M&S - so annoying

I've seen a dress I like. I click to put it in my basket. Hurry it says, as there's only one left in stock. Then when I get to the checkout it's sold out.

This is not the first time it's happened. They need to improve their stock synchronisation.

There were also a number of sale items, which aren't in stock at all, so I don't know why they list them.

Yes I spent a frustrating hour the other day trying to order some stuff from there. So many sizes/products out of stock and agree there's lots of sale items that are still showing online but completely sold out. Was trying to use a Sparks voucher as they're like gold dust these days but I just gave up!!

It's no better in store either. I know all retailers have stock troubles at the moment but can guarantee that anything I like is out in my size Hmm

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2022 23:04

The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. So annoying. You see it's the last one, hurry to pay for it, only to get as far as checkout and be told it's sold out Angry

poolblue · 06/02/2022 23:15

I've got stuff in my basket but it's now saying I haven't - even though it's got a number next to it. Keeps saying there is an error and won't let me check out. Suspect it's a ruse to stop me using my sparks discount. Just rubbish.

TheOrigRights · 07/02/2022 07:58

What does this even means "Out of stock online Hurry, only 1 left!"

I've had this saga today - item showing as in stock on the website but every time I go to check out it says 'out of stock remove product from your basket'. Really annoying Angry

DramaAlpaca · 11/02/2022 17:48

Just bumping the thread because I filled in the bit where you ask to be notified if the out of stock item comes back in.

I got an email yesterday saying it was in stock but by the time I tried to buy it, it had gone again.

This morning got another email which I spotted almost as soon as it landed in my inbox - so I went straight to the M&S site and got it. I should say got them, it's a pair of boots. So I'm pleased. Hope they fit now!

Mollysocks · 11/02/2022 17:53

Yesss!!! I had this with some leather leggings I wanted. Said, hurry 4 left and I put one in my basket and then I had an error message saying I couldn’t check out as they were out of stock! Thought they must be flying off the shelves so went back to item and it was still there, 4 left! Repeated this process several times and gave up!!

Appleseesaw · 11/02/2022 18:02

I’ve had this too. I checked back a couple of times and it was still showing as in stock, but was out of stock at the check out.

TheOrigRights · 11/02/2022 19:20

I've signed up to receive an email when it's back in stock.
It's all a ploy! Because I can't have it (yet) I really want it now.

Even worse, I ordered a pair of trousers and a cashmere jumper, that went beautifully together, for an event I was going to last week. It said the jumper was the last one but I got it and paid for the order so was really pleased. Until I got my despatch email followed by a PayPal notification of a refund from M and S. They sent a msg saying sorry but the jumper was out of stock when they went to pick it - after I’d ordered and paid for it. But instead of telling me before they sent the trousers they told me afterwards so now I’ve got a pair of trousers I don’t want as I have nothing to go with them and I’ve got to make a journey to the PO to return them. Not the first time this has happened with them. I’m not going to bother again.

Everyone says internet shopping is the future and the high street is dying but internet shopping only works if they have what they advertise - at least in a shop you can actually buy what you see.

DramaAlpaca · 11/02/2022 21:37

@TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder oh no! That's so annoying. I'd be fuming.

@TheOrigRights I hope your item comes back in. I was like that with the boots, I was checking every day to see if they were back and the more I looked at them the more I wanted them. Fingers crossed for you.

I've had that before! I understand stock problems and brexit and covid bla bla, but other online clothes retailers don't seem to have this problem with their website.

Yes numerous times this has happened to me it bloody winds me up!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 11/02/2022 22:32

This happens to me so much with M&S. Drives me mad! Other companies seem to have accurate stock info so I'm not sure why it's so hard.

ZittiEBuoni · 11/02/2022 22:34

I will only buy clothes in store now as I find ordering from the website sooo awful in so many ways.

Mollysocks · 11/02/2022 22:35

Do you think this is their cunning plan? 😉
ZittiEBuoni · 11/02/2022 22:36

Mollysocks I hope it works if so! Always rumours swirling about my local one closing and I would be bereft.

whatnumber · 11/02/2022 22:46

Yes I ordered and paid for a lovely Jaeger cardigan in the sale along with some other stuff.
They took the money for all of it.
Only when I got my delivery I found out no cardigan and they auto refunded me.
Very annoying.

tobee · 12/02/2022 04:02

Boo! I thought they’d got better at this, obviously not! Angry

Poppins2016 · 12/02/2022 04:16

I hate it when that happens.

The other thing I hate is going onto a website with a banner advertisement of a gorgeous model in a gorgeous dress (etc)... but the dress isn't actually in the collection for sale.

I also hate the adverts that pop up on websites/social media with a preview of clothing for sale, but when you click on the link most of the items are already sold out. Why on earth advertise something that's no longer for sale?! Boden and La Redoute are especially bad for advertising the same sold out items for days on end (I know, because I've occasionally clicked in the hope that things have come back into stock)!

TooManyPJs · 12/02/2022 05:23

This happens all the time with M&S, it's really annoying.

jay55 · 12/02/2022 05:48

I got as far as paying for a bunch of stuff in January only for half the order to be cancelled as out of stock. At least I still got free delivery.

timeforteaforyouandme · 12/02/2022 09:53

Agreed. Other sites manage to no do this. I emailed to complain. Can't remember the reply though

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2022 09:57

So many retailers have terrible online stock control.
Next is very good though.
I like the slightly smaller shops that send from stores if out of stock online - Jigsaw, Crew and Fatface
