How did I survive without Vinted in my life!?

Very late to the game, but it's bloody wonderful - a Baukjen top for £4, a pure silk Whistles dress for £35, an Esprit top for £1.50, all in excellent condition. Just fantastic!

@Darklane

It sounds far better for the buyer than the seller. You have to trust that the buyer will actually pay as NancyPickford said plus from the sounds of the really cheap prices paid for new or nearly new quality items hardly seems worth it from the sellers point.
That’s not how it works at all. The buyer pays at the point of purchase, and it gets “held”. Once the buyer confirms receipt of the items, the money is released to the seller. It’s perfectly safe

I still sell on eBay but I think the fees are expensive now

stodgystollen · 04/04/2022 17:12

I find it's good if you've got particular brands in mind and are prepared to risk a fairly large amount of money e.g. £20 for a Ted Baker men's shirt. I wouldn't buy unknown brands on it, and it's not much good if you're on a really tight budget and looking for super cheap items. I haven't dared spend large amounts on coats or bags yet

MermaidEyes · 04/04/2022 17:12

Where have old ebayers gone?

I sold for years on ebay, mainly kids branded clothes, but I would also sell some of my stuff, books, toys etc while I was there. Kids are now growing up so I don't have their clothes to sell anymore, and the ridiculously steep ebay/PayPal fees just aren't worth the time and hassle of taking photos, listing, packaging and taking trips to the post office.

@CornishGem1975

I just don't get it - people keep recommending it to me and telling me they find great stuff but every time I go on it looks like tat! Am I searching wrong?
Same.

I've bought maybe seven things on there now and every single one has been a let down.

One person didn't put the correct postage and it ended up costing me a lot more in post office fees. I've bought something listed as brand new without tags and it's arrived stained and very obv worn.

I have a friend who absolutely loves it though and she's got some lovely bits, she's had one bad experience with being sent knock offs and took ages to get her money back but most of her stuff has been lovely and as described.

EllaPaella · 04/04/2022 17:19

I do love Vinted but see it more of a clothes swap really as prices are so low you certainly don't make much money. If I was selling really high end items I would probably sell via Ebay rather than Vinted.

McFuckSake · 04/04/2022 17:20

@picklemewalnuts

Has it taken over from eBay, for second hand clothes? People used to rave about eBay but there was nothing when I started looking.
It very much reminds me of eBay. It's not just clothes on vinted too, art supplies, egg cups, vases etc are all on vinted too.
GloriaSilver · 04/04/2022 17:25

I absolutely love it. I have sold loads on there and bought a few bits, all have been fine. A Levi skirt for £10, blazer for £5

AHungryCaterpillar · 04/04/2022 17:27

I’ve just discovered it as well! I can’t believe how cheap stuff is and really good stuff I don’t usually buy second hand but will start now

JudgeRindersMinder · 04/04/2022 17:28

I’m loving it. I’m on a significant weight loss journey (following surgery for it) so am going down sizes quickly, and obviously don’t want to splash out on a whole new wardrobe every couple of months!

LegMeChicken · 04/04/2022 17:47

Same!
All my purchases this year been from there and loving it.
I'm also a small size so lots of gorgeous stuff from people who don't fit anymore

LegMeChicken · 04/04/2022 17:49

I've never been able to find decent secondhand stuff on ebay (started about 5 years ago). Everyone seems to be a trade seller.

Gumtree, FB Marketplace, Nextdoor and specialist apps (like Vinted) are what I use

Fortyseven007 · 04/04/2022 18:04

Yes, it’s cheaper to buy but lately the items I bought were in terrible state.
I bought an Cath Kidston bag which was to be newish ( used once) and it smelled so badly like mold.
I accepted it as OK, was hoping that would get washed off but it didn’t and the whole house started smelling cos of that.
In the end I binned it, wasted £12 plus postage.
Also bough a Topshop jeans for £10 as excellent condition but had a hole in the crotch. Immediately contacted the seller, she said she didn’t notice and asked me to return to her but I had to pay return postage of £3.20.
What’s the point really, faulty item and I still had to pay for return.
In the end two weeks later I got money back.
On eBay I would just open case as faulty ..

AHungryCaterpillar · 04/04/2022 18:09

Are the items on there always available as I’ve noticed some listed a month ago? Don’t want to buy something to be told it’s been sold on another site?

PatchworkElmer · 04/04/2022 18:14

It’s great, I’ve just updated my entire work wardrobe for the price I would’ve spent on a dress and blouse brand new. I’ve got 4 dresses, a blazer, 2 blouses and probably some other bits I’ve forgotten. Top buys are immaculate Hobbs and Jaeger dresses for £10 each.

I've bought a few things that have been listed months ago, think the most was 8 months
EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 04/04/2022 19:20

You could message the seller first though and ask I've they still have it

AHungryCaterpillar · 04/04/2022 19:27

Yeah I think I will message as I’ve noticed more things listed a year ago!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 04/04/2022 19:34

I've just checked and the dress that has been posted out to me today was uploaded 20 months ago! That's got to be the longest but I'm going back through now to check Grin

AHungryCaterpillar · 04/04/2022 19:46

Wow! I can’t believe the prices tbh I’ve seen thing that was sold on eBay for double/triple the price

MrsSpooner · 04/04/2022 20:09

I love Vinted.

Have bought & sold hundreds of items.

Most of the stuff I have bought I have been pleased with. Had a couple of things that were not quite as good condition as described but that’s the risk I guess.

Also had one buyer who complained about some non-existent “damage” to a perfect item she got for a ridiculously cheap price!

My observations:

  • if something has been listed ages message the seller to check they are still “active”
  • I never spend more than £20 as not sure I trust the “buyer protection”
  • see it as a swap shop - sell for cheap but buy for cheap with your profits
  • the good stuff gets snapped up instantly so keep checking for stuff you’re after
  • most people accept (reasonable) offers
  • the bundle feature is great - especially for kids stuff I look for sellers I can buy multiple items from to save on postage / admin
  • search for specific brands / sizes / key words rather than browsing

I can’t be bothered with eBay now, too much hassle to list and the fees are too much & too complicated.
Also as a buyer eBay is too difficult to search as too many business sellers selling tat

ArabeI · 04/04/2022 20:25

I'd forgotten about the time. I wonder if Vinted remind sellers if it's been listed a long time.

That was one of my negative experiences, when new. I purchased a 'new with tags' cardigan, but it had clearly been worn in the interim and was quite bobbled. I realised, on checking, that it had been listed seven months previously.

mewkins · 04/04/2022 20:28

I've had some great success. I've bought some dresses (casual and work) and a couple of jackets and ankle boots. All in great condition although some things took ages to arrive. One seller totally ignore me and I eventually got my money back.

IheartJKRowling · 04/04/2022 20:43

I've had some amazing stuff from Vinted. I bought a Max Mara coat in perfect condition for £60, a new with tags ghost floral tea dress for £15 and my absolute favourite Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche silk dress that was from his 1981 catwalk show for £45. The same dress is on sale on a specialist vintage fashion site for £1000 😳

Like any selling platform there is a lot of rubbish so I have saved searches for certain designers or fabrics silk, linen etc. I have upgraded my whole wardrobe. I have had some bad experiences where sellers haven't posted items, the items have been in terrible condition or I received the wrong thing but generally it's much better than Ebay for most things.
