Can I wear this to a wedding!

Hey there,

Having spent the last two years in jeans and running gear, I have totally lost the ability to dress myself!

Can I wear this to a wedding? www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/kitty-midi-shirt-dress-ivory-lemon-fizz/sty-w0705-ltu?cat=C1_S2_G4

About the wedding - Extended family, will be child rangling, catholic cathedral then lux (maybe slightly ostentatious?) hotel for reception.

Would plan to wear with wedges and realistically accessorise with huge bag full of kids stuff…

No. That's a great dress for a mid summer lunch date.

Doona · 13/03/2022 04:50

No

Lemonlemon88 · 13/03/2022 04:57

I think it’s lovely dress but not right for that type of wedding.

1frenchfoodie · 13/03/2022 09:10

I think it looks lovely, really happy. People may go more formal clothes for cathedral/lux hotel but only you know a) how far your extended family would go in that direction and b) how you’d feel in a dress you liked but was at the casual end of the guests’ range.

implantreplace · 13/03/2022 09:10

It’s an acquired taste

But I really like it!!!

yesterdayisgone · 13/03/2022 09:12

As a previous poster said it’s very Kirsty allsop . Not a fan of it .

parabalabalabala · 13/03/2022 09:15

I'm surprised at how much I love it! If the wedding is really posh then absolutely go for a lovely hat / fascinator preferably in orange and some fancy shoes. But surely the perfect dress is one like this that you can fancy up for a wedding then wear with trainers on the school run the following week? SmileGrin

@CoffeeBeansGalore

This with a nice jacket would still be practical but far more elegant. Similar price range.
This is lovely, looks flattering and far more appropriate for the type of wedding you are attending- but YOU need to feel comfortable.

Invest in structured underwear to ensure a smooth line and good boob line and almost any dress will look great.

Each to their own, but that is hideous- it's a sort of lusty barmaid in a Carry on Film vibe

It's also not a dress you would wear a jacket with. The bows on the sleeve wouldn't fit well under a jacket and a jacket would hide the neckline.

Margaretmatcher · 13/03/2022 11:21

Not really nice enough for a wedding imo looks like a dress the PTA mums wear as pp said

Fairyliz · 13/03/2022 11:47

Think it’s more country wedding in a barn look than the more formal wedding you are describing.
It’s also one of those dresses that everyone would remember you wearing so I don’t think you would get a lot of use out of it.

Kittykatmacbill · 13/03/2022 11:48

Thanks you all for your thoughts. I am amazed that anyone would wear it do the school run! But good on ya’! I think it’s just that I really like it, can’t think what on earth i’d wear it for otherwise, certainly not the school run or work!

Do I need to go full Roland mouret then? sigh problem is I don’t have the shoes or bag for such things so it’s really getting the whole thing from scratch. And I’ll never wear an iota of it again. As the first dress really is the smartest thing I can imagine!

So any suggestion of, erm, cost effective options for an apple shaped short arse, please?

OP posts:
DillDanding · 13/03/2022 11:53

It’s ok, but a bit casual. And unless you’re slim and tall, you’d risk looking like Kirstie Allsopp in it.

3peassuit · 13/03/2022 11:54

I love the dress but think you need to be a bit more formal for the wedding you describe. Have a look at bombshell or the pretty dress company.

Findingthelight1 · 13/03/2022 12:01

Oooh tricky one.
Gut instinct is not for that type of wedding, no. As the sort of people who are hosting a vair fancy cathedral and posh hotel wedding are likely to be the sort of people who will expect their guests to glam up, and thus you might look out of place if you turn up looking a bit Kirsty Allsopp off for afternoon tea at the village bakery.
However... if you are tall and thin and glamorous, with "done" hair and nails and all that jazz, and you pair it with an expensive bag and teetering heels then you will probably glam it up enough. I am none of those things so would probably just look like I was joining Kirsty for scones.

Findingthelight1 · 13/03/2022 12:03

Sorry, just seen from your update you're a short arse .. unfortunately I think that means the dress is out. Also the weird busty wench barmaid one above. I'll have a look for some suggestions..

Kittykatmacbill · 13/03/2022 12:06

Findingthelight1 neither am I! I think dh will one of only 2 men not wearing a kilt and dd1 (10) has point blank refused to wear a dress and is looking for a jump suit I prob ought to make an effort!

Nothing to stop you wearing shoes or a bag you already have, provided they’re vaguely smart. It doesn’t have to be heels and a silly satin clutch bag - but it probably should be a smarter look than Kirsty Allsopp at the school fete.

www.johnlewis.com/hobbs-rhea-broderie-anglaise-cotton-dress-cobalt-blue/p6057889 This is an example of something fractionally smarter and more appropriate, while also being cotton, very wearable, and could be worn with smart flats just fine.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/03/2022 12:30

How about this Op? Slightly patterned so shouldn't show any marks from wrestling kids. Not too long so no trip hazzard. Rather elegant & neutral accessories should be easy to find & wear again.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/03/2022 12:32

Sorry, should have said it's from Monsoon.

Hesma · 13/03/2022 12:36

Personally I wouldn’t, sorry

There are some very silly comments on here. I would wear that as an everyday dress as it's very much the sort of dressy 1950s groomed housewife look that appeals to me.

But having said that the range of acceptable options for weddings is vast. Frankly - there are 2 rules - don't upstage the bride and no jeans and trainers.

I had a look back at Harrry and Megan's guests. Yes there were some really OTT wedding only outfits. There were also pretty dresses that weren't. I can't tell them apart but one of Eugenie or Beatrice was wearing a dress that looked as if it had come from Hobbs smart dresses for the office range. One of Megan's Suits colleagues wore a beautiful Alessandro Riche dress with the same sort of vibe. James Blunt's wife had a gorgeous "garden party" style dress.

The dress will be brand new, which is good. It's fully lined, which is good. You can dress it up with heels, hat/ head piece. There's nothing wrong with that dress for a wedding.

ISeeTheLight · 13/03/2022 12:40

That blue Hobbs one from.John Lewis is GORGEOUS.

That's horrible. It's dull, frumpy, trying too hard and looks as if it's made of pure nylon.
