Has anyone actually had regular success with Stitchfix?

I had five boxes from Stitch Fix last year, didn’t keep anything from any of them.

To be fair they refunded a couple of the charges because their stylist just hadn’t listened to what I wanted, but otherwise it was pretty disastrous.

The first two boxes were full of tunic tops and waterfall cardigans. I had to spell it out for them that these things don’t suit me as I’m a bit fat (size 18). I said I didn’t need any striped tops, jeans or trainers at first, and that’s what they sent!

A couple of boxes in a row I said I needed tan coloured flats, even sent them links to ones I liked; they said they had none.

So I cancelled all the boxes and have just given them a second chance, almost a year later. I asked for tan flats (again), smart navy/black trousers suitable for work and a navy blue blazer style jacket.

They sent…
A pink boxy jumper
Navy cropped, wide leg trousers with a fabric belt (so not smart and not suitable for work)
A long sleeved black jumpsuit with a red pattern - nice but completely unsuitable for summer.
A pair of ugly Kurt Geiger mules (these: www.elcorteingles.com/en/womens-fashion/A26192167-kurt-geiger-womens-tan-leather-mules/#)
A quite nice blazer, but it was red.

It’s all gone back.
I’m now convinced they don’t listen to what you say in the notes. I do the spinner thing most days to give them ideas of what I like, but the problem when they show you an outfit is that you might like one part of it but hate the rest, so there’s a danger that if you click yes they send you the bit you didn’t like!

If you have success with Stitch Fix…. how?!

I’ve just received my third and last box today. They seem to send me brands I’ve never heard of that cost the earth but are awful quality. I’ve kept one thing from the first two boxes just so as not to lose my £10, but honestly I could have got both items much cheaper elsewhere.
This third box is just a disaster and I don’t like any of it. I asked for flats and got no shoes at all. Last time I asked for low rise ankle boots to wear with jeans. They sent some Toms boots that resembled wellies.

beenaroundtheblox · 09/04/2022 18:12

I keep on average 2 things a box. I've had a few without anything though. I think they do listen and send me what I ask for. I find the casual stuff better i suppose. I've had a few great pairs of jeans. My 'thinner' friends have great success. Anyone bigger than me complains. I don't know how much of a coincidence that is, I'm a size 14

Candleabra · 09/04/2022 18:14

No. Weirdly I found they got worse the more feedback I gave them.
I was pleasantly surprised by the first couple of boxes and kept a few things, but I gave up in the end as the stuff they sent was beyond awful.

Candleabra · 09/04/2022 18:16

Oh yes and the spinner thing - is this your style?
Some were just comical. I was always thinking whose style could this possibly be?

angrygoat2 · 09/04/2022 20:46

I keep on average one thing per box - I do think mine have gotten better over time. Quality varies; I had one dress that fell apart after one wear but it was a well-known, mid-range high street brand, so I don't think stitch fix are necessarily to blame for that.

That said, none of the items I've kept are things I ever would've tried on in a shop. Nor are they things I "needed", and I in no way indicated that I wanted them. I enjoy the element of surprise and being introduced to something new, so I rarely play style shuffle as I don't want more of the same.

My understanding was that it's not designed to help you get a particular, more to open your eyes to new things and expand your wardrobe. But I could be wrong. Must be annoying that the stylist doesn't even try, though, that's very poor and makes me question if any styling goes into it all...

angrygoat2 · 09/04/2022 20:47

Get a particular item

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 09/04/2022 21:49

No. I had 3 or 4 boxes from them, never kept anything and I’m pretty sure, as a pp mentioned, the more feedback I gave, the worse the boxes got.

Pyri · 09/04/2022 21:51

I absolutely agree that the more feedback you give the worse they are?!

I told them I was pregnant and they sent no pregnancy clothes but instead a load of frumpy, mumsy cardigans 2 sizes bigger. I complained twice but never heard back so have cancelled all boxes

Hope they’re reading this thread!

coffeeneeded · 09/04/2022 21:55

Bloody awful. I kept one thing and I think I had 4 boxes all in all. Nothing fitted and it was never something that I had actually liked- in fact it was stuff that I had disliked.

I mean- what's the point?!

RetrainRetrain · 09/04/2022 23:17

I have tried it again recently and had a jumpsuit and bright boxy jumper that I'd never have tried on but really liked. But I agree they get worse with feedback. The spinner thing is bizarre too - every outfit they show me seems to feature a waterfall cardigan (very much on my never send list)

maryberryslayers · 09/04/2022 23:59

I tried one box and sent the lot back. It was vile. Nothing like anything I said I liked.
I prefer good quality clothes and am happy to pay a bit little more (boden, hush etc) but I got a box of cheap tat made from disgusting material that looked horrible on me for much less than I said I was prepared to pay.
I think they just send what ever crap they have in.

DSGR · 10/04/2022 07:11

OP, try Boden for your smart work trousers, or Hobbs.
And if you have the budget Russell and Bromley probs my have tan flats?

hopeishere · 10/04/2022 07:23

If you've found tan flats you like just buy them. They probably don't have deals with the brands you chose so couldn't use them.

What prices are you putting in as prepared to pay?

I generally get onething I hate, one maybe and three I like. I prefer branded items than their own brand (mauvette).

