What to wear for a Caribbean wedding

Im so blinking excited. Ive never been to a wedding abroad before and its many years since Ive travelled. Oh what shall I wear? The groom is American and there will be a rehearsal dinner the night before. Just like on the telly with cocktail hour and everything😃😃😃 so I will need two outfits for the night before and the day. Theres no dress code but I know everyone will go all out. Im a good size 14 and very top heavy and sweating with the menopause as it is😃. Any ideas what to wear? I wont be wearing a hat but some kind of hair band would be good as I have thick curly hair that tends to frizz in the heat.

Any decent websites I can look at? Ive read the how to look expensive on holiday thread but all the white line and muted colours just doesnt seem very weddingy. I need dancing on the beach clothes😂😂

I might be unduly influenced by the fact that half of these are photographed ON a beach... but see if any take your fancy. Lots of different silhouettes...

Very nice I’m not sure about sizes though.

This would be nice for the rehearsal dinner www.monsoon.co.uk/reeta-shirred-floral-print-midi-dress-ivory-24301746.html

sleaf · 02/03/2022 10:57

Scarlett & Jo have some beautiful dresses which might be suitable.

EachandEveryone · 02/03/2022 11:23

I like the fact that the Monsoon one is cotton. I’ve never been to a rehearsal dinner I don’t know what to expect.

How about these ? green one is more dressy , but I actually much prefer the orange print

ChickenStripper · 02/03/2022 11:33

Have you got the details of the wedding? Is the wedding actually ON the beach or is it on a lawn eg at the resort as quite different to what you could wear. You don't say what month it is either as that dictates also what you might wear.

or this?

EachandEveryone · 02/03/2022 11:49

No details on the service. The wedding party will be half from Ghana and half from the Caribbean but the bride and groom don’t want traditional outfits or any colour scheme. Myself and my friend are Irish background and it’s in July so we don’t want to burn before the actual day. It’s going to be boiling. I’m expecting it to be a proper party as my friends are the Ghanaian side and I’ve been to quite afew of their parties I deffo need to up my game a little black dress won’t do😂

How exciting sounds fabulous...have been to a Caribbean wedding but was local so very casual on the beach although smarter in church..I had a light jacket over my dress and shoes with a wedge so could stand in a while...a lot of the elder ladies wore a hat.. so can't help with that bit but as a fellow celt...
Cotton if you can, cover up as much as possible so that longer sleeve monsoon is a good look..
I would avoid reds/pink colours...only cos dancing in the heat+rum :) may make you redish anyway so cooler tones..greens/blues
Make sure you can use all day suncream and go as high factor as possible.. .I like ultrasun spf50..its worth investing in and the face one not too bad under makeup ...
Waterproof mascara or tinted lashes ....
Hope you have a fab time

The female guests in the weddings I've watched on the beach from the safety of my lounger have all been in floaty summer dresses.

I can't help with the rehearsal dinner as I've never gate crashed one of those 😂

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/03/2022 14:14

What time does the wedding start? If it’s sundown I would go for a jewel coloured evening dress and pashmina.

valerianaofficiana · 02/03/2022 14:36

How about navy linen slightly loose shift dress, flattering neck line and length a must, go mad with sandals, perhaps espadrilles or something corally or sparkly? Hair up in loose French twist?

Movinghouseatlast · 02/03/2022 14:36

Boden have gossamer great floaty cotton midi dresses at the moment. I would wear espadrille wedges, big earrings and a smart shawl/pashmina with it.

thisplaceisweird · 02/03/2022 14:47

Sounds absolutely lovely

Go bright and loud!

I would go for a midi skirt in a bright print or colour, nice top and a shawl if you want to cover up for the dinner (might be cooler at night) and then a dress for the day itself.

What are your requirements? e.g. no arms or legs, do you like a cinched waist or a low neck, what about colours that suit you? what shoes can you manage?

thisplaceisweird · 02/03/2022 14:47

are you comfortable buying online or do we need to stick to high street?

notawittyname1954 · 02/03/2022 15:01

Yes you can go bright. I wore a bright coloured maxi dress for my sons wedding in the Dominican Republic.

justaweeone · 02/03/2022 16:02

Exciting!!!🏝
I'd wear this sort of style

OOh, I live in the US and I've been to a fair few Caribbean weddings. Agree with everyone who says floaty silk dress for the ceremony. I used to do one in a bright block colour, but it's up to you! Always got mine from Whistles, but it's been a few years, so I don't know what they have in atm. Rehearsal dinner could be anything - I've been to beach BBQs and also black tie dinners. I'd ask the hosts - it's not an an odd question at all.

Footwear wise, go for flats or wedges, you'll absolutely end up on the beach at some point, and you don't want to be faffing about taking heels on and off. I usually do fancy gold gladiator sandals or a chunky espadrille wedge. No one will think it's weird if you're in flats (I'm 5'3).

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/03/2022 16:16

Ideally something that doesn’t crease, is light in weight is made from a natural fabric and perhaps has a thin lining (to avoid sweat marks showing through). If you’re prone to sand fly bites (like me) probably longer length as my legs always look a state in the Caribbean.

ExConstance · 02/03/2022 16:38

d make it an excuse to buy this dress www.mytheresa.com/en-gb/poupette-st-barth-soledad-floral-midi-dress-2012633.html?catref=category though there are lots of other nice Poupette St Barth dresses on the site.
