What is your basic item of clothing that is almost impossible to buy?

For me it has to be a flattering t-shirt. The absolute unicorn of clothing items, in my book. Caught so many glimpses of one over the years, only to find the neckline was wrong, or it was too boxy, or the sleeves cut too high, or the fabric too thin etc.

But today, I not only glimpsed a unicorn t-shirt, but I actually managed to trap it, try it on and it is actually really flattering. Honestly. So, I bought it in every colour they had, and bought 2 in black.

I feel totally elated and strangely drained. I never thought I would live to see this day.

lugeforlife Uniqlo has that exact t-shirt!

Drybird2020 · 18/02/2022 22:25

@IcyWinterWonderland, I have found the perfect leggings for me. Boden jersey leggings, high waistband, non-see through. I love them so much.

I'm another who seems destined never to wear jeans of any sort. I have one pair of skinnies that I can wear with a long jumper or short tunic but there is no way I'd wear them with anything else. Trousers have to be high waisted due to c section overhang, but I've never figured out what to go for.

And yes yes yes to longline tops and vests. Where are they all hiding? I include active wear in this.

NoToLandfill · 18/02/2022 22:30

Ok so Uniqlo also does blue or black work trousers. Pockets! Ridiculously comfortable.

I been searching for jeans for DH he's a nightmare to buy for 36waist and leg length and the can't be at all tight fitting he wants baggy jeans. In the last month I've brought him 3 pairs and none of them fit properly there all to tight fitting for him argghhh

Pegasushaswings · 18/02/2022 22:33

A Breton top. I live in them but finding the perfect shape, stripe and material at a decent price is way more difficult than it should be!

HelloBunny · 18/02/2022 22:33

Long sleeve t-shirts. I buy the H&M size 14+ kids ones, that come in twos or threes. Never find any decent ones in women’s wear...

aintnospringchicken · 18/02/2022 22:44

A smart jacket with sleeves that don't end 4-6 inches above my wrists.

sjxoxo · 18/02/2022 22:47

Good quality black leggings that offer support, stretch and are not see through.

A sports bra that is supportive of enormous breastfeeding boobs. Still looking. Getting desperate now.

T-shirts that are flattering and wash well.

HelloDaisy · 18/02/2022 22:51

A cotton, or cotton mix, zip up, long dressing gown that doesn’t make me look 90!

My last one was from M&S but they no longer do them and all others only seem to do fleece which I can’t wear as makes me static and itchy!

I’ve been searching for months and they no longer exist…

Torres10 · 18/02/2022 22:53

Still looking for decent quality vest tops , plain with wide straps and good socks that last ?
Quality finds are m&s sleep bras & jeggings. For bras the only place I've found is bravissimo, expensive but so worth it!

MrsMiddleMother · 18/02/2022 23:02

Black leggings that aren't see through or miles too long with a decent waistband. I'm an 18 and 5ft so it's tough.

Wavypurple · 18/02/2022 23:02

A plain black waist belt with a normal buckle.
Some calf length black boots for slim calves that aren’t over £100 and have a slight heel.

Badnightguaranteed · 18/02/2022 23:03

Just nice simple jersey dresses , bodycon or straight , not A-line or ‘skater’ cut (shudder) , just plain good colours . Not ribbed, not cheap see through fabric.

BigFatBloomers · 18/02/2022 23:04

@MrsGaskthrill
Have you looked at Pure Collection?
The one I have is quite fine but the neckline is low for a crew

Giggorata · 18/02/2022 23:05

Plain black cotton tanga knickers that cover the bum, with very narrow sides - basically two triangles, held together with bands. Really comfortable and look good. M and S did some decades ago, then a place online, which I now can't find.

Yearofthetygerburningbright · 18/02/2022 23:07

Jackets.

Doubleraspberry · 18/02/2022 23:07

@HelloDaisy Toast does very nice cotton dressing gowns but you might not want to take out a mortgage to buy one! They often come up on eBay though.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 18/02/2022 23:21

Thanks @nancy75 !

StarlightLady · 19/02/2022 07:19

Call me old fashioned (l’ve been called worse!), being a woman of a certain age (early 40s), unless it’s really cold out there, l prefer stockings to tights.

I want good quality, practical suspender belts that are designed for day to day wear as opposed to a flimsy non- functional thing for the bedroom.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 19/02/2022 07:35

T shirts for me too. I want loose fitting cotton or linen v neck t shirts.
I’ve got good ones from H and M over the years but I haven’t liked all the colours they have done recently.

EATmum · 19/02/2022 07:47

Like Hell, I sew my own clothes because I can then make them actually fit. Being a kind of uncurvy 5'2" makes it hard to find flattering clothes otherwise and the choice of patterns and options is fabulous.

My holy grail to buy is a beautiful slip - I cannot be the only person who doesn't want their dress to stick to their tights, but would like to feel more Peggy Carter than Vera Duckworth when wearing it. I have some plain M&S ones (and even those are only available on bigger stores) but I want something beautiful - and my sewing isn't that good yet!

lightisnotwhite · 19/02/2022 07:51

Yes to scoop neck top.
I want thin to wear under low cut work dresses. But not see through.
I want thin edging not a thick sewed band or a shiny edge or a fancy one.
I want cotton, not some stupid made up fibre.
I want a nice finish on the cuff.

Monsoon did one that I bought 15 years ago and still wear. It gas a bleach stain that’s now a hole so it’s under clothes only. It’s so oerfect I could cry though.

Levi 501’s? Lots on ebay in a 36/36
BuddhaAtSea · 19/02/2022 08:02

Baukjen!!! All my white T-shirts are from there.

MsJuniper · 19/02/2022 08:37

Long length, thin strap vest tops with thick material and a square neckline high on the chest. I had some from Asda Maternity when I was pregnant with DS and wore them until they literally fell apart this year. Cami type tops always seem to be low cut, have a v shape neckline or are too short. Closest shape I've found is H&M but they are so thin!
