Do any hairdresser cut hair properly?

I got my hair cut last week. I've long hair and she just brushed it and cut it. No sections, just one line of cutting. It's all uneven and looks like shite. Is this normal?

@NurseBernard

Yes. As a profession, hairdressers mostly seem to be shit at their job.

They cut hair, blow dry it straight and then finish the cut.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t want straightened hair. They just do this because they don’t know how to deal with any hair other than straight.

Confused

I went to a fairly new hairdresser who seems to only style the hair in ghd curls at the end of the appointment. Turns out she does this as she’s unable to cut in a straight line so the curls hide it, so many people have been complaining 🙈

I have thick wavy hair and have had constant difficulty finding good stylists. The one I have now is great, though. I found her by ruling out every single salon advertising glossy, straight hair, which narrowed it down a lot. It has a bit of an alternative vibe though I've noticed the rainbow hair customers have vanished, since the start of the pandemic.

lemongreentea · 08/04/2022 00:51

My hairdresser is amazing. Shes also s friend so I go round to hers for a cut or colour and I order in the takeway and make evening of it. She does listen to what I want though re my hair.

SquirrelG · 08/04/2022 01:05

You should see them panic when as a curly you tell them you don't want it straightened! They don't know what to do!

Mine doesn't panic - but then he's not a young thing who thinks curly hair is something to be got rid of!

Shock 😂

Sounds about right.

My hair dresser is great. She takes a lot of time over the cut and asks me how I want it finished - bouncy blow dry/curly etc. She’s expensive though! I’ve had bad experiences with hairdressers so when you find a good one you stick with them. I found this salon from local recommendations.

whoturnedthesunoff · 08/04/2022 07:09

I am very happy with my hairdresser but will admit that when I moved - 4 years ago - I tried to find someone local and after 3 attempts ( went to them all twice ) I now do a 100 mile round trip every 4 weeks back to my original salon as no one could control my thick wiry not curly but a few wavey cows licks mop

Would love to have long hair so I could leave it longer in between but as it's a short untidy pixie .. it needs every 4 weeks or I start to look like a mushroom

NeverTalksToStrangers · 08/04/2022 07:21

Agree with all the above. I regularly trawl the social media accounts of hairdressers trying (in vain) to find someone who isn't just posting photos of extremely long hair, often with extensions. I literally cannot wait for this over long hair trend to be over. Young girls/women are just clones of each other now.

ethelredonagoodday · 08/04/2022 07:46

My hairdresser is fantastic, BUT I've gone to the same person for 15 years and travel an hour to get to her!

lakeswimmer · 08/04/2022 07:54

I've also got a fantastic hairdresser who I've been going to ever since I moved to this area over 20 years ago.

My hair is really thick and I wear it short and never have it coloured and so it really is all about the cut. He listens to what I want and is really familiar with my hair and how to deal with it. He's the same age as me, early 50s, and I'm already concerned about who I'll go to when he retires Grin

Tenpintonpin · 08/04/2022 07:56

My theory is that over the last 10+ years the only sort of hair that's been fashionable is long, wavy and coloured, so many hairdressers are lacking experience / have lost the art of actually cutting hair. I've read a couple of articles recently about how 90s style short haircuts are due a come back, and I think a lot of hairdressers are going to have to get some serious training in if that actually happens (and I'll be in the queue to revive my Natalie Umbruglia cut just as soon as I find someone I trust).

LaNozzeDiFigaro · 08/04/2022 07:57

I really struggle. I've had the same hairstyle for the last twenty years and most mess up my sweeping fringe - I've been trying to grow it out for the last five years but I think they keep cutting it. The only hairdresser that spent loads of time cutting it did it too boxy. Another after fixed her work and took her time but yes, otherwise it's quick snip I could do myself.

Cutting isn't even the half of it. It's the dying. I had a really good hairdresser for full bleach (bad at cutting but worth it for the bleach) then I needed highlights instead for my poor scalp and I've been struggling to find the right one ever since. I don't know what's so impossible about a full head of highlights.

Be careful about asking for recommendations. I've had some people really highly recommended (by their family on a Facebook post and people who use them) but I've found them really really shit. My roots are huge right now because I just can't be arsed with it.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 08/04/2022 07:58

My mobile hairdresser is worth her weight in gold. She was the first person I welcomed back after lock down !

