What shoes with 'Mom jeans'

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2022 09:11

Having overcome my antipathy for the term 'mom Jean', tried some (M&S, 12S) and discovered they are a perfect fit for a short pear shaped person (no baggy waist! No tight thighs!), I've bought a couple of pairs (black and blue, washed but not distressed). But now I'm not sure I've any shoes that will look right with them, other than summer flip flops.

The photos on the website look like mostly canvas low tops or Birkenstock type sandals... which I don't have and aren't great for rainy weather.

I have a bit of a problem finding shoes as my feet are quite wide and one of my toe joints is enlarged (bad idea to drop a boat on it). So I can't really buy online. I had a quick look in M&S and clarks (the only shops available in the out of town site I was at) and didn't spot anything that looked right.

Any ideas please?

Please, pleeeeease don't wear Mum jeans! Just don't! I promise you'll cringe in 10 years time

But that's how fashion works. You'll cringe about anything you wore 10 years ago. I cringe when I look at photos of myself in skinny jeans now.
tiredmummy198 · 07/04/2022 09:26

I wear mine with trainers (I wear mine with vans).

They are hard to wear in winter as I don't think they go with boots as well as skinny jeans do.

I'm the same as you, short and pear shaped and I think they suit me. Next also do a high waist straight jean which are really nice

Crayfishforyou · 07/04/2022 09:37

I wear plimsoll type trainers or DMs.
Unless you want to look like a mom in the 80s steer clear of ballet flats and loafers.
I’m an hourglass and mom jeans really suit me, I love them.

Luckyelephant1 · 07/04/2022 09:39

White trainers, whatever type you like.

MoreThanRubies · 07/04/2022 10:05

I love M&S Mom jeans, they’re a fab fit on the waist. Only problem is the cold ankle thing. On colder or wet days I wear them slightly rolled up, with chunky ankle/low calf boots that come up to the hem. Long (knee length) socks underneath to avoid any chilly leg flashes. Toasty and practical.

Then sandals or low converse in the summer.

jowly · 07/04/2022 10:06

They were made for me. Thighs disproportionately large compared to my waist. I hope they stay longer than skinnies which are a complete disaster for me

To answer the question... trainers or loafers.

Ha, I'm 61. I cringe at some of the clothes I wore in the 70s and 80s. I still wear some items from the 90s and later!Grin

Seriously, I don't think I'm going to cringe at jeans actually designed specifically for a particular real womens body type!

White trainers/vans/converse

I don't know why but think they look better with white shoes on me

If the OP feels good in them she should wear them
ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2022 10:14

My trainers at the moment are more trail shoes for walking miles in rather than stylish.
I was thinking loafers of some sort - I'd have thought 'boat shoe' style would be perfect, but I haven't seen anything I like the look of. Silly tassels or blingy metalwork, ugh.

Supergas...white-don't get sodding glittery ones or whatever other abominations they have come up with. They come out quite wide too which I think you said you needed

But skinny jeans are not out of fashion, how how could this possibly be the case? manical tinkly laugh

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 07/04/2022 11:11

Deffo white trainers, converse or air forces or something

Xiaoxiong · 07/04/2022 11:32

Check out Timberland boat shoes - no frills and last forever.

I also have just got some lovely canvas espadrille flats from H&M which could fit your brief.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/04/2022 11:56

The weather will warm up in a minute OP and it will be less difficult. I find they look best with chunkier less delicate sandals. Birkenstock or chunky leather types.

Out of season I roll up and wear black leather biker boot or trainers. Both look fine and needs must when it's wet.

Pinktruffle · 07/04/2022 12:39

I wear mine with Adidas Hu trainers or Black Timberland slims

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2022 13:59

The timberland boat shoes look great... their store finder suggests I'd have to go to the 'big city', none showing in my nearby one. Is somewhere like Office likely to stock them do you think? (Im a bit pushed for time before a holiday soon)

White trainers and canvas shoes look lovely... when they're new.

Just come on to say-why shouldn't OP wear mom jeans?! I still wear skinny jeans, why shouldn't I? I wear them as I would wear leggings (I don't wear leggings), with trainers, and they're comfortable and flattering.

Snozwanger · 07/04/2022 14:11

I have some straight leg jeans but put them away in winter as I couldn't work out what to wear them with and didn't want cold ankles. When it's warmer I'll wear them with white or blue Converse but I think as other posters have said, any white trainer is your best bet. I found Supergas too big on my feet so find some that suit you. M&S had a few nice pairs of trainers when I looked recently.

jowly · 07/04/2022 15:17

@ErrolTheDragon there's some on Amazon, and you could look at Hush Puppies too (so comfortable)

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/04/2022 15:23

I’m a total stereotype and wear them with my Vejas

I second Supergas, I had a white platform pair last spring/summer that looked pretty good with rolled up mom jeans. For winter or colder/wetter weather, wear with Doc Martens or similar style chunky, ideally platform style ankle boots. The shoes and the tops/sweaters for that matter absolutely have to be of the moment, if you wear trail runners or similar or a boring fitted t-shirt you will look like a mom from the 80s, not a good look.
Floisme · 07/04/2022 15:46

Cringing at what you wore 10 years ago is the best part of fashion and I pity anyone who has never done it. It has given me endless laughs and enjoyment and hopefully always will.

Agree that plimsolls and dm type boots look great. I turn up the cuffs of my mom jeans when I wear them with boots. I am a big fan of mom jeans with loafers though! You definitely look like an 80s mum, but a very stylish one!
