Culottes - do they ever look good?

www.icebreaker.com/en-gb/womens-pants-leggings/merino-culottes/0A56B7.html?dwvar_0A56B7_color=001

Are they ever a good substitute for a skirt, or do they always look weird? What footwear? Bare legs or tights/leggings?

@Instawhat

But mine are all more tailored/structured than those. And longer. Do you have a link?
I looked for a link but unfortunately my favourite two pairs have been discontinued. But this is similar to the type of thing I have: www.toa.st/products/flat-front-denim-culottes-olive-leaf

Mine are probably a bit shorter than those look so a midi length rather than nearly ankle length. I have one corduroy pair and one cotton twill. They are very comfortable and I do think they actually look reasonably smart.

These are the cord ones I have though not in stock: www.johnlewis.com/toast-lexi-cord-culottes-soft-blue/p5151602

Can't find a link to the twill ones, sorry.

balalake · 09/03/2022 15:22

They can do, but often don't. Depends on colour and the height of the woman wearing them.

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 15:42

The styling on the link is dreadful

I wear ones that look like a skirt

londonmummy1966 · 09/03/2022 15:48

I live in them but mine are longer (mid calf) and hang nicely - those are terrible. I wear them with knee high boots in the winter or ankle boots and knee high black socks/tights. In the summer I wear them with converse.

FayCarew · 09/03/2022 15:48

They sort of say 'I've given up'

1frenchfoodie · 09/03/2022 15:52

I’ve one linen pair from Uniqlo that I love but in general they are really tricky, harder than wide legged cropped trousers which I also love. Though dont quizz me on where a culotte endsand where a cropped wide leg starts…

The ones in the picture look make me feel a bit sad about what the merino could have been used for.

Calandor · 09/03/2022 17:34

Not those ones but I've seen some gorgeous brown fabric ones with pleats that swished when she walked and the women wearing them looked outrageously good

Littleguggi · 09/03/2022 20:53

Oh gosh those pictures bring back flashbacks of when I wore black knee length culottes with black fish net tights and black pumps 15 years ago. What was I thinking!

Nowadays I prefer longer culottes with bare legs and sandals or pumps. But never black.

Googlecanthelpme · 09/03/2022 20:59

Yes I actually like culottes! A few years back I had a couple of lightweight crepey ones for summer, one khaki and one a sort of Aztec pattern in rich tones.

As it was summer I wore body suits with them with strappy sandals / heels.

In colder months I’d probably go for a roll neck, I’d definitely go tailored / tight on top to balance the bagginess. Shoe wise, a chunky platform loafer or mule?

Alliswells · 10/03/2022 08:26

Omg the price of them Confused

Acunningruse · 10/03/2022 13:54

The ones in your link look like something an off duty basketball player would wear.
These, on the other hand, look divine.

Culottes - do they ever look good?
FayCarew · 10/03/2022 14:13

@GettingStuffed, to me a tank top is a sleeveless jumper
In the USA a tank top is a shell top

NewBrightonEel · 10/03/2022 18:21

I have lovely denim ones that I wear with strappy sandals. Those in the link remind me of grandads on the beach when I was a child with socks and sandals - just need a knotted hanky! They would look nice if they were styled differently.

THEDEACON · 10/03/2022 20:35

I love cullottes wear them lots but the ones in the link are hideous !

ChickenStripper · 10/03/2022 20:40

No. They remind me of an ex headmistress I worked with who used to stalk the corridors in hers.

MrsDrudge · 10/03/2022 21:34

Not with those socks and sandals!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/03/2022 21:37

They usually make people look like a 1930s games mistress. Or a 1930s lady hill walker. That kind of vibe.

liveforsummer · 11/03/2022 07:04

Also finding it very hard to judge as can't get past the awful sandals and socks combo. What were they thinking 😆

Angrywife · 11/03/2022 12:23

No
Ugly things

Calm33 · 11/03/2022 17:34

No

DramaAlpaca · 11/03/2022 17:36

I think they are hideous oddly-proportioned things that don't look good on anybody.

Kentucky83 · 11/03/2022 17:47

I owe my sanity to culottes! When I was 7, leaving infants and starting juniors, I adamantly informed my mother I was not going to wear skirts or dresses any more. My school uniform was supposed to be a skirt. Mam - a dressmaker - knocked me up some cullottes that looked just like a school skirt and I wore them every day for 4 years to school (they knew, they were fine with it).
My advice, of course, would be to wear exactly what you please and what you feel comfortable in.

iamsoreadyforbednow · 11/03/2022 17:49

Not on me, but they’re so comfy!

I’m 5ft on the dot and all the ones I’ve brought are like ankle skimming wide leg trousers 🤣

Mirw · 11/03/2022 18:41

I have worn culottes every few years all my life. In winter, with tights and Doc Martens. In the summer, with bare legs and sandals. I wear them to work and not. And they are not ageist...