BruceAndNosh · 08/04/2022 08:02

The only way I found a decent hairdresser was by asking a stranger in M&S queue in front of me, "where do you get your hair cut?".

ladygindiva · 08/04/2022 08:05

I think I've hit the hairdresser lottery with mine compared to most. I have awkward wavy hair and she creates layers that make my hair behave and look good. Even the one occasion she gave me a Bob that was shorter than I wanted it drew a lot of praise for being a great cut. I always tip her well as she's not expensive either ( mobile hairdresser). She doesn't straighten mine or use heat at all except a drier and her products smell yummy.

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/04/2022 08:07

I love my hairdresser! She’s really good, very experienced and knowledgeable.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad cut with her.

borntobequiet · 08/04/2022 08:20

I had my hair cut more than six months ago and it’s kept its shape beautifully, I think because my hairdresser (who is not expensive) is good at cutting “with” the hair and finding its natural shape. I’d have it cut again but I like the longer length (and find it difficult to schedule an appointment).

Imdoingitnext · 08/04/2022 09:13

As someone growing a bad cut out - yet again! I envy those of you who've found a good cutter I'm still searching and it's a toss between new local ones a 100 mile return trip to a v good popular one

Does anyone know any good cutters in the Nottingham Derby Staffordshire area?

VerityPJohnson · 08/04/2022 09:21

A good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold. Mine isn’t great at colouring imo (I wouldn’t dare ask for bayalage) but very good at cutting and understanding your hair and face shape almost without you even realising what she is seeing. Coincidentally early fifties. Loads of good reviews online too, so not just me. I’ve trusted her with a lot of different styles and they’ve all worked and grown out well. I’ve also seen the cuts she’s done on people in the chair whilst I’m waiting.

I went to Charles Worthington in Covent Garden for a while and they weren’t a patch on her. I do think we tend to stay with the same person for years, out of loyalty or habit or fear, and oftentimes in the end, no matter what you ask for the cut is basically the same. So worth changing it up if not happy.

NeedWineNow · 08/04/2022 09:29

I've recently changed to a new hairdresser and she is fantastic. I had a really good cut the first time I went which lasted me through - all I had to do was rough dry and then run the straighteners over the top quickly rather than really faff about with a brush and then finish with straighteners as I had to do previously. As my hair only needs a wash once or maybe twice a week I'm fine with the limited straightener use.

We talked about colour and she made really good suggestions (for context, my hair is dyed blonde, but underneath the blonde I have uneven grey/salt and pepper colour and a dark patch right at the back). My previous hairdresser never addressed the patch or suggested options - just always went with the same root tint and then said 'it's funny this dark patch isn't it?' When I asked what she would suggest she said there was nothing really we could do, and anyway 'your hair's funny isn't it'.

My new hairdresser on the other hand suggested options and we agreed what she would do. It cost me an arm and a leg (thank god for a day's overtime!) but I am really pleased with it, and it will be easier to maintain going forward.

actiongirl1978 · 08/04/2022 09:32

It takes my hairdresser about 5 mins to cut my hair to such utter perfection I'd follow him to another country. Its taken 6 hairdressers to find him though.

I have straight hair and I lost count of the number of wonky cuts I got.

Hohoholymoley · 08/04/2022 09:37

I'm going to ask the next stranger I see with a good cut for theirs.

ShowOfHands · 08/04/2022 09:40

I had no idea people were struggling so much. My hairdresser is 26yrs old (apparently age is important on a hairdresser thread), charges £28 for a wash and blow dry and is absolutely brilliant. She's always booked up well in advance, is recommended to everybody when they ask on social media and is confident cutting curly/short/long hair. I suspect she could move away from rural Norfolk and earn a fortune.

Chananigan · 08/04/2022 10:23

Can we not have a recommendation thread on here for hairdressers? I.e. An ongoing thread listing towns with good hairdressers on the first post? I absolutely do not trust searching local Facebook for recommendations as invariably they're all touting for business and I've fallen foul of that one a few times!

ginghamstarfish · 08/04/2022 10:29

Yes, have NEVER had a good experience at a hairdressers, in this country or abroad. After many bad experiences and lots of money thrown away, I learned how to cut my own from Youtube videos, and would never go back.
