Can an apple shape wear Bombshell dresses?

Just that really... am a classic apple, size 18 with large convex belly and no waist. Several weddings coming up - in a mix of cultures which is also a slight concern as they are a very particular look - and just wondering how they look on people like me.

I don't know what a bombshell dress is tbh but if you feel good in it go for it

Valhalla17 · 10/04/2022 11:12

Clearly an advertising post!

AnnaSW1 · 10/04/2022 11:13

I've never heard of a bombshell dress

AnnaSW1 · 10/04/2022 11:13

They obviously need it as no ones heard of them Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 10/04/2022 11:18

I have no idea how people have never heard of Bombshell as they are always suggested on Style & Beauty if someone is going to a wedding.

OP I am the same shape and I wouldn't look at them as I reckon I am the wrong shape. I suit a tummy skimming shift type shape best.

whatsinaname2 · 10/04/2022 11:18

I wouldn't, they're a fairly old fashioned look. Something my Nanna might wear.

SheWoreYellow · 10/04/2022 11:19

Yeah. I think a column sort of shape is better for an apple.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/04/2022 11:33

Actually I have just had a lol on the Bombshell website and I think this style might works. It comes in loads of colours and fabrics.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/04/2022 11:33

I had a look not a lol!

PermanentTemporary · 10/04/2022 11:33

Thank you! Definitely not advertising Grin but have just seen some people looking nice in them on twitter and wondered. Am now wandering round John lewis and looking at the general silhouette which is certainly completely opposite to what they do. I think I will avoid. Whistles looks a better bet if I can drop a few kilos...

Never heard of them until now but i'd imagine they suit hourglass/pear more.

GettingStuffed · 10/04/2022 11:45

A bombshell dress is another name for a wiggle dress not necessarily from Bombshell.

Maireas · 10/04/2022 11:49

To be clear, OP, do you mean the brand "Bombshell" (I've not heard of them before) or do you mean a general 50s style dress?
I think if it's the latter, maybe it depends on the cut. Post an image to give us an idea.

bellac11 · 10/04/2022 11:51

Quite frumpy and old fashioned, sort of 80s look from the picture someone posted above

PermanentTemporary · 10/04/2022 11:56

Im thinking of 'Bombshell London' the brand. But I think I will go another way. I just can't bear high necks which are everywhere at the moment.

Melissa Murrell is a personal stylist but gives brilliant advice on Youtube as to how to dress all sorts of body shapes.

KimikosNightmare · 10/04/2022 12:22

Hannah's mother Ruth in The Split wears a Bombshell dress in the scene when she and Ronnie make up.

Maireas · 10/04/2022 12:25

Give us an idea of colour and style that you like, and the kind of weddings you're attending and we can make suggestions.

gunnersgold · 10/04/2022 12:33

I think you could do better , it will make you look a bit ' barrely.' You need to skin the waist and show off your legs !

gunnersgold · 10/04/2022 12:36

This with a pink blazer really suits apples ( I work there and dressed someone the other day and she looked amazing ! )

They’re so matronly! I’ve got no idea of the age of the people on here who keep recommending them but I’m 60 and they’re too old for me! You want something to skim, and yes if you’ve got a couple of months lose a few kg. The fast 800 is fantastic.

LaMarschallin · 10/04/2022 13:06

Nigella Lawson has worn them for a while:

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1203038/Nigella-Lawson-buys-12-identical-dresses--look-like-wardrobe.html

but she's a definite pear.
I don't think they'd suit even a fairly slim apple like me.

PermanentTemporary · 10/04/2022 13:15

Gunners I'm 52 though. Honestly I think that's too short, I do have decent legs but they're not what they were 25 years ago.

I'll make a new thread but for my own thinking -

  1. May barn wedding in the UK countryside, friends, quite a bit younger than me
  2. Portuguese Catholic wedding, friend
  3. East Coast USA April wedding, quite well heeled, boyfriends family

I think the simple truth is that one outfit is not going to stretch to all these.
