budget but generally:
Jigsaw
Arket
Baukjen
& Other Stories
Cos
Zara

Also a fan of stitch fix. I find if you’re specific about what you want they’ll really try and cater to your style/needs. And you can just send it back if it doesn’t suit. I normally keep 3 out of the 5 items sent. I also find it’s great for trying different brands, I’ve had great stuff sent from Sugarhill and French Connection which has led me to buy these brands independently. There’s always a core to be had so if you don’t like anything you won’t pay anything. If anyone wants my £15 code here it is (covers your £10 styling fee or takes £15 off whatever you buy)

Am starting a new job soon and honestly am glad much of it is WFH cos not sure I can find anything nice. Keep meaning to try silkfred, their dresses look nice and reasonably priced.

simonsaysquack · 15/04/2022 19:22

New things I've brought recently are from Warehouse, Joanie, Thunder Egg and Glamorous. The latter is very hit and miss but every so often there's some nice bits, always a bargain to be found on the eBay outlet. (I'm 39 btw)

Candean · 15/04/2022 22:45

I like Unfolded lately - they only make the clothes once ordered and helps provide education etc - planet friendly and for a good cause. Really good quality pieces, I've bought a few things from them so far.

MsFrog · 15/04/2022 22:52

Thanks for all these replies, loads of ideas to look in to! I'm reassured to hear other people feel similarly lost style-wise!

There is in my opinion a void for decent quality women clothes at a reasonable mid range price. i’m often less than impressed or simply can’t afford things. Although I’m not always impressed with the offerings from more expensive places either.

I do like H&M, Mango and ASOS. I tend to buy natural fibres from them though. Another two places that have hit my radar recently are Promod and Lindex. I got a jumper from Lindex which was great quality and its been my favourite jumper this year, I’ve not got anything from Promod so can’t vouch for quality, but they have some Sezane type jumpers at reasonable prices.

Nitflux · 16/04/2022 06:37

Uniqlo, Uniqlo, Uniqlo. Good fabrics, good colours, washes well.

Have also discovered Samsoe & Samsoe which I absolutely love.

Check H&M in the summer - last year they did some excellent basics in good, neutral colours.

Sandro for a treat. I like things that cover my bum and they have great cardigan/jacket type things that do that.

BusySittingDown · 16/04/2022 06:42

I seem to be obsessed with River Island at the moment. All my most recent purchases seem to be from there.

BusySittingDown · 16/04/2022 06:46

Meant to add, I've bought a few "going out" things from Lipsy.

Most of my casual stuff seems to be River Island, Topshop (ASOS) and H&M. I don't find H&M that great quality though. I like it for the kids stuff as their stuff isn't going to last anyway.

RoseWindow · 16/04/2022 07:19

Nobody has said ASOS but I get a lot of stuff on there because the delivery options are very convenient and they have so many brands that when you put in ‘Grey work trousers’ or whatever you’ll get a million ideas from places you’d never look normally. Quality obviously variable and always check the materials section for what it’s made from. H&M and Charity shops for the rest.

Zara & American Vintage are my go to’s. I also buy a lot of vintage!! Online, at markets or wherever I see it.
I don’t understand the obsession with Hush - I find it’s really expensive for what it is and a bit ‘classic’- Is it insanely good quality? Whenever I look on their website nothing grabs me at all. I buy some basics from H&M but wish I didn’t! Don’t like the instore experience and find sometimes it’s crap quality.

CaptainMal · 16/04/2022 08:09

Age 37, 5ft7 hourglass, size 8/10 here.

I shop The Fold (workwear), The Outnet (bits and pieces - especially Zimmerman for dresses), J Brand (jeans), With Nothing Underneath (shirts), Vivien of Holloway (pencil skirts, avoiding the prints and some of the jazzier combinations), Jigsaw (coats), Rigby & Peller (underwear), Jones (shoes), Russell & Bromley/Hobbs (boots), trousers from Boden or Etro.

Pp asked for outfit combinations so mine are:

Workwear (all seasons)

  • Silk blouse, pencil skirt, blazer, pointed flats or slingbacks
  • silk blouse (tucked in), cigarette trousers, blazer, loafers/brogues/pointed flats
  • Occasionally a smart fitted dress eg the Forever dress from Karen Millen, or a wrap dress from eg Usisi Sisters

Casual (winter)

  • cashmere jumper (sometimes borrowed from DP), skinny jeans, ankle boots. City coat or cape.
  • ribbed polo neck (Jigsaw do good thin wool/silk ones), midi tweed pencil skirt, knee-high boots.

Casual spring/summer

  • Slightly oversized shirt (With Nothing Underneath), tucked into skinny cropped jeans or a denim pencil skirt (Baukjen), sneakers or Birkenstocks
  • linen or cotton wrap dress, with sandals or Birckenstocks

So, nothing particularly edgy or cool but I always feel good when I am wearing these things.

And other stories

Southbucksldn · 16/04/2022 08:20

For basics: M and S and COS
Then occasionally for a treat: Agnes b; APC; Issey Miyake and Liberty.
Whenever private equities get involved they ruined the quality - Whistles used to be great but isn’t a what it was. I still take a look but it is a struggle now to find good stuff.
