Do any hairdresser cut hair properly?

I got my hair cut last week. I've long hair and she just brushed it and cut it. No sections, just one line of cutting. It's all uneven and looks like shite. Is this normal?

That's a great idea @Chananigan I've spent hours searching Facebook and agree it's not always the best that get the recommendations. I've gone to salons on the basis of fbk recs and they've made a complete mess of my hair.

Rathmobhaile · 08/04/2022 10:42

I've just been in for my hair appointment. Its a new hairdresser as the last one had me looking like a cut my 80 year old mother would have. As my hair is grey Ifelt old and dowdy. So i went to this new place this morning. Showed her the cut I wanted. She said "I wouldn't be great at this type of cut but sure I'll give it a go". So I booked for this afternoon with someone who says they can do that cut no problem. I'd rather not pay for someone to give it a go at and see what its like

It’s why I have had the same hairdresser for years!!! I have curly hair and trying to find someone that can do it. I had a lovely hairdresser for 12 years when she moved areas took a few awful haircuts to find another one to trust!! Been with this one for 14 years!!!

Lou98 · 08/04/2022 11:04

As an adult, I've had two hairdressers. The first I went to for 2 years, a lot of my family do too as she is brilliant.
She was in her 40's (just for context for those saying about age), always cut my hair in sections and it always looked brilliant. She would ask how you wanted it styled - I always had it bouncy with curls.

I only changed hairdressers at the time as I moved and she was just a bit too far but I was gutted to leave her. I've been going to my current hairdresser since and she is also amazing! She's late 20's and also always cuts my hair evenly, does the colour and style exactly as I ask

Years ago was going into the cafe at Galeries Layfayette in Paris and noticed the store hairdresser on the same floor. I got an appointment there and then and had the best pixie haircut I have ever had done by an elderly male hairdresser. I now understand how French women always look so good!

I now try to get my hair done whenever I am abroad and have to say that results are definitely much, much better than I have experienced here.

Chishnfips · 08/04/2022 12:12

@Imdoingitnext The Strand in Derby are excellent. As I mentioned in my previous post any of the stylists are great. Its just a shame I moved so far away now.

Greyhare · 08/04/2022 12:21

I love my hairdresser, she cuts my hair perfectly, I have a dry cut as my hair is fine and seems to work better if cut dry, I pay £15 for a 15 minute appointment, I found her after paying a lot of money to a posh salon for a w/c/b and came out with a terrible helmet of pouffy hair and discovered that I actually had two different hair cuts on each side of my head, one side was a good inch shorter that the other.

Imdoingitnext · 08/04/2022 13:07

Thank you @Chishnfips I'll check them out. Are they good with curly wavy hair? I hope you find someone else wheee you are now. Derby seems to have a dearth of good hairdressers doesn't it

NeedWineNow · 08/04/2022 13:37

Sorry but I'm not going to tell you all the name of my new hairdresser (especially if you are in West Kent) as she's really busy already and I don't want you all booking her up so that I can't get an appointment Wink

cannaethink · 08/04/2022 13:47

Mines great! I’ve got a shortish bob. She sections it and spends ages getting the ends super straight and blunt.
She’s got short hair herself which I think makes a difference.

KirstenBlest · 08/04/2022 19:06

No, it's not normal. The chap who cuts my hair is brilliant
My hair is wavy.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/04/2022 21:34

God, my hairdresser is amazing. I have a very blunt bob with an undercut and a curved fringe, and he cuts it so precisely. Plus he got me in on the first day after lockdown - I brought him a bottle of champagne!

I frequently have strangers ask who cuts it.

Blimeyherewegoagain · 08/04/2022 21:46

When we first moved to a new area I found my hairdresser by stopping a woman in the street to ask where she got her hair done. Through that salon I met my current hairdresser and have been with her for over 15 years.

SheSaysShush · 08/04/2022 21:46

Mine does. I go about every 8 weeks. It blow dries perfectly every time I wash it and I put it down to the way it's cut (short style)

whatever1980 · 08/04/2022 21:50

Same experience here. Spend 5 hours on a colour then 10'mins cutting. Comes out at £175. Had my haircut recently and it's not straight. A director cut it. Most of the hairdressers I see who I pay for seem to think they're amazing also.

