It's my step-daughter's wedding this autumn and I'm beginning to think of a wedding outfit. I really like this dress but I'm not sure if it's too casual. The model wears it with boots but worn with heels, a nice bag (and even a hat!) would it be suitable for a wedding at a country house venue? Or not special enough?

SD has bought a beautiful traditional wedding dress and not sure what the mother of the groom is wearing yet. I hate the usual mother of the bride stuff so am looking for a normal but lovely dress which I could hopefully wear again. I'm 5'7" and usually a 10 but might need a 12 in Whistles.

Thank you 🙂

This dress is a similar shape but the fabric and cut elevates it to a dressier style I think. Also could be reworn.

It’s from Reiss

That’s lovely, @Bunce1.

@Bideshi

Much nicer and classier than all those deeply weird MOB outfits that make usually normal women look like pantomime dames. I like it. Don't get lured in to the wedding hype. Look like a beautifully scrubbed up version of yourself.
This Traditional Mother of Bride outfits are very ageing and very over the top .

This is exactly how I view most traditional mother/step mother of the bride/groom outfits.

I'll keep looking for a lovely dress in autumnal colours, something which feels like 'me' and which I'll enjoy wearing on the day. 😊

@SparklingLime

It’s rather clinical looking. I can imagine it as a uniform for a receptionist in a private clinic.

😂😂😂. I can't get that image out of my head now!!!

That's much nicer. The other dress is far too casual- just an ordinary, every day dress. Could be worn to the supermarket and no- one would look twice.

How about this? Very beautiful , sorry about the price tag!

I agree - lovely dress and perfect for a wedding. Much better than the prescriptive ageing MOB type outfit where you'd feel trussed up and not yourself. You are tall and slender and with your colouring I'm sure it will look lovely. Perhaps with a cashmere wrap - stylish, warm and not trying too hard.

@Bunce1 I love that dress but I can only see it available in petite and I'm 5'7". I did spot this on the Reiss website though and rather like it.

I do wonder how it would work with D cup boobs though 😳

Love that too! Very Versace.

The right underwear can ensure an optimum silhouette.

DSGR · 07/02/2022 19:54

Original dress is too casual, I think the second Reiss one is a bit drab.. could you dress it up with good shoes and bag maybe?

HallieLA · 07/02/2022 20:17

I love these - see photos - for something special (silk) but not too typically 'wedding'.

From an indie boutique.

@DSGR I do have some pretty fabulous LK Bennett snakeskin heels that might possibly go with the dress. And I'm always up for buying an expensive handbag 👜. I'll keep looking and thanks everyone for the ideas!

I think it’s really nice op. It’s a little casual on its own but it depends on what you put with it. You definitely need a nice hat :)

catwithflowers · 07/02/2022 20:33

I have a very bonkers and rather large black hat (£6 charity shop 😂) which might possibly go!

I also saw this on eBay but am not sure about the thick waist tie. I kind of like the Diane von Furstenberg look though. Again with decent shoes and a hat!

@catwithflowers - try the outnet for cut price DVF or check out the pretty dress company if you want something to suit an hourglass figure. Beautiful greens and purples if you're going autumnal.

I love the second Reiss dress you linked to. But may be a bit low cut if you are busty. I think def worth trying though.

Snog · 08/02/2022 01:33

I really like it and the blue will work well with the orange of the bridal party.
Bonus if you can wear it again!
I agree much nicer than many "MOB" outfits.

SD1978 · 08/02/2022 02:46

I think also to bear in mind- are you there as an involved memeber of the bridal party? Sorry- don't mean that to sound rude, but are you looking for a SMOTB type dress, top table, or a close guest, as opposed to an acquaintance dress? The type of dress (I reckon) really depends. Has there/ will there/ should there be a convo with MOTB regarding colours so you don't clash if you both are front and centre stage? You mention wanting to match the bridal party- maybe should check what she's doing as the mother so you guys also compliment and don't clash? Although that level of thought may juts be my weirdness.....Wink

TurkeyRoastvBubbleandSqueek · 08/02/2022 03:52

OP, you sound beautiful, and that any style of dress would suit you. I really liked your very first choice as an everyday outfit, and I think that with the right accessories it could look lovely for a wedding guest, but if there is an evening do, I think I would want to change into something a bit more like a cocktail dress.

However, I think your next choices (sorry I can't say this gently enough), go from bad, to, really? I wouldn't wear either of them out, unless to a supermarket, if you paid me - I hope you can laugh at me saying that! So far, I am sad to say that the pp choices are just as bad, if not worse, especially the one that cost over £1000. It is another one that you would have to pay me to wear. I didn't stop to examine the material or the cut, as the style was a very mumsy, 1970's style, dress, and the colours look like one of those paintings where they throw different colours on to a massive canvas, and ask circa £20,000 for it. Of course the artist has to already be well known, or famous in another field, to get someone foolish enough to buy it!

OP, can you take your DSD with you to help you choose an appropriate and beautiful dress?
