Just so, so fed up of myself.

This feels like giant first world problem I know. I usually don't get too hard on myself but today I've just had enough.
Everything I buy, no matter what I spend, looks completely shit, dishevelled, like I make clothes look LESS expensive than they are. I'm not untidy, and I take care of my appearance, but it's like I was blessed by the shit fairy and I manage to make lovely fabrics and designs look dreadful.

I'm starting to wonder whether I'm just not suited to modern clothes, or if I am going a bit mad and judging too harshly. I told Dp and he said I always look fantastic (his words were 'beautiful' as always, bless him) but he doesn't have an eye for stuff like that. If I asked him what he loves me in most he'd say leggings, which I only wear to clean up Grin

The odd bit is that my 'credentials' look good on paper - I am mid forties, very slim, blonde, considered attractive and have great (if pale) skin. I have good nails, feet, everything in proportion and look a good bit younger than I am. And I feel like something a cat dragged in.
My hair is a bit fuzzy, neither straight nor curled. It is longish and I wear it slightly wavy, centre part, but it always looks like shit because the ends are a bit straggly. I always feel like the weirdo, and that I make clothes look terrible.

I like a delicate, muted style, slightly bohemian (floaty 90's slip dresses, etc) but not zany or colourful. I like soft knits in good fabrics, decent dresses, clumpy boots. I have some gorgeous long wool coats, great accessories and make up (minimal). But what happens when I wear my stuff is not making sense. If I wear dark colours I always look tired or pale, or ill when I am not. The only colour that lights my face up seems to be beige or white but surely this can't be right?
I make everything look untidy, or maybe everything is a bad fit? Maybe I'm not too good at choosing the right fit? I am small framed but don't want anything too fitted or structured, but everything I buy, no matter how gorgeous I think it is, I just feel that I look badly dressed. Considering how carefully chosen and occasionally expensive my things are, it feels soul destroying to see them on me in the mirror.

I'm 47 and look best in mini skirts Confused, delicate short tea dresses, fine knits and feminine stuff, but I don't want to dress like that now! I feel that most things aimed at my age range just bury me or make me look scruffy and ill.
Today, out of some sort of furious curiosity, I tried a v.short green floral tea dress on in New Look (possibly aimed at teens). I hate that store and never go in there, the damn thing was polyester and thin, just horribly made. I looked like a million dollars in it, my eyes lit up, my hair shone and my figure looked fab.
WTF am I doing wrong?
I have gorgeous stuff from Brora, Toast, Poetry, tweed, wool, cashmere, and it all looks like utter crap on me :(

I am so fed up of what I have spent and would like some advice if anyone has the time. I just feel like giving up and not buying anything anymore. I can't trust myself obviously.
Has anyone ever felt like this? Is there a solution, or am I seeing myself in a negative light? I am happy generally and not usually down on myself, but clothes really don't seem to like me.

Also, you could try posting a picture of an outfit, everything put together, that you think doesn't work on you (with face obscured), and we will try to see if it's a cut, length, width, fit, a combination of factors, or that you are actually looking gorgeous and can't see it

@TosstTastic

The Toast thing is interesting, years ago, probably a decade, they had a few seasons of stunning clothes. Very Helena B-C.

Fitted, shirts & t-shirts (not Breton) maybe a waistcoat.
Narrow skirts, wide legged trousers,
Promanade, single button, simple coats, v neck.
Long dresses, fitted at the waist, v neck

Brogues or Blundestones....

And I think that's what a lot of us carry the toast desire baggage around from. I want to look like I could be drinking coffee in a heavily tiled, Art Nouveau Cafe.

I've just returned a tunic type top, almost a copy of an old design. You'd wear it over a fitted sleeve fine knit. The new version had fixed sleeves, no button. The new version didn't have the folded centre placket which previously made it quirky shapeless rather than boxy shapeless.

I found an old catalogue on Pinterest, honestly I could have bought the whole season but that is not what they are offering today.

Oh I remember the older Toast stuff. I had some lovely knits and the winter coats were a dream. Something definitely changed, and with Margaret Howell too.

This dress for instance (brown pic), I'm sure it's impeccably constructed by it looks like a school caretaker's coat, maybe Mr Griffiths from Grange Hill. Whatever happened to the M Howell in my second pic (black dress)? I adored that one!

Just so, so fed up of myself.

