What is your basic item of clothing that is almost impossible to buy?

For me it has to be a flattering t-shirt. The absolute unicorn of clothing items, in my book. Caught so many glimpses of one over the years, only to find the neckline was wrong, or it was too boxy, or the sleeves cut too high, or the fabric too thin etc.

But today, I not only glimpsed a unicorn t-shirt, but I actually managed to trap it, try it on and it is actually really flattering. Honestly. So, I bought it in every colour they had, and bought 2 in black.

I feel totally elated and strangely drained. I never thought I would live to see this day.

V neck t-shirts that skim an hourglass figure and aren’t boxy (which translates to matronly, at best, on me). They need to be fairly thick with a bit of stretch, sized so that the 10 accommodates G cups and a narrow back, and come in the right colours form me (so no khaki, yellow, cream etc). You’d have thought suiting black and white would make this easy…

HelloDaisy · 24/02/2022 22:44
**@HelloDaisy* and @cardoon* - try looking at Bonsoir for nightwear and dressing gowns. All in cotton. Not cheap but last for years.
Thank you for the suggestion. Those look lovely but all now are tie belts whereas I want/would like a zip as can’t stand having to readjust them constantly!

Giggorata · 25/02/2022 00:51

Thank you @FartNRoses, I have ordered some.🙂

Rina66 · 25/02/2022 07:32

These t-shirts are so flattering, drapey and tummy covering, I bought the black and loved it so much that i've have now bought the white, stone and navy as they are only £12.

Gap modern v neck are good if they still do them, thick and stretchy but soft and room for boobs

The other ones I love are house of neon scoop neck, they skim really nicely and I'm sure they do plain as well as printed (see pic)

Musmerian · 25/02/2022 08:55

@NiLunNiLautre - I buy the jigsaw camis. Not cheap but can often find on eBay. Lovely colours and necessary to stop my wrap dresses and tops being indecent!

NiLunNiLautre · 25/02/2022 10:01

@Musmerian thanks for that, I'll have a look for some Smile

MondeoFan · 25/02/2022 14:09

Loads

Decent swimwear, jeans I'm a size 14 and short and same as you a decent t-shirt. I have large ish boobs so almost impossible to buy a decent tee without it swamping everywhere else

Spellfish · 25/02/2022 18:40

@pawpaws2022 Those Gap ones on me a couple of years ago were huge and flappy and the V neck was much too low, even in a size smaller than usual. Goes to show we’re all very different shapes!

Ofcourse91 · 25/02/2022 18:47

I just want some 100% cotton cardigans. Not cropped, not 3/4 length sleeves and not bobbly after a few washes. Saw one in John Lewis the other day but it was too oatmeal coloured 🤨 and the navy one looked like a school cardigan.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 18:58

@lugeforlife

T shirt for me. I am short, short waisted and a bit chubby with not huge boobs but a big size of average. I am warm toned so black/white wash me out.

I want a scope it v neck off white/cream which isn't see through, washes well, not too thick as I like it to skim, fitted not boxy. Never gonna happen

Petit Bateau.
steppemum · 25/02/2022 19:02

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

Any top that is long enough. Actually, shirts/blouses, I can usually find T shirts long enough if I hunt hard. Size 9 womens shoes, that are not massively expensive or rubbish quality
I came on to say this. I am tall and long in the body and every top is too short.

and I give you your size 9 ladies shoes and raise you a size 10.

They don't exist.
I used to be able to buy them as a teen (Lilley and Skinner Tall and Small shelf) then not bad as an adult (Brantano at least did decent womens long boots)
but now there is Long Tall Sally and mens' shoes.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 19:06

@EdithStourton

I am built like a gibbon. Long legs, long arms. Sounds great, yeah? Bloody nightmare to dress.

My holy grails are long sleeves that make it all the way to the wrist, and cord trousers that don't flap an inch above my ankles.

Always fun and games finding jeans that fit. I have to spend a fortune.

I also have a very narrow back so bras are fun and games as well. Back measurement of a teenaged girl, boobs of an adult woman.

BAM clothing bamboo long sleeved layering T shirts have decent length sleeves . For bras, Polish brands will fit you better than any UK bra. Ewa Michalak, Avocado etc.
Kenwouldmixitup · 25/02/2022 19:10

Bra. Nuff said.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 19:10

My Holy Grail is a swimsuit that fits my bra size, 28H , but is also long enough for me as a long waisted 5’8” as the ones in my bra size are always too short, and the ones that either fit or are tall fitting, don’t do my bra size.
I had high hopes of Deakin and Blue but they were all too short in the body, no distance between boobs and waist in the largest cup fit.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/02/2022 19:26

@steppemum, there’s also Duo, but they are very £££ and the quality is no great. I just sent back some boots that were £170 and the leather was paper thin. I’d have kept them if the leather had been a good thickness and the soles resolable rather than moulded rubber. I wanted them to be a lifetime investment, but I was t sure they’d last more than a couple of winters.

NoToLandfill · 26/02/2022 21:32

I'm wondering for a swimsuit fix- to add extra fabric to the straps of that Matalan blue & white swimsuit. Lengthen them about 2 cm. Might work

Boood · 26/02/2022 21:40

@ZaZathecat

Boood have you seen these from Baukjen?
@ZaZathecat I hadn’t, thank you so much. Brilliant price as well!
Mandyjack · 27/02/2022 23:32

@Rina66

A V neck or scoop neck camisole style sleeveless top to wear under jackets and cardigans. It's such a basic item, they're always sold out, Wallis used to do a great one, Roman too. I've just spent £65 on a silk one from Lilysilk - I don't really want silk, just a crepey polyester double layer would suffice!
Matalan are pretty good for this type of top and will be significantly cheaper than £65
Mandyjack · 27/02/2022 23:38

Decent jeans that are comfortable and true to size! There are so many that vary so much in size, even from the same company. Had jeans from H&M before and feel far having to buy 14s. They seem to come up small but have to size up for waist size
