What’s your favourite neckline and why?

I’ve always been a fan of v necks as have a large chest and these are generally accepted to be flattering but something has happened over the last few years.

Not sure if it’s my increasing age (more saggy round the neck/jowls), my ostrich like neck (vast expanse between my chin and my breasts), just wanting to be warmer, or Zoom, or the persistent trends (particularly love necklaces over fabric rather than on skin) but I now feel quite wrong and unfashionable in v necks and sharper in necks that hit above the collarbone. I think necklines change the whole feel of an outfit.

What’s your best neckline and why? Has it changed? And does anyone have any recs for higher neck tops for big busts? I can’t wear actual roll necks as my bust takes over completely and I feel strangled but never know what to search for to get a tight neck fit, crew neck and mock turtleneck are my best efforts.

Cowl neck, as I'm relatively flat chested & they make the most of what little I've got. I also quite like a boat / bateau neck as I don't particularly need to wear a strappy bra (being small up top) so the straps aren't an issue.

crazyjinglist · 05/02/2022 11:56

Exactly the same as you, OP, for similar reasons! I'm not jowly or crepey in the jawline or neck region (yet!), but I just find I'm not so keen on v necks any more. Too much expanse of upper chest on display. One thing I really hate though is boat necks and round necks that are too wide and show bra straps!

Rosebuud · 05/02/2022 11:57

For me round neck or boat neck. I find v necks quite dated now, and I really don’t like cowls. I will wear a polo neck in winter.

I’m quite tall and a ten to twelve but relatively busty. I find round necks more flattering.

loobylou10 · 05/02/2022 12:00

Boat neck for me

DelphiniumBlue · 05/02/2022 12:04

I think it's that higher necklines have been fashionable for a while and so that is the look which seems contemporary.
Personally, I would not wear a crew neck top/dress, which about 90% of available clothes seem to be right now, so am saving a lot of money by not being able to indulge my shopping habit.
I like a deep V or scoop neck, but also think a cowl or boatneck can look nice. I find them annoying though, cowl is too hot ( though better than a polo/turtle) and boatneck seems to slop and show bra straps.
I do find racer back bras comfortable, but that limits necklines: a collar/shirt works well, and has the effect of a V neck.
Sorry, that's probably more detail than you wanted!

ihaveonecat · 05/02/2022 12:31

Big boobs here
Scoop or v neck
Can never wear a polo (feel like I'm being strangled and look like a pair of walking boobs)

Pipersouth · 05/02/2022 12:37

I quite like a slash or boat neck to detract from larger bust area

Adatwistscientist · 05/02/2022 12:40

When I had boobs before DC then a square neckline was my favourite. Now they've literally sucked the life out of them and I'm left with flatness I find a higher boat neckline is more flattering. I'm still hourglass though so this is something I struggle with.

notawittyname1954 · 05/02/2022 12:41

I tend to have to always wear a camisole under a v to break the expense of bosom but a high neck strangles and I end up with what looks like a bolster monoboob

LivingDeadGirlUK · 05/02/2022 12:44

Square neck is my fav, followed by v neck. I like boat/slash in theory but I do have to wear a bra and hate that they show the straps. I also got some wide neck jumpers which look odd with anything under them so that was a mistake.

SalsaLove · 05/02/2022 12:48

V neck or cowl neck. With a v neck I tend to wear a double chain necklace to break the space.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 05/02/2022 12:51

Exactly the same as you OP. However, I do suit a shirt collar, so I am not exposing too much chest.

sandgrown · 05/02/2022 12:55

I love a crisp white shirt but so many of them gape over the boobs even in larger sizes

Pipersouth · 05/02/2022 12:57

Sweetheart neck for going out! Grin

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 05/02/2022 12:58

Wide square neckline or milkmaid style. I have broad shoulders and a long neck and this kind of emphasises and balances them at the same time somehow, making them into a feature. A crew or v neck just looks too narrow on me and makes me look broader.

Wiennetta · 05/02/2022 13:04

I love roll necks. I’m tall, 5 foot 10 but a size 8 and petite shape (small boobs, narrow shoulders). Roll necks look elegant on me. My favourite work outfit is a version of long sleeve roll neck tucked into cigarette trousers with loafers or brogues.

MarshaBradyo · 05/02/2022 13:08

Crew neck very simple and I’m really picky on shape

I like ATM tshirt shape and similar for jumpers

mrsmacmc · 05/02/2022 13:11

Sweetheart is my preferred neckline followed by a v-neck. Can't stand round necks or high necks

Chishnfips · 05/02/2022 15:01

I have a large bust and v necks look awful on me. I like boat necks, crew neck or high polo necks. Layered necklaces give that v shape appearance over the material.

MorganBrocklehurst · 05/02/2022 15:29

I love a halter-neck because it covers my (large chest) but shows of my shoulders and arms, both of which are well-toned/I really like. Unfortunately, most halter-necks expose the back, so ones with covered backs are really hard to find. Otherwise, I prefer high(er)-neck lines rather than scoop necks or any kind of tops that show off my cleavage. I have never liked v-necks either.

Pigtailsandall · 05/02/2022 15:34

Think I'm in the minority here but I like mock necks/high necks but they have to be loose & non-itchy.
I also like v-neck when they are part of a button-down shirt or shirt dress.

Crew necks are the least flattering for me. They make my chest look enormous in a matronly way

BlueBlueCowWondering · 05/02/2022 15:41

Crew necks are the least flattering for me. They make my chest look enormous in a matronly way Plus I have a short neck so I end up looking squat. Crew necks are the least flattering option for me

Best for me are a wide collared V neck

BeyondMyWits · 05/02/2022 15:48

Boat neckline for me. I have an "elegant" neck and point sharp collar bones... on top of a chubby body... boat necklines define and distract, a bit anyway.

SenecaFallsRedux · 05/02/2022 15:56

Boat neck for me. I have a long neck and short waist, and that neckline looks best on me.

londonmummy1966 · 05/02/2022 16:03

I have big boobs too. What I'm finding works for me at the moment is a layered approach. So I wear a thin white t shirt from Uniqlo which has a round neck that is lower than a crew and higher than a scoop. Over the top I wear either a v neck jumper or a collared jumper worn with the neck open to create a V. This still gives the minimising effect that is flattering to bigger boobs but provides coverage that makes me seem less busty if that makes sense.
