Do any hairdresser cut hair properly?

I got my hair cut last week. I've long hair and she just brushed it and cut it. No sections, just one line of cutting. It's all uneven and looks like shite. Is this normal?

@Imdoingitnext

As someone growing a bad cut out - yet again! I envy those of you who've found a good cutter I'm still searching and it's a toss between new local ones a 100 mile return trip to a v good popular one

Does anyone know any good cutters in the Nottingham Derby Staffordshire area?

DNA Artspace in Nottingham. It’s where Vicky Mclure goes.
Imdoingitnext · 10/04/2022 17:31

Thanks @Blossomtoes. Is that where you go now?

ninnynonny · 10/04/2022 17:33

Blimey. This has really shocked me! My hairdresser is absolutely brilliant - I've never had a bad cut. He does charge a lot of money though (not a brag, there are disability reasons I need to go there, but I still would!) Surely there must be plenty who are really good?

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2022 17:35

@Imdoingitnext

Thanks *@Blossomtoes*. Is that where you go now?
No, I’m in Cambridgeshire but I have several friends who live in Nottingham and they all go there. Most have short cuts and they’re immaculate, I’d definitely go if I was local to it.
Imdoingitnext · 11/04/2022 14:15

Thanks @Blossomtoes I'll check them out.👍

Things seem have gone the opposite way nowadays where stylists seem to prefer to work on long hair and avoid working on the more challenging mid length and shorter hair. What does this say about the skill level of hair stylists and of hairdresser training?

I suspect that they would be clueless at shorter, wavier, unstraighened hair. I hardly ever see anyone with a fringe these days.

If someone has good bone structure, a short cut can be so pretty.

I refuse to straighten my hair because I don't want to be at the mercy of the element. A friend has a glorious mop of curls that she straightens into submission and she panics at a drop of rain

Imdoingitnext · 11/04/2022 15:16

@KirstenBlest
Yes. The number of times the hairstylist has tried to straighten my hair before they cut it as they say it's easier for them to cut it. I end up looking like I've got a helmet on my head until I wash it out.
I've currently trying to grow out a cut that's varying thicknesses and lengths from someone who claimed to be able to cut curly wavy hair.

goodnightgrumble · 11/04/2022 15:35

For those of you who cut your own hair. How the hell do you cut layers? I have long shoulders length hair with layers and would not know where to start!

CurbsideProphet · 11/04/2022 15:43

When I lived in London I found a brilliant hairdresser. I followed her when she opened her own salon. I miss her very much as I live too far away now.

I found a very good hairdresser here, but she "ghosted" me after covid reopening, I presume because she gets more money from clients who have colour done regularly.

I've been to another hairdresser, but she didn't get the shape right. It's tiresome finding a hairdresser and building up the relationship etc so they understand my hair / what suits my face shape etc.

OakPine · 11/04/2022 16:08

I used to go to an expensive Edinburgh well known hairdresser. I paid through the nose but the cut was usually ok.
Even then, I've had some horror cuts from them, mostly too short.

I went to another well known Edinburgh hairdresser about 10 years ago. I sat in the chair, and literally the guy took 15 mins to cut around my very straight bob hair. No sections. It looked ok but cost me a fortune and I was well pissed off at the lack of attention to detail.

But since the pandemic, after I got over the horror of the first pandemic home cut, I've found that I've never liked my hair more than when I just cut the ends myself.

Saves a fortune.

I guess if I had an interview or a wedding to go to, I'd go get it cut professionally.

OakPine · 11/04/2022 16:09

Why is there no edit? Not 15 mins in the post above - 5 minutes!!

mewkins · 11/04/2022 17:14

My hairdresser is great and takes her time but I've been going to her for years. She is good at short styles. My dd has really long hair and has never been to the hairdresser. I can easily trim it myself. I also spent my student years cutting friends hair for them and still do the occasional trim if someone asks me.

borninthewrongclimate · 11/04/2022 19:20

All the hairdressers I've had have been good at cutting straight hair I think.

The trouble is I have extremely fine very curly hair.

I recently found a curly hair expert within driving distance and for the first time in my over seventy years I've had a good cut. She cuts it dry which makes all the difference.

Imdoingitnext · 11/04/2022 19:22

@borninthewrongclimate do you mind saying where your curly hair expert is in the country. Thanks

ClaudiusTheGod · 11/04/2022 19:52

I found that once my hair went white at a relatively young age, my hairdresser wasn’t bothered any more. There’s no interest in helping my dry, coarse, slightly curly hair to look its best. Ive been consigned to the Old Lady demographic.

StCharlotte · 11/04/2022 20:02

I've recently started going to a new hairdresser. She's late 20s I'd say.

I asked to go from a shoulder length bob to a much shorter layered bob. Her reaction was "Excellent - I get to do a proper cut for a change!". She's done a fabulous job and I love it.

cansu · 11/04/2022 21:43

I think the danger lies in moving to a new hairdresser. I moved from one good hairdresser to someone new on a recommendation as I thought it was getting expensive. He made a terrible mess of my hair. Thankfully, I then found someone else who I will be sticking with! I think once you have found someone who works for you, you stay put! Don't be lured into thinking the grass is greener.

BasicBiscuit · 11/04/2022 21:56

If we're doing recommendations....

I have very very fine hair that I hated for decades because it didn't matter how much money I threw at it in fancy salons, it always looked rubbish. Just flat and wispy and crap.

Then I got my hair cut by Sonya at Taylor Taylor in Shoreditch. She is not cheap but she is a fucking sorceress. My hair now looks sharp, holds the cut for months and I finally feel good about it.

It's a fairly straightforward cut, just a sharp bob, but she takes AGES - like an hour - and really focuses, doesn't chat or anything. I love her and I'd pay triple what she asks for, frankly.

LollipopsandCrisps · 11/04/2022 22:15

@Frenziedandfurious try Chelsea at Vain Chester. Whilst I haven't had my hair cut with her, I follow all the stylists there on insta, and she has amazing curly hair herself and knows what to do!

borninthewrongclimate · 12/04/2022 08:26

Imdoingitnext

She's in Scotland. Is that any good for you?

Hereforthedramaz · 12/04/2022 08:35

I have wavy to curly hair and until my early 30s had no idea I could have a good haircut!

I've bow found a curly hair specialist in Birmingham and I travel an hour and a half to get there and am very happy to do so!

They also colour curls very well but it's the cuts I go for. As pp have said it's a dry cut, wash dry and then finish off.

Imdoingitnext · 12/04/2022 08:37

@borninthewrongclimate thanks. I'm in the East Midlands so a bit far

Imdoingitnext · 12/04/2022 08:38

@Hereforthedramaz is that spring? Matthew?

SScoobiedoo · 12/04/2022 08:41

My hairdresser is great!
I wonder how hairdressers are supposed to be good at cutting when everyone has long straight hair which requires very different cutting to a short style.

Hereforthedramaz · 12/04/2022 08:48

Ha! Yes! He is great!
