What to wear for a Caribbean wedding

EachandEveryone · 01/03/2022 14:05

Im so blinking excited. Ive never been to a wedding abroad before and its many years since Ive travelled. Oh what shall I wear? The groom is American and there will be a rehearsal dinner the night before. Just like on the telly with cocktail hour and everything😃😃😃 so I will need two outfits for the night before and the day. Theres no dress code but I know everyone will go all out. Im a good size 14 and very top heavy and sweating with the menopause as it is😃. Any ideas what to wear? I wont be wearing a hat but some kind of hair band would be good as I have thick curly hair that tends to frizz in the heat.

Any decent websites I can look at? Ive read the how to look expensive on holiday thread but all the white line and muted colours just doesnt seem very weddingy. I need dancing on the beach clothes😂😂

@ExConstance

d make it an excuse to buy this dress www.mytheresa.com/en-gb/poupette-st-barth-soledad-floral-midi-dress-2012633.html?catref=category though there are lots of other nice Poupette St Barth dresses on the site.

I can’t wait to finish my shift and look at these links. I’m on a diet so we will see. I’ll be lucky if I’m. 14 by then. I have broad shoulders and huge boobs like H cup. So menopausal I hate my looks at the moment but I’m sure that’s due to the past two years and not having a social life. I have good legs. I’m over 50 but not old fashioned. Blonde/reddish. Absolutely no pastels.

I would avoid bright colours if you don't feel comfortable at the moment due to menopause. Something in darker colour that compliments your complexion ( plus the redness from the heat😳) and won't show sweat.Not patterned and in natural fibres. Jazz it up with shoes, jewellery and perhaps a light shawl?
You are going to look fabulous!

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/03/2022 17:48

The light is different in the Caribbean and you may want to go bright. Have fun!

This could be perfect for the night before with espadrilles - and leaves more in the budget for your wedding day dress!

ChickenStripper · 03/03/2022 10:37

No long sleeves - it's July and the humidity will be awful. You want flowy and nothing tight and very comfortable sandals/shoes due to possible puffy feet. A light wrap to hand in case you end up in direct sun for any stretch of time.

VenusClapTrap · 03/03/2022 10:56

I think this is beautiful

This might be a bit on the short side, but it’s wafty and utterly fabulous!

I got married in the Caribbean many years ago so have some experience 😂

It’s going to be very hot but very very humid. They serve drinks wrapped in a napkin because condensation forms instantly. It took me a good few days to adjust. Regardless of menopause you’re going to feel hot and damp so aim for something lightweight and floaty so you avoid damp patches on your clothes. Blush

Bright jewel colours are perfect. Anything else looks washed out. Linen looks like a dishcloth after an hour so if you choose linen make sure the style will stand it. Natural fibres are best, cotton, silk linen etc. Viscose at a push but avoid polyester unless it’s chiffon or georgette.

Avoid waistbands if you can. Empire line dresses or wrap dresses work better.

The evening will be more humid than the day and will feel hotter for some reason.

Wear a t shirt over your swimming costume when in the water and stay in the shade. I saw some spectacular day two burns

Ozanj · 03/03/2022 11:22

@EachandEveryone

No details on the service. The wedding party will be half from Ghana and half from the Caribbean but the bride and groom don’t want traditional outfits or any colour scheme. Myself and my friend are Irish background and it’s in July so we don’t want to burn before the actual day. It’s going to be boiling. I’m expecting it to be a proper party as my friends are the Ghanaian side and I’ve been to quite afew of their parties I deffo need to up my game a little black dress won’t do😂
This is unlikely to be a casual beach wedding if half the guests are actually from the Caribbean. You should wear the type of clothes you would wear to a summer wedding in the UK.
Ozanj · 03/03/2022 11:26

I would go for a lightweight, floaty, maxi with a shawl. In humid weather long or short sleeves in natural materials can work better at reducing sweat (particularly if you have flabby arms) because it absorbs it. Due to the weather you will be expected to change for every function / event even if the same day.

Jins · 03/03/2022 11:33

Which island it is will make a difference as well. Some islands don’t have aircon everywhere. Worth checking the hotel to see whether they do because if so you’ll definitely need a wrap or pashmina

valerianaofficiana · 03/03/2022 14:04

OP has great legs - show them off, good length is 2" above the knees. I am still imagining loosely cut but still tailored, not a straight sack, shift dress. Espadrilles a size large as feet will swell 😑. Which solid colour would suit best with your complexion, darker shade doesn't show sweat stains. And sweat will be pouring. Find a fantabulous, bright jewel coloured silk shawl/ scarf for that proverbial pop of colour. You need to be comfortable, not worried whether you can lift your arms for fear of dark stains.
( I'm way too invested in this😳. Wouldn't we all want to go to Caribbean just about now)

Malibuismysecrethome · 03/03/2022 14:53

No it will be a very dressy affair don’t go casual you will be out of place.

Pinotpleasure · 03/03/2022 15:24

@EachandEveryone

There are some lovely floaty dresses (some heavily discounted) on

www.brandalley.co.uk - I typed in the search icon “floral dresses” but they weren’t all floral!

I used to live in Singapore - 85 miles north of the equator. To avoid mosquitoes wear light coloured clothing from dusk onwards. Also be advised that dark colours - especially black - attracts the sun’s rays. There is a reason why you may notice that in many hot climates the buildings are painted white!

BringMeTea · 03/03/2022 20:18

Oh that is lovely @Sillyname63. Good v neck for norks and half length sleeves with ventilation and a bright pattern that won't show sweat. Good find.

LadyEloise1 · 18/03/2022 09:45

Try Aspiga @EachandEveryone.
Lots of lovely dresses.

Sorry I can't do links.
