Can anyone wear a jumpsuit?

I love the look of jumpsuits. On any one else. I’ve tried a few on and I look like an angry toddler whose nappy is full.

I’m 5ft2 and size 18. So more Humpty sumptuous than Claudia Schiffer. Is there a jumpsuit trick out there I’m missing? Or do I just forget about them.

I’d love to wear this one at an upcoming wedding (I know I know, I’m well cheap) m.shein.co.uk/Plus-Swiss-Dot-Butterfly-Sleeve-Wide-Leg-Belted-Jumpsuit-p-2784203-cat-1927.html?scici=plussize~~ON_Banner,CN_ShopBySize,HZ_0,HI_0~~23_2~~itemPicking_00102949~~~~0 but suspect it just won’t look the way it does on the model…

I look like a tellytubby.

GettingStuffed · 08/03/2022 22:31

The thing is I remember them from the 80s, I'm 5' 7" and was a then 12 so probably a 10 now and I looked great in them, but if I sat down too fast I got a major wedgie. I'm now a lot bigger and my boobs take up a lot of the front in my clothes so I expect the wedgie again

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 08/03/2022 22:31

I can't wear them. I'm 5'7 but I'm like a vertical dachshund, freakishly long body and little fat legs. I also remember wearing one to a school disco in about 1986. It was white and I wore it with a neon belt, wristbands and socks. I think that was the start and end of my jumpsuit wearing days (although then I seem to recall it was a boiler suit).

Lurking9to5 · 08/03/2022 22:42

@AC2022

Also the toilet thing puts me off. 🤣
Ha ha, yes, didn't like to be the first to say it but when you've had a few glasses of wine and it's an ordeal getting out of your clothes in a public cubicle! Not great.
stringbean · 08/03/2022 23:07

Had a bit of experience with an all-in-one ski suit and how to go to the loo. The trick is to hang onto the sleeves as you undo the top half and sort of wrap them round your legs to stop them trailing on the floor Grin. I'm glad I have a separate jacket and trousers these days!

stringbean · 08/03/2022 23:09

And that includes managing ski gloves and staying upright in ski boots on a wet floor at the same time. Couple of glasses of wine and a jumpsuit? Piece of p* Grin

Marchingredsoldiers · 09/03/2022 20:22

I love all the jumpsuits posted. It makes me stupidly sad (as in a stupid reason to be sad) that I can't wear them. I try them on loads in the hope that this time I won't look like a telly tubby....I always look just oddly shaped.

NewSidOnTheBlock · 09/03/2022 21:53

OP I’m your height, size 14 and I look like a Tellytubby or Mr Tumnus.

I have tried jumpsuits, Lord how I’ve tried. They’re not for me.

PrincessSD · 09/03/2022 22:23

I’m 5ft 4 and was a size 18 with very large boobs. I love jumpsuits but found patterned ones looked better on me rather than plain ones. Tu in Sainsbury’s used to do a great range that were very flattering.

Kite22 · 09/03/2022 23:06

@MenaiMna

Two things about jumpsuits
  1. Why isn't everyone more afraid of dropping them in the loo/on toilet floor?
  2. Doesn't anyone remember last summer's hilarious thread along the lines of "help! I'm stuck in a Seasalt jumpsuit" OP was lucky to escape without the aid of the fire brigade - I wish I could do links!
P.S. Third thing: Wear what you like, the sooner more of us wear what we like the sooner we can stop sexism and body shaming (so happy this thread didn't go that way.)
Point 1 is a concern of mine too.

Plus, the whole having to get undressed whenever you need the toilet. The thought puts me right off, which is a shame as I think they often look lovely and are very versatile.

Point 2 - sounds hilarious, wish I'd seen that one.

