Can I wear this to a wedding!

Kittykatmacbill · 12/03/2022 22:13

Hey there,

Having spent the last two years in jeans and running gear, I have totally lost the ability to dress myself!

Can I wear this to a wedding? www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/kitty-midi-shirt-dress-ivory-lemon-fizz/sty-w0705-ltu?cat=C1_S2_G4

About the wedding - Extended family, will be child rangling, catholic cathedral then lux (maybe slightly ostentatious?) hotel for reception.

Would plan to wear with wedges and realistically accessorise with huge bag full of kids stuff…

I think it's gorgeous and definitely smart enough, having been around posh Catholics a lot.

Karmakamelion · 27/03/2022 19:39

No. It makes the model look "hippy" as in pear-shaped . Not flattering

NickyT64 · 27/03/2022 21:31

As an ex-Personal Shopper (well known ex-department store/redundant) I would say that the dress is beautiful and the colours are crying out for some fabulous accessorising but a shirt dress style is generally a bit casual and cotton is a bit informal. To me this is Summer Garden Party/Fabulous Summer Wedding. Having said that I’m wondering how the rules of occasion wear have been affected by the last two years. It will either mean that people will go completely over the top or just the fact you’re not in loungewear will be fantastic and appreciated.

mathanxiety · 27/03/2022 22:26

From my observation of two weddings in the last six months, people are relishing the chance to dress up.

I haven't seen anything over the top, but people are really enjoying their evening wear.

CambsAlways · 27/03/2022 23:00

No, I wouldn’t wear it, I think it’s too busy! And too casual,

Elfblossom · 28/03/2022 08:53

1, IT HAS POCKETS

2, These threads really show us just how many people here can wear an £120 dress 'for the school run' ...

3, If you like it, if you try it on and feel amazing, if you will enjoy wearing it on the day & not care what anyone else is wearing ... buy the dress!

There's still too many people in the world caring too much about 'look' and not enough about 'feel'.

TizerorFizz · 28/03/2022 09:46

It’s fine for a wedding. If you wore a neutral straw hat with it, it would elevate it beyond being a shirt dress. I wouldn’t choose wedges as they are casual. Try mid heels in a colour from the dress.

I don’t like the idea of a big bag. I would take a smaller rafia bag snd get DH/partner to take the big bag! Or if you must have a big bag, get the large Loewe woven bag. You will love that forever!!

Cotton won’t matter. Who will know? A waisted dress is fine. Wear decent earrings and good make up and you will look great.

TizerorFizz · 28/03/2022 09:47

The only occasion where this dress wouldn’t be great was for a posh wedding where it was black tie.

ferretface · 28/03/2022 10:41

It's totally fine for a wedding, unless it is a full on white tie affair!

Wedding attire doesn't have to mean "glam" it can just mean happy, celebratory clothes which this is. Like, I wouldn't style it with trainers for a wedding but it would be just as fine with wedges as with a more formal style, wedges will give a summer garden party vibe, sandals etc will elevate it slightly.

LittleGwyneth · 28/03/2022 12:21

I think fine as long as you're planning to wear heels. I'd do a headband as well (or a hat, though I find most hats deeply unappealing).

I'm sorry lots of people have been rude about it. It's certainly much better than some of the polyblend monstrosities I've seen people suggesting for weddings on here.

TizerorFizz · 28/03/2022 15:15

@LittleGwyneth
I really do agree. There are plenty of saucer hats that sit on a band that elevate a dress. I also agree that the decorative headbands you can get now are great too. Lots of chic options to choose from.

waltzingparrot · 28/03/2022 18:04

I'd pull out the turquoise blue for accessories and get suede heeled slingbacks and clutch bag.

EthelMerman · 31/03/2022 08:05

@MyAnacondaMight

Nothing to stop you wearing shoes or a bag you already have, provided they’re vaguely smart. It doesn’t have to be heels and a silly satin clutch bag - but it probably should be a smarter look than Kirsty Allsopp at the school fete.

www.johnlewis.com/hobbs-rhea-broderie-anglaise-cotton-dress-cobalt-blue/p6057889 This is an example of something fractionally smarter and more appropriate, while also being cotton, very wearable, and could be worn with smart flats just fine.

IMO this lacy number is hideous and you should go for the Boden dress and accessorise.

Do what you feel is right for you, you’ll never please everyone and the opinions are mixed. Really no point in buying something you’re never going to wear again.

MimosaFields · 31/03/2022 08:35

I find it too casual. The same shape in a less busy pattern would be ideal. Personally I think that pattern cheapens the dress

RunnerDown · 31/03/2022 09:48

None of the dresses shown on the thread would be my taste. I think the first one posted by the op is fine for a wedding.
I do wonder why people can’t just comment that they don’t personally like the style of something without resorting to bitchy insults about what someone else has taken the time to post .

TizerorFizz · 31/03/2022 15:14

I think Catholic makes no difference at all. The Hobbs dress is certainly possible but they discount all the time, so don’t pay full price. Personally I think the OPs choice gives more opportunities re accessories.

I would also look at some of the wonderful trouser suits around at the moment.

learieonthewildmoor · 31/03/2022 16:01

If you are looking for other dresses for apple shaped short arses

I am an apple shaped short arse and this dress looks beautiful on me.

MrsBerthaRochester · 31/03/2022 16:13

I still think the Boden dress is the best choice and I really dont like Boden! Will be buying it myself if it goes in the sale.

RuthW · 31/03/2022 17:44

Perfect for a wedding with fascinator and buttonhole

TizerorFizz · 31/03/2022 17:57

Don’t wear a fascinating. Must be a decent headband now. Ditch the feathers. Or buy a hat - either a pill box or one one a headband.

TizerorFizz · 31/03/2022 17:57

Aaah! Fascinator.

h2obaby · 03/04/2022 19:27

I think it would be perfect for a wedding, the most important thing is that you love it and feel comfortable. Everyone has such different opinions on what to wear for different occasions.

HowFascinating · 12/04/2022 18:58

Agree with @KimikosNightmare's posts. It's charming dress, very suitable.
Personally , I find the other suggestions really 'off' but taste is very individual.
Yes to the Boden dress and follow @Pinkcadillac's styling advice.

niugboo · 12/04/2022 19:27

Sorry no. I actually went out with a friend for afternoon tea yesterday and she was wearing that dress. It’s great, fun but definitely more PTA mum than wedding.

NanaRant · 12/04/2022 19:47

Far too casual, sorry OP. You've mentioned kilts - is this a Scottish Wedding? People tend to get very dressed up for formal weddings in Scotland. If you splash out on something you would not wear again, you could put it up on e-bay as "current season". You'll be amazed at what you can get back from wedding outfits.
