Can I wear this to a wedding!

Hey there,

Having spent the last two years in jeans and running gear, I have totally lost the ability to dress myself!

Can I wear this to a wedding? www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/kitty-midi-shirt-dress-ivory-lemon-fizz/sty-w0705-ltu?cat=C1_S2_G4

About the wedding - Extended family, will be child rangling, catholic cathedral then lux (maybe slightly ostentatious?) hotel for reception.

Would plan to wear with wedges and realistically accessorise with huge bag full of kids stuff…

It’s absolutely fine and also agree it’s Kirsty Allsop!

I always find it strange when poster come on the style and beauty and tell a poster their choice is completely inappropriate then suggest something incredibly drab and ugly instead

KimikosNightmare · 13/03/2022 12:46

@ISeeTheLight

That blue Hobbs one from.John Lewis is GORGEOUS.
Again, each to their own but to me it looks frumpy and dull. And it's made of polyester.

Agreed. It's a very pretty dress. It will not look out of place at a wedding. The OP will feel comfortable in it and will get further wear from it.

Most of the suggestions have been drab and ugly and have ignored the fact that the Boden dress is a style and fabric the OP likes- so why suggest dresses which are nothing like it?

It's a demure 1950s style- why would a busty, lusty barmaid wench look be better?

KimikosNightmare · 13/03/2022 13:15

@Fairyliz

Think it’s more country wedding in a barn look than the more formal wedding you are describing. It’s also one of those dresses that everyone would remember you wearing so I don’t think you would get a lot of use out of it.
Yes because everyone at every event ever always takes note of what everyone else wears.

On the one hand the OP is being told she can't wear it because it's too everyday but on the other hand it's too memorable so she can't ever wear it again.

Anyway I thought that silly rule had been killed off by Kate Middleton and Camilla who regularly wear the same dress several times.

@MinglingFlamingo thanks so much for replying. Your reason makes perfect sense. Thank you.
I didn’t mean to come across as criticising you - i was genuinely confused.

No worries SmileSmileSmile

OP- is there anywhere around you that hire out dresses? I have no idea of the cost, but might be worth looking into. Especially if you'll never wear it again. My MIL used to hire her hats for weddings.

Rantypanties · 13/03/2022 14:25

I’m tempted by this dress for a summer wedding this year! I think the Boden one is a bit Kirsty Allsopp Confused sorry!!

Can I wear this to a wedding!
KimikosNightmare · 13/03/2022 16:11

I don't know who Kirsty Allsop is.

The French Connection dress is drab and made of plastic. At a wedding I'd notice the OP's vibrant 1950s style dress and would ask her where she got it if she were seated at my table/ in the ladies when I was

That French Connection dress would merge into the anonymous bland "wedding guest dresses".

The OP is looking for a dress she can wear again. That dress ticks the box Hiring a hat would be the better option.
MarmiteCoriander · 13/03/2022 16:27

@KimikosNightmare- the OP said And I’ll never wear an iota of it again which I thought meant she won't be wearing it again- hence my suggestion to hire.

OP- can you clarify?

Roystonv · 13/03/2022 16:29

I think it is charming for an English summer wedding best of all you like it and it suits your requirements. Yes, others may go more formal/weddingy but so what (unless you are wishing to make an entrance for some reason). It is not inappropriate, you will not offend anyone so go for it. I have a phrase I use; would it "scare the horses" to guide me in such situations!

semideponent · 13/03/2022 17:01

Hmmm, I think the shirt collar is what puts me off, OP. Something about the everydayness of a shirt collar that just doesn't go with 'cathedral wedding' and 'lux hotel'.

I get the fact you like print, colour, a fit and flare design.

Kiopa · 13/03/2022 17:16

I think it's fine for a wedding. There will be people wearing more fancy dresses but also others wearing something like that. If you add a hat in one of the colours or ivory it will be just right.

Kittykatmacbill · 13/03/2022 17:30

Thanks for all your thoughts!

MarmiteCoriander I meant I didn’t want from buy an Uber wedding smart wedding out that I am never going to wear again.

I generally not a very dressy person (as my mum would say), and I like the idea of having a nice dress that I could just about wear again, but it has to be okay for the wedding too!

(I acknowledge that a collared dress is a bit marmite, but I love collared shirt, especially a natural fabric one!)

Doesn't say posh hotel to me, a bit mumsy too but you know your family, will they be in posh clothes like they are off to ascot or more relaxed?

GettingStuffed · 13/03/2022 17:43

It looks smarter in the blue

The OP doesn't want to buy a dress she'll never wear again. The Boden dress will be wearable over and over again.

KimikosNightmare · 13/03/2022 17:49

The Boden dress ticks those boxes.

My nearest Catholic Church is a cathedral. I’ve seen loads of weddings, local working class people, slightly posher church goers, travellers, celebrities and gangsters. Your dress will be fine.

IvorCutler · 13/03/2022 18:53

@Amelion I was just going to say it does look very Kirstie Allsopp! If that’s your thing op then go for it! I think it could definitely be dressed up enough.

DSGR · 13/03/2022 18:57

Too casual sorry

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/03/2022 18:58

Honestly, it's very lovely and perfectly suitable for the wedding, especially with the right accessories.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 13/03/2022 19:02

I think it's gorgeous, I like it so much I bought the same one in a different colour way! Accessorise it with cute shoes, bag, earrings etc and will be perfect. Have fun!

Mine is an Abbey. We get some seriously posh weddings. This dress would be absolutely fine.
