Does anyone else actually love the 70s/90s and Y2K styles?

I'm not keen on fast fashion, so I'm reluctant to go out and buy the colourful mesh crop tops, platform sandals, lilac cargo troursers etc. HOWEVER I really enjoy browsing and seeing all these groovy styles back in fashion again! I'd happily wear this stuff if I didn't feel that it would be a waste when it goes out of fashion again. Any MNers wearing this stuff or are we all too old to be wearing this style a second or third time? Grin

I'm living vicariously through my tweenage daughter! She'd had a growth spurt, so I took her shopping and she choose baggy jeans, fuzzy lilac and blue slightly short jumpers with swirly patterns, a cropped baby blue hoodie, and some big flat barettes. Great fun.
My own late-90s "fashion" was indie-kid, baby tees and bootcuts, barettes, velvet jackets, feather boas, plastic toy-shop jewellery, lots of polyester mesh...
I am enjoying a slightly different silhouette getting back into workwear after lockdown though - looser but still tailored trousers, shorter and tighter jumpers, clumpier shoes and trainers. It's all going a bit "Friends".

yes

70s fan here - I'm wearing orange and black patterned flares with an orange cashmere jumper today.

IvorCutler · 16/03/2022 17:22

I really like it too but sadly feel too old (38), for the 90s and 00s anyway. 70s is ok because I didn’t wear it the first time round 😊

I’m a big believer that anyone of any age should wear whatever the hell they want and I love seeing people express themselves with fashion, just a weird self imposed rule.

evilharpy · 16/03/2022 17:31

I hoped to never see low rise jeans again. But there are definitely some 90s things I could get on board with again even though I wore them first time around. I miss the 90s and wish I could go back, this is as close as I'm going to get Grin

I'm enjoying the early-mid 90s revival, because even though I was a tween / young teen then, I was too much of a clueless bumpkin to be into fashion (and I had no money to spend on clothes anyway). The closest I got to the zeitgeist was a grungy flannel shirt in 1994.

My fashion icon at the moment is Elaine Benes from Seinfeld. I wish I could get away with decorating my house like her apartment too.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/03/2022 17:48

I like it but it feels odd to be wearing some of the stuff that I wore when I was 19/20 and I’m now 41! I feel like I’m dressing up in my teenagers clothes. Not a bad thing I guess!

Aworldofmyown · 16/03/2022 17:50

I'm loving it and also enjoying kitting my 13-year-old daughter out!!
The bravest I've been is some wide leg jeans!

Aworldofmyown · 16/03/2022 17:52

Although Y2k fashion can stay there, all that diamanté, low trousers, pointy boots, etc
Oh, and the thongs poking out the top of jeans 🤭

WandaThePanda · 16/03/2022 21:44

90s yes, but Y2K was an absolute shit show!

Laiste · 16/03/2022 22:45

Late 90s suited my shape perfectly.

Mind you my shape was better in the late 90s ...

Crimeismymiddlename · 16/03/2022 22:59

Loving it, have now got some flared trousers for work. Will leave the tiny dresses and tops for the young people. Love the look of the low riser, unfortunately the high wasters are staying for now-my torso could not take it this time
round.

My dream job is working for J Peterman

Yes! My god that would be the perfect job.

RayonSunrise · 17/03/2022 08:27

I am loving the revival, and especially loving that this time round the high waists are kinder to my no-longer-90s-shape. Grin

Today I am wearing flared black tailored trousers with converse and a sleeveless jumper over a shirt. I am pretty sure I wore pretty much exactly this sort of combo in my first "professional" job.

VerityPJohnson · 17/03/2022 08:57

I’m liking the low rises that are slightly sneaking back in, but in the main I find the current fashions very unflattering on me and don’t much like the looks either - I think it means I am now very old as I prefer things which suit and flatter me over looking current.

DuckyNoMates · 17/03/2022 12:23

I'm waiting for cargo pants to be back in

evilharpy · 17/03/2022 13:09

My thighs are wide enough without the extra width of cargo pockets! I did love All Saints back in the day though.

I'm still wearing mine although wish I could find some new pairs. Keep trawling the charity shops.
I love 90s fashion, takes me right back! Although I'll only wear so much of it now - love high waisted jeans, cardis as tops, anything mesh (but with more than just a bra underneath 😁), knitted tanks, fuzzy mohair. I'll leave the Spice Girls platforms and crop tops to my teens. Over the years I've saved so many of my clothes but kicking myself I got rid of all the 90s stuff.

Have you been going through my Y2K photo album? 😁

FayCarew · 17/03/2022 14:01

Cargo pants are back in.

I've still got my 90s and 2000s clothes.and wear them when I feel like it. Sadly some of the 1990s clothes are a bit too snug around the waist these days. I haven't put on weight but I'm not quite the shape I was then.

Clothes sizing has also changed

Craftycorvid · 17/03/2022 19:09

From my casual observation of what ‘the young people’ are wearing, pretty much anything seems to go. I was browsing a vintage shop today next to striplings and people my age all dressed similarly to me; and I like that we’ve largely dispensed with nonsense about ‘age appropriate’ clothes. Today, I cheered myself up with a 70s dress in a cheerful spring green with a floral pattern. I also browsed 90s dungarees and 60s tweed coats. We used to mix up styles like this in the 80s! It was great.

IvorCutler · 17/03/2022 19:24

Cargo pants are definitely back in and personally I find the pockets to be quite flattering to larger thighs! Depending on the style.

XingMing · 17/03/2022 20:10

I bought pink cargo pants in a provincial M&S two years ago. I think we can take it as official that the 90s have returned.

Yay! Pockets!
