It's my step-daughter's wedding this autumn and I'm beginning to think of a wedding outfit. I really like this dress but I'm not sure if it's too casual. The model wears it with boots but worn with heels, a nice bag (and even a hat!) would it be suitable for a wedding at a country house venue? Or not special enough?

SD has bought a beautiful traditional wedding dress and not sure what the mother of the groom is wearing yet. I hate the usual mother of the bride stuff so am looking for a normal but lovely dress which I could hopefully wear again. I'm 5'7" and usually a 10 but might need a 12 in Whistles.

Thank you 🙂

@TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek 😂😂

Thanks for your honesty! Your post made me laugh! I'm enjoying looking online and will go on a real shopping recce soon to try on different styles.

@SD1978 Without going into details, I won't have to consult/coordinate with any other significant party regarding what I wear. Obviously I'll check with the bride and mother of the groom.

I think your first choice is a lovely dress OP and it's imminently sensible to buy something you can wear again. Would you have a jacket with it as well or a throw ?

I would also think as DSM to the bride it's a good choice as you want to appear elegant but don't want to appear to be trying to take the place of the DM.

rookiemere · 08/02/2022 08:45

I think the Ebay dress is awful though- sorry - please don't buy it, prime example of what happens when you go against your gut.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 08/02/2022 10:18

I think you need to wait till there's more on offer in the shops

I have recently found these spanish dress pages and they are fabulous.

and this one

Very wedding appropriate

HallieLA · 08/02/2022 20:34

Loving those @Maighnuad.

I also like the Spanish designer Carla Ruiz for wedding type attire.

ClariceQuiff · 08/02/2022 20:58

I much prefer the indie boutique one. The first one is rather dowdy for a wedding - it might look good a la 90s with DMs and a camou jacket but guessing that's not the look you want.

The DVF one with the waist tie is very 1980s barmaid, so not what I would choose either.

Nomorefuckstogive · 08/02/2022 21:04

I think it’s lovely. All about the accessories IMO. Strappy heels and a smart bag, plus some nice, delicate jewellery and a wide brimmed hat would look amazing. Elegant and not OTT.

Nomorefuckstogive · 08/02/2022 21:06

The first one, I’m talking about - the blue. Sounds as though it would really suit you.

SD1978 · 08/02/2022 22:18

@catwithflowers - it wasn't meant as a sly SM dig- I really hope you didn't take it that way- with family dynamics also didn't want to see you not enjoying the day because someone there possibly took the hump and ruined the day xx

MillieMoonbeam · 08/02/2022 22:27

I like the first dress OP. Dress it up with some jewellery, a bag, strappy shoes and jacket it will look lovely for a wedding. A dress you can wear for different occasions afterwards too.

catwithflowers · 08/02/2022 22:29

@SD1978 definitely not taken that way! 🌸😊

I think it actually could look great at a wedding with the right shoes and accessories! I think the model is dressing it down with boots and so losing how smart this dress could actually look. I would order it as long as there is free returns which I think Whistles usually offers and see how it looks. I honestly think it could look fab!

UpintNorth · 09/02/2022 05:09

@catwithflowers
Since you like the blue, a few more options, a couple of longer dresses that are a little more “dressy” and special occasion. I’m also on a budget so I’ve gone with brands I can afford - I suppose if you like these and suit them you could really go to town with accessories!

Good luck with whatever you decide xx

catwithflowers · 09/02/2022 11:17

Ahh thanks ladies, for joining in my search! 🌸. I love this Rixo dress but it's not part of their current season and The Outnet only has it in an extra small ☹️

But this is maybe the kind of thing I'm veering towards, dressier than my first option but kind of along the same lines. Love blues and greens. Green is actually my favourite colour one one I suit but there don't seem to be as many green dresses around. This is the kind of dress I feel comfortable in and I think one that could be used again for a posh dinner out!

The Lauren from Monsoon is pretty. I can't do high necks at all and really prefer a V but lots of nice suggestions 😊
