What’s your favourite neckline and why?

I’ve always been a fan of v necks as have a large chest and these are generally accepted to be flattering but something has happened over the last few years.

Not sure if it’s my increasing age (more saggy round the neck/jowls), my ostrich like neck (vast expanse between my chin and my breasts), just wanting to be warmer, or Zoom, or the persistent trends (particularly love necklaces over fabric rather than on skin) but I now feel quite wrong and unfashionable in v necks and sharper in necks that hit above the collarbone. I think necklines change the whole feel of an outfit.

What’s your best neckline and why? Has it changed? And does anyone have any recs for higher neck tops for big busts? I can’t wear actual roll necks as my bust takes over completely and I feel strangled but never know what to search for to get a tight neck fit, crew neck and mock turtleneck are my best efforts.

I find boat neck flattering these days

bippityboppity87 · 05/02/2022 16:14

V neck or scoop neck. I don't like things too high up as I have quite big boobs and would feel too Miss Trunchbull looking

SecretWitch · 05/02/2022 16:18

Scooped neck. I have nice collarbones and I think it’s flattering for my large chest.

Blueuggboots · 05/02/2022 16:25

Boat/slash neck or square neck.
I never wear round, scoop or crew.

lisaandalan · 05/02/2022 16:43

Boat neck , not around your throat and not too low. X

Westerman · 05/02/2022 17:17

I have big boobs so find that v necks and scoop necks suit me much better. I don't really take any notice of fashion and try to work with what flatters my shape most.

ladygindiva · 05/02/2022 17:20

I'm always drawn to square necks as I ( rightly or wrongly) feel they give my puny top half a bit of definition, or bulk. I'm a classic pear shape, I like flouncy puffy sleeves for the same reason.

Years ago Trinny and Susannah on what not to wear said my shape should wear V necks (high waist, small bust) and I stuck to that for years. They do suit me best.

However, I’m permanently cold now so just wear round neck sweatshirts & jumpers over round neck T’s. Years ago I did buy a snuggly cowl neck and DM & DSis laughed at me saying I looked like DGM! I’ve never worn one since.

Angrymum22 · 05/02/2022 17:23

V neck because I have broad shoulders and decent boobs. My cleavage is great despite my age I still have good separation and they look rounded and full with a v neck rather than flattened and saggy. I’ve just had lumpectomy with mammoplasty on my larger more droopy boob after diagnosis of breast cancer so still have the confidence to show them off.

DSGR · 05/02/2022 17:26

Crew and boat.. I’ve gone off v necks too as I’ve got older

User7853367 · 05/02/2022 17:36

I love a v neck, almost all my tops and dresses are v. I also like sweetheart necklines but you don't see them as often. I hate things round my neck so never wear polo neck.

Gosh that was fifteen to twenty years ago. I’m not sure if they were doing it two decades later Ie now, they’d be giving the same advice. Back then v necks were fashionable, now they are very dated, especially the old showing cleavage, it’s not current and when something is very dated, like the silk scarf giving a “pop” of colour, it ages us.

LubaLuca · 05/02/2022 18:52

Horseshoe for me, but it's not easy to find! I have a short neck and I'm busty, so nothing too high.

LadyEloise1 · 05/02/2022 19:09

I hate v necks - I've no idea why.
I love square necklines. I think they suit everyone. I wish they had been more readily available in the past.
They appear to be coming back in. Yay !

Why do tshirts have such high round necklines.
Unless one has a swan like neck ( and with so many of us overweight ) they just aren't flattering.
One of my bugbears.

BestIsWest · 05/02/2022 19:12

Same as you OP. A combination of narrow shoulders, a long neck and short hair means v necks look terrible. Cream and boatmnecks are best so long as they don’t show my bra straps.

BestIsWest · 05/02/2022 19:15

Having said that I love a cowl neck too. Have a couple of cashmere snoods from John Lewis that I’ve worn constantly for the last two winters.

5128gap · 05/02/2022 19:16

Interesting. I'm 52 and have really gone off v necks on me over the last couple of years. I could never quite put my finger on why other than they seemed to age me. I'd been wearing the v higher as I'm nit keen on my sun damaged upper chest, and it just looks odd. Also gone off crew and polo as they seem to draw the eye to my less than great under chin area. I like boat and love a bardot as I have nice shoulders.

TheOrigRights · 05/02/2022 19:54

Polo (fitted or baggy) or turtle. I am small chested, tall and slim.
It's good cos I get cold!
In summer I wear high neck sleeveless, and halter also looks good.

peoplearepeople · 05/02/2022 20:04

@londonmummy1966

I have big boobs too. What I'm finding works for me at the moment is a layered approach. So I wear a thin white t shirt from Uniqlo which has a round neck that is lower than a crew and higher than a scoop. Over the top I wear either a v neck jumper or a collared jumper worn with the neck open to create a V. This still gives the minimising effect that is flattering to bigger boobs but provides coverage that makes me seem less busty if that makes sense.
This is exactly what I do as well. I have a 32hh bust. Anything high necked looks just awful on me. Makes me sad as I'd kill for a smaller chest and to be able to wear a wider range of clothes. Sad So much that is available is high necked and flouncy or really oversized and I badly need to wear well fitted clothes to make my figure look ok. I miss all the v neck or wrap style tops that used to be in the shops. I don't think those styles need to be dated depending on how you wear them and I'd rather look dated than wear clothes that don't suit me anyway.
BusterGonad · 05/02/2022 20:06

I have big boobs too and my trick is to wear a fine knit roll neck under my favourite dresses, a bit of a 60s look, so under shift dresses or sleeved dresses, so you still get the v but you're also warm. It also means your dresses can be carried over to the next season. In tshirts I like a v neck, but they are a bit dated, like a 90s dad look imo. But crew necks make me look really booby. In dresses I like a shirt dress, or a lower neckline. I quite like a shift with a high neckline but it needs to be tight fitting creating a waist. Jumpet dresses are also a favourite too but always fine knit to not add too much bulk.

RestingMurderousFace · 05/02/2022 20:13

I'm finding that V necks are starting to pull my face down, making me look more even more haggard than normal. A nice neat crew neck works best at the moment.

Lampzade · 05/02/2022 20:15

Square neckline. I am very slim but I have large breast

SapphireSeptember · 05/02/2022 21:14

Square or sweetheart, probably because they're harder to find (and I like Tudor and Georgian fashion.) While we're at it, I love elbow length sleeves too, or ones with drapy bits. Grin

BusterGonad · 06/02/2022 06:10

I had to Google Sweetheart neckline, it's a very nice look.

Ilovetommycat · 06/02/2022 06:51

V neck or scoop neck always. Really hate anything close to my neck.