1frenchfoodie · 09/03/2022 23:40

I have only found one that suits me but it really suits me - sleeveless black linen, cropped wide leg. I have worn it a few days a week every week for 3 or so years. It is by far the hardest working thing in my wardrobe as it can do work, going out, hanging around the playground. Definately worth the needing to shimmy out of it to go to the toilet.

mumulala · 09/03/2022 23:43

Just here to applaud humpty sumptuous 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
But... love that jumpsuit, think it could be quite forgiving with the right accessories. I like trying different belts. I find them flattering but im taller. If you can wear heels, that would be good!
I expect at your height " camel toe" is not so much of an issue 🤦🏻‍♀️

BusterGonad · 10/03/2022 06:18

I think you need to pay a bit more money for jumpsuits as they need to be cut well, I personally love a playsuit (short legs) they were my go to for nights out. The ones I bought always had a defined waist, like a, band or belt so it gave me a decent shape. I've never owned a jumpsuit as I'm tall and I know they wouldn't be long enough in the leg.

Weatherwax13 · 10/03/2022 06:28

@MenaiMna that thread was a gem. I snort laughed though it.
I have a couple of jumpsuits I love.
However, ordered one from Next last year. Squeezed my shoulders in even though I KNEW I was making a mistake as I did.
I could not get the sodding thing off.
A contortionist couldn't have done it.
Thank fuck I was at home not in a changing room.
Panic was rising in the end
I had to cut myself out with scissors and the relief was akin to when you realise the baby's head is actually fully out.
So be warned, OP.Grin

Lurking9to5 · 10/03/2022 08:02

Oh weatherwax i had a similar experience in a changing room. Nightmare.

Brogues · 10/03/2022 08:04

I’m 5ft1 and have quite a few jumpsuits and they suit me so it’s not necessarily a height thing. Where your body length is I think is quite important. Just try loads of different styles on - and look at the back view too!

Lurking9to5 · 10/03/2022 08:08

I know, im 5'1" and they can suit me if they have a waist. A baggy boilersuit no though

Craftycorvid · 10/03/2022 08:14

‘Humpty Sumptuous’ Grin I love it! And what on earth is wrong with looking sumptuous? I think Jumpsuits look fine on anyone with the right cut and accessories. It might need a belt or heels to balance the look and avoid possible accusations of having come to fix the boiler if wearing a plain navy number.

BlackAzalea · 10/03/2022 08:46

I'm wearing this to the office today
fr.aboutyou.be/p/bench/tenue-d-interieur-5677076?fullscreen-mode=1
am wearing it with DMs, so I look a bit like a paratrooper Smile, but I don't care, it's so comfortable.

ISpyCobraKai · 10/03/2022 08:51

@Anyfeckinusername

I’ve tried a few on and I look like an angry toddler whose nappy is full

Oh my god I love your description!

I’m jumpsuit mad too but have never owned one! I was about to buy this one

www.baukjen.com/products/sally-organic-jumpsuit-khaki

Still tempted but it’s bloody dear! I’m 5ft 10 and worry I’ll look like Stan laurel in it.

I like jumpsuits but I'd look like a dwarf Hannibal Lecter in that.
GettingMarriedAgain · 10/03/2022 10:15

I would only wear one that is either stretchy or doesn’t have sleeves and loads of buttons so is easy to get off otherwise there’s a high chance of wetting myself. I hadn’t even thought about dropping the top half in the toilet!!!

GettingMarriedAgain · 10/03/2022 10:16

And how anyone manages to go to the toilet if you’ve added a belt over the top of the thing I have no idea!

astorsback · 10/03/2022 10:55

I love jumpsuits.

I'm average height, size 12 top, size 10 bottom, with a small arse, short body and long legs so theyre perfect for me. Normal trousers usually have too much material around the hip and thighs.

I avoid the toilet problem by rolling the top & sleeves into my lap and hitching the trousers up at my knees before sitting.

LilyRose88 · 10/03/2022 13:57

Siobhán McSweeney wore a really nice jumpsuit in the final of the Great Pottery Throwdown on Channel 4 on Sunday and she looked really good in it. I would guess that she is around a size 18. She was tweeted about it and said it was from Next.

Splendididity · 10/03/2022 17:00

1frenchfoodie were was yr jumpsuit from please?