I know someone who went to hairdressing college for 3 months then set up on their own charging quite a lot of money. Can't cut for toffee.

Real eye opener to me as I never really question how much experience my hairdresser has or where they trained despite shelling out close to £200 for them

Isabelle70 · 09/04/2022 10:37

My hairdresser is great I first saw her as she was an tutor for the student cut I was having done. I liked her so carried on with her. She left that salon after a couple of years and I didn't know where she had gone but a year later of a couple of dodgy cuts and I found her again :) I take my photos of what I like and what I don't like as I am rubbish at explaining. I am off to the hairdresser later but with another stylist as mine is on maternity leave, but I have my photos and what to ask for now.

KirstenBlest · 09/04/2022 13:33

I think you can set up as a hairdresser with no experience or training

Puppylucky · 09/04/2022 18:03

If we are giving recommendations can I give a shout out for Mark Anderson in SE London. He's an amazingly good technical cutter and a very nice man! His cuts take ages as he's so precise but they always fall beautifully and grow out well - and I have very difficult hair.

nellienolan · 09/04/2022 18:41

I've moved to a new town and have tried every salon. I really don't want to be ageist but I've found the younger stylists don't understand my thick, coarse, wavy hair although they do love to do a bouncy blow dry as it looks amazing - sadly it doesn't really suit my old face.

I thought I'd found someone, he's mid fifties and by his own admission can't do a proper curly blow dry, but I was impressed by the way he cut my hair the first time. Washed, dried then cut, the first time ever I'd come across a hairdresser who preferred to do a dry cut.

Unfortunately at my last appointment I asked him to cut in some subtle layers as I felt there was too much weight at the end of my shoulder length mop. It looked good at the time but now every time I look in the mirror all I can see is the cut lines across my hair and I can't get them to blend in smoothly. sigh

Back to the drawing board.

YouReallyAre · 09/04/2022 20:03

@ShowOfHands

I had no idea people were struggling so much. My hairdresser is 26yrs old (apparently age is important on a hairdresser thread), charges £28 for a wash and blow dry and is absolutely brilliant. She's always booked up well in advance, is recommended to everybody when they ask on social media and is confident cutting curly/short/long hair. I suspect she could move away from rural Norfolk and earn a fortune.
@ShowOfHands would you mind saying which village in rural Norfolk your hairdresser is please?
Horridcreature · 09/04/2022 20:16

I had a Brillo experience with getting my hair cut this morning. I don’t go to any particular stylist or even salon as I’ve been disappointed. I have no idea of age, younger than 40s.

Really listened and got how I feel about my disability and very few hairdressers do.

Horridcreature · 09/04/2022 20:16

Brillo - brilliant

PenguinLove1 · 09/04/2022 22:36

I agree that with the comments about hairdressers losing skills (or maybe just not learning them these days) as long hair has been the trend for so long - i have thick course hair in a pixie cut and lots of hairdressers do not seem able to do this cut, but can do balayage and extensions and a bouncy blow dry in their sleep. I do also feel less important to my hairdresser at times, she always seems to be running late, trying to move appts etc and im convinced that as im a short cut only she doesnt make as much money from my type of appt which is a bit sad really.

I did find someone good by instagram searching for a short hair specialist in my local city, she is young but very good - she is vidal sassoon trained but its hard to travel every month to see her. After lockdowns i tried a nice expensive salon and got the worst most uneven cut that I have ever had in my life- there is no way this person had cut short hair before it was shocking!

Imdoingitnext · 10/04/2022 16:23

I used to go to Vidal Sassoon's academy, back in the distant past when I had long wavy hair and I'd ask for a trim and they were reluctant to do it because it wasn't enough of a challenge to them.

Things seem have gone the opposite way nowadays where stylists seem to prefer to work on long hair and avoid working on the more challenging mid length and shorter hair. What does this say about the skill level of hair stylists and of hairdresser training?

Blossomtoes · 10/04/2022 17:14

Mine’s fabulous but it took a long time to find her. She’s Russian and cuts it wet, then dries it and finishes the cut off. I’ve got an asymmetric bob and it needs a precision cut so it’s a real test of cutting skills.