I feel you OP. Ten years older and with the time and money to shop but .... Aaargh.

I will say Toast/Cos etc now appear to require one to be Ezra Miller's basketball-playing sister - coat hanger figure and the sharpest jaw and cheekbones ever.

Whose hair would you like? I have fairly "British" hair (naturally wavy, now quite grey and sadly averse to being in graceful locks rather than clumps of mixed straw and fluff). I have been experimenting with "Plex" bond restoring stuff, all manner of of conditioners, styling creams, heat protection stuff, serums and oils, and it is trial and error but has helped.

I do still shop at New Look as some stuff is well made and suits me, but I agree so much about the sea of polyester EVERYWHERE.

Are you looking for "philosophical" cuts, colours and fabrics, but ones that suit you? Hobbs stuff (used to be, anyway) well made; I wonder if you wade through their stuff you might find a few clothes that are tweed or linen (etc), interesting cuts, not obviously "this season and no other", which suit you and could fit into a "cousin of Toast" aesthetic which feels "you" but also makes the mirror your friend? Even M&S have some linen stuff with ethnic prints this season.

Anyway DON'T LOSE HOPE - progress is possible!

OP, scroll through the dresses at this link and see if anything looks like it could work. Loads won't be right, of course, but it is a selection of brands outside the typical UK high street, so an easy way to see some different stuff:

www.trouva.com/category/womens/womenswear/dresses

(I too remember very fondly the good years of Toast!)

BlessedByTheShitFairy · 06/04/2022 17:35

@whenwilliwillibefamous Not sure what hair I'd like, possibly a thicker less fuzzy version of my own. I don't think philosophical is my style, but I like the idea of fluid silky things that wouldn't be out of place at an artists' get together in the alternative 1920's! Slightly alternative but streamlined.

@Innocenta Will do, thank you. I have just found a site called Aspiga, has some lovely sustainable cotton dresses with more shape to them, worth a look for anyone who is tired of oversized stuff but still want contemporary summer clothes in natural fabrics!

....

And on the subject of Baukjen, I'm just not getting it at all.
Most of the stuff is identical to everywhere else, in eco vero, unlined and pushing £170 for the pleasure, gggrrrrrr.

Some more thoughts, quite varied ones!

www.cyrillus.com/en/women.htm?intcmpid=Categoriesfemme

en.sessun.com/catalogue/dresses.html

(If you stick to the more slim cut ones, ignoring oversized)

www.freepeople.com/uk/blouses/

Free People is bonkers and has a lot of 'trendy' stuff to dig through, but does have some absolutely gorgeous pieces from time to time that can answer one's hankering for boho. It depends how willing to dig you are! If you can't face all the trend stuff that is totally understandable. I like them for layering pieces like overshirts, and nice tops in general.

Innocenta · 06/04/2022 17:42

Aspiga is gorgeous! I can really see some of those on you.

Imabouttoexplode · 06/04/2022 18:18

Oliver Bonas for clothes would suit you well I think and Swedish Hasbeen for shoes.

BlessedByTheShitFairy · 06/04/2022 23:57

Thank you, will have a google! x

Hmme I think quite a few of Aspiga's offerings will be too floaty/too much fabric...
Did you try a 30 inch bra (maybe D cup)?
I had a quick look at great plains, quite a few of their sale dresses might suit you? Could you order a bunch and see what works? You have fine hair, find a hairdresser that can work with it (I liked the messy bun look btw)...

JMAngel1 · 07/04/2022 17:26

I feel like this re cheaper clothes - they just suit and fit me better but I eel that I should be wearing more expensive “classy” clothes at the ripe old age of 49! I’m size 6-8 though and 5ft 3 so the odd time I’ve ordered nicer clothes, I just look ridiculous.
So I took the Kibbe test (I came out Soft Dramatic which I LOVE) and stick to more fitted silhouettes but with draping and ruching / this way they don’t look dated in a body con way. Plus it saves me a fortune in clothes and now I genuinely love all my outfits. Definitely do Kibbe and don’t be embarrassed to shop at New Look - I hope you bought the green dress Grin

I don't think Priti Patel is too far behind either, imo.
Some of the conservative party views regarding misogyny and rape are appalling.

I think the Pinterest pics you posted- all of those women don’t look great in those clothes. The tea dress is lovely, I can see why you’d look great in it.
I don’t have any suggestions other than wear what you think suits you.
