What are you buying?

I recommend Vestiaire Collective. I have plenty from there 😬

sansucre · 27/02/2022 11:41

Second-hand/pre-loved only really works if you know exactly what you're buying. I do think that much of the pre-loved market is over-priced too.

While £1000 is a decent budget, it is still middle-ground territory and for many of the (mass-market) brands, you're paying for the name rather than quality, both artisanal and materials. With the latter in mind, I would look at smaller brands, my favourite of which is Lutz Morris - timeless designs, beautifully made.

RunnerDown · 27/02/2022 11:45

That black Pravda saffiano is stunning. What a bargain.

MidnightMeltdown · 27/02/2022 11:46

The trouble with Mulberry, and a lot of other designer brands, is that a large chunk of the money you are paying is for 'exclusivity' or 'status'. Mulberry is the classic example here, because they used to be much cheaper. At some point, they got a new CEO who decided that in order to increase the brands 'exclusivity', they would hike the price. In other words, the extra money you are paying is Mulberry's attempt to price out the riff raff and make their more affluent buyers feel superior, rather than for any increase in quality. They are status symbols, which is why many people see them as tacky.

You need to think about why you are looking specifically for a £1000 bag. If it is high quality you are after, and you want your money to go on quality, then I would look for something niche outside of these mainstream brands. If you particularly like the design of the mulberry or other designer brand, and think it's worth paying the extra, then go for it, but it doesn't sound as though you do, otherwise you would already know what you wanted and wouldn't be asking people online.

@DoThePropeller

I like the Prada Saffiano - they have an orange one too.

Tempted to just blow the budget/wait a little longer and buy a Chanel bag but do wonder if I’d actually use it or just keep it in the wardrobe and stroke it occasionally.

It is worth considering that Chanel raises the prices of their handbags (and also some of their small leather goods) by 5% every year, although last year, they raised them twice. If you want to buy a Chanel bag, do it sooner rather than later.

I'd go on holiday instead

Maireas · 27/02/2022 12:00

@LiberteEgaliteBeyonce - I think we could speed it up by adding what's wrong with you and charity.
😊😊

Drink! (Are we adding holiday?)

Risky business 😂

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/02/2022 12:04

I'd spend about £50 on the bag and then have a nice holiday.

Anyone spending that kind of money on a bag needs their head examined.

Maireas · 27/02/2022 12:04

How many drinks is this one?

Maireas · 27/02/2022 12:06

I was referring to an earlier one that was both Ukraine andwhat is wrong with you?
I'm thinking 3

sammylady37 · 27/02/2022 12:16

I think the thing is it sounds pretty vulgar. If I was making a big purchase, I wouldn't start a thread on a social media platform about how much I wanted to spend and on something most people think is a waste of money. Especially at the moment when there is a cost of living crisis, heavy use of food banks...not to mention the awful news and people scared for their future. It's just crass. If you want to spend that amount on a handbag, go for it, but don't show off about it to strangers on mumsnet. (To think she actually just after recommendations alone is naive)

So what if some people find it vulgar and crass though? And what bemuses me is that it’s always handbag threads that the sanctimonious derail, never otters. There are at least 3 active threads in this forum about people spending hundreds on eyebrow microblading and I have yet to see a single poster bustle in and tell the op to buy an eyebrow pencil for 99p and donate the rest to charity. Funny that, eh. And as others have rightfully pointed out, men spending on frivolities is never criticised. Why wasn’t the poster who said she’d go to Greece told to buy a multipack of ice creams and sit in her back garden or local park, having donated the rest to charity? Why is a holiday to Greece deemed a more worthy expenditure than a handbag, especially given the climate crisis? After all, nobody needs a luxury foreign holiday.

sammylady37 · 27/02/2022 12:17

Never others, not otters.
Wonder what virtue-signalling an otter thread would attract though?!

Frollop · 27/02/2022 12:21

Hi OP I hope you find a beautiful bag.

I would get a classic colour/design which won't get dirty quickly. Something that was also practical so I could use it regularly and feel good every time I used it Grin.

Brand wise I'm not sure. I don't think I would get mulberry as people mention quality decline, if I got a LV I don't think I'd get a logo print. Do your research and go in store if you can to feel the weight, view quality etc.

NuffSaidSam · 27/02/2022 12:22

I think it's the inclusion of the £1000 in the title. It comes across as a target rather than a budget.

It's not 'I want a luxury bag' or 'I want a chanel bag', it's I want a £1000 bag. It comes across like it's the price tag not the bag that is wanted.

I think if someone started a thread 'You have a £1000 to spend on your eyebrows what would you do' it would have got similar responses.

Or 'You have £1000 to spend on socks what would you do'.

sammylady37 · 27/02/2022 12:26

That’s not the case though. As veterans of handbag threads here will tell you, they always attract similar posts. It’s tiresome, tedious and utterly unnecessary. The op’s title clearly tells people what the thread is about, why don’t those who are not genuinely interested in discussing such a purchase just scroll on by. Why do they need to post about how they couldn’t possibly do such an awful thing when there are people starving. Newsflash, there will still be people starving in the world whether the op spends her 1k on a handbag, socks, a holiday, saves it or donates it to charity.

"How can you even think about otters when some people can't even afford a handbag?" Or some such nonsense.
JolieJ · 27/02/2022 12:41

For anyone who likes handbags, putting a budget of a £1000 makes perfect sense because it's clear the OP would like a higher end luxury bag (WHICH IS TOTALLY HER CHOICE).

It's ALWAYS the handbag threads that get these comments. So boring.

FYI I enjoy beautiful luxury bags and I've been donating to Brooks Donkey Sanctuary monthly for the last 10 years Grin

NuffSaidSam · 27/02/2022 12:42

Not interested in socks or eyebrows, so I'd scroll on by.

Which is fine.

Some people are interested in how other people spend their money and want to comment.

Each to their own, right?

Well perhaps they should start their own thread elsewhere instead of derailing ones in style and beauty?
NuffSaidSam · 27/02/2022 12:44

Careful! You'll have people asking how you can think of donkeys when kids/the elderly/the disabled/the ill/refugees are suffering so.

Maireas · 27/02/2022 12:46

Also, @NufSaidSam
No need for them to be personal, rude, or question whether or not the OP needs therapy.
Just scroll by rather than that.