I assume the "stylist" thing is bollocks and it's an algorithm.

Haus1234 · 10/04/2022 07:27

I keep 2-3 things per box. I agree they send some real shite but also nearly all of my absolute favourites are from there so it’s a bit of a mix! I’ve never tried to get shoes / accessories - mostly just dresses and blouses.

CatchingStars · 10/04/2022 07:32

I've had 3 boxes - all ok and I've kept all the stuff. Do you do the preview in the email? I'm ruthless in that - I'd rather see what's there and say yes or no than have to send back. I've had some stuff I'd definitely not have ever looked at in a shop that's really worked, a coat my 23 year old has snaffled, and for me it works -so far. The spinner thing though - seriously? Thumbs down more than up for me on that

WhatIsThisPlease · 10/04/2022 07:34

I agree with PP that the more feedback I gave the worse they got. Stopped them after my 5th.

I did get one lovely top which I wear to death and a couple of dresses which I've never worn.

Quality seems a bit TK Maxx never heard of brands but with massive price tags.

Another good point. First few times I wanted "a surprise" but it's far better to weed out stuff you hate. I find the stuff in the preview is generally awful.
TulipsGarden · 10/04/2022 07:51

I agree it gets worse with more feedback - bizarre! I also think it's worse for bigger sizes - I'm an 18 and rarely got anything that suited me, whereas my size 10 friend loves it and most of her wardrobe is from StitchFix now.

I once asked for dainty black flats, and described some I'd seen in the spinner thing. They said they didn't have any and sent me clumpy black boots?!

I've closed my account now. It was good during lockdowns but pointless now.

MaryBeardsShoes · 10/04/2022 08:00

I usually have at least a couple of pieces I love. Things I wouldn't have looked at in a store but suit me really well. It's really helped me to vary my wardrobe! And I'm certainly not one of those people who can wear anything!

Baileystruffle · 10/04/2022 08:01

I have had about 7 boxes now. They have got significantly better over time. Once I got a stylist who seemed to pick a few things I like, now I ask for her every time in the note. I have done the style shuffle thing most days over the last year, (I really enjoy doing it in the morning!) which I think has massively helped. I don't always get the things I ask for in the note but they often send me other stuff I like. I have mostly just bought 1 or maybe 2 items each time, but this most recent box I bought 3, but honestly could have bought the lot, only a couple of things I liked but didn't really need. I am same size as you. I find they are particularly great for me for trousers, have had 2 fab pairs of work trousers and great fitting jeans from them, which for me is worth it as I find it soon hard to find trousers.
For success: Do the style shuffle every day long term so they keep an up to date view on what you like.
In your note: Put a few things or types of things you are looking for but don't put what you don't want, as sometimes the algorithm picks up those words and you could get them in your preview.
Anything you DON'T want, write that together with preferred shapes in your profile note instead.
Before I order, I go on and update my profile to check if I don't want particular items- eg. If I really don't want shoes or a coat this time I will click on them in the avoidance section of the profile so they won't send any.
Be open to what they send, but if you want a specific item you may be better off getting it elsewhere.
Always do the preview.

Franca123 · 10/04/2022 08:07

I have had one box and kept three items. One was a dress I never would have tried at the shop but which looked great. A jacket I owned years ago but in a larger size and a pair of trousers. The shoes they sent were perhaps the most hideous shoes I've ever sent. I'm looking forward to my next box.

I've had the same stylist for all my boxes so maybe that helps as well? I'm the same as you in terms of updating my profile. When I order my box I try to be specific about what I'd want, and I'm very specific in the feedback preview - there was a leather jacket in this preview that I really want but I know I won't wear now till autumn so I've asked for it later in the year - it's referenced on the style note in the box that it'll be added to a fix at the end part of the year. It's replacement was a short pinky/peachy denimy jacket that I thought "no way" but actually I've just put it on and I really like it - I'd never have even looked at it in a shop
Haneggsandchips · 10/04/2022 08:32

I had a good first box with Stitch Fix and then went downhill. One box I asked specifically for shoes but not trainers. They sent a pair of white trainers that I'd previously sent back and a green dress that was virtually identical to one I'd bought before.

Have you tried Thread? It's a different concept, so they send outfit ideas and you choose what to buy, but it's all from known brands. Their personal stylist service is also really good when you message with a specific request - they even send me links to things outside their platform. I buy nearly everything from there now - they keep a record of past purchases and will show you new outfit ideas for things you already own. Great for inspiration/window shopping as well as buying. Only downside is delivery takes a bit of time.

Enko · 10/04/2022 08:39

Another one who finds it get worse the more feedback they have. I gave up after 4 boxes where on the 4th they sent me black trousers and a denim jacket. Both denim and black was on my never send list. I gave very poor feedback and cancelled the service. I have 2 cardigans I kept and 1 pair of trousers for work blue and wide in style. However they are all stuff I would have looked at if out shoping myself.

Fallulah · 10/04/2022 09:56

I do always look at the preview and usually say no to all of it! Maybe I’m just fussy.
I think there’s definitely an element of them struggling with larger sizes too.
I’ve generally found the quality ok - I get sent a lot of Hobbs, Boden, etc. Its just that some of it is so ugly! 😂
