Are wool coats totally out of fashion at the moment?

Looked around me today and it dawned on me that I am the only woman I seem to see who wears a wool (I guess sort of 'smart') winter coat now - absolutely everyone else I see is wearing a parka or puffa (mostly the latter). I'm just asking out of curiosity - I love my coat, I'm not ditching it - am I very out of style? I sort of thought a wool coat was a classic that couldn't go in or out but am I wrong?

I am too! I love a more formal, fitted style. Double breasted if possible and with a scarf. I think I might be stuck in the early noughties too Grin

Ohdearthatwasntgreatwasit · 31/01/2022 21:11

I think it really depends on the silhouette.

Tailored, structured wool coats do look a bit dated now imo, but I have seen a lot of women looking amazing in oversized/dropped shoulder/ cocoon style ones.

You need to be very slim and fragile to pull the look off though.

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 31/01/2022 21:22

I think it's a classic which is temporarily out of vogue because no one is going to posh formal type events. Or even work. They're just not being called for, but they'll have their day again soon enough.

FigitBit · 31/01/2022 21:33

I consider a good wool coat a classic but casual clothing is having a moment right now off the back of lockdown - the puffer goes hand in hand with joggers , trainers etc . Keep hold of nice wool coats they will be back

AmbushedByCake · 31/01/2022 21:36

Agreed. I needed a smart funeral coat this year. Extremely difficult to come by.

wonderstuff · 31/01/2022 21:39

I’m wearing my wool coat, but I’m probably not fashionable! I wear mine with my hoodie often so very casual.

pastypirate · 31/01/2022 21:58

I think there's one on next website atm. I'm a bit annoyed I want a plain formal coat to wear to work!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/01/2022 22:00

I love mine and usually wear it, but the weather has been unpredictable recently so I've been wearing an anorak!

Wiennetta · 31/01/2022 22:13

I see loads of wool coats around. But I agree with @Ohdearthatwasntgreatwasit it’s the style of wool coat that’s changed - they’re more oversized/long length/relaxed fit, with casual clothes. So I see a lot of outfits along the lines of chunky boots, tailored joggers, knitwear, beanie and boyfriend style coat.

The sort of smart wool double breasted coat with smart jeans and boots looks a bit Kate Middleton in the 00s. They’ll have their time again but at the moment that style is not fashionable.

Darklane · 31/01/2022 22:15

I’m probably even more unfashionable as I’m wearing my sheepskin coat, it’s jolly cold up here.

MarshaBradyo · 31/01/2022 22:18

I only have wool coats no parka or puffa

A range of styles / shapes though

YoComoManzanas · 31/01/2022 22:20

My down coat is much warmer than a smart wool one and has deep zip pockets rather than pretend pockets. I sometimes pair a micro down jacket under the smart wool jacket though but only if I were in the office or going out to an event. Rare these days.

I have a calf length, double- breasted, black Windsmoor coat that I got from a charity shop. £30. My sister found it for me. Best money I ever spent on clothes. I love have something smart for evening and funerals and just nice times out. But it's not practical for wearing in and out of the car, and I'm not ruining it by wearing it for work or walking the dog because finding another quality coat is a nightmare. And so many of the good quality coats don't button up at the neck which is ridiculous...and cold. I hate puffa coats. Lockdowns puffed me up too much as it is.

I think you are right. I bought a wool coat in a black Friday sale before Christmas and have been wearing it recently just to go shopping. It probably looks very old fashioned but I don't care. I also have a long black wool coat with a fake fur collar that I have had for years.

There is currently a thread about camel coats. We live rurally and I have never seen anyone wear a camel coat, not even in town.

And lastly, neither of my wool coats are as warm as my parka, nor are they waterproof and they don't have any inside pockets, so I find my parka much more practical most of the time.

I came on to say I'm still wearing one, but actually I'm wearing this style pretty much exactly.

I do a very tailored, military-style one as well, but I've barely worn that this year.

evilharpy · 31/01/2022 22:41

I really hope they are totally out of fashion. Then my chances of finding the perfect Max Mara camel coat in a charity shop are bound to improve if everyone else is ditching them Grin

OneFootintheRave · 31/01/2022 22:41

Talking of classic wool coats, anyone know where I could find something very similar to this is style and colour? Grin

I just bought a wool coat and I am really enjoying wearing it. I've been wearing parkas/puffas for years and it's great to feel a bit smarter.

FrugalFrancine · 31/01/2022 22:46

I still wear mine! It's actually my favourite coat. It isn't that warm though, which is the only thing. I do have a massive puffy number for freezing cold weather.

Selkiesarereal · 31/01/2022 22:54

@OneFootintheRave have a look at Warehouse, they have some in that colour and similar style. Don’t know what their quality is like now though.

Spectre8 · 31/01/2022 22:58

I love my formal looking coats, not neccessairly wool material but still tailored and double breasted. I just personally cannot like the parka/ puffer coat look. So fluffly and makes me look massive! I think people look like they are drowning in their puffer coats and rarely gives the person a shape like a tailored coat does.

I can't pull off the cocoon dropped shoulder stuff in vogue at the moment.

Tailored clothes suit me and thats what I'll wear if it makes me happy. Other people may think off thats not in fashion but fashion is subjective so :P

I wouldn't be seen dead in a parka or a puffa. I'm not sure how many wool coats I've got- around a dozen possibly.

I don't care if they are out of fashion. I prefer tailored coats.

I'll add a codicil to my will - that's the only way my Max Mara coats will ever be prised out of my hands !
Stevie6 · 01/02/2022 01:45

I've recently bought 2 military style ones, mid thigh length, just need the rain to stop to wear them. Boohoo etc have loads

Bussinbussin · 01/02/2022 01:50

I only wear mine on the very rare occasions that the rest of my outfit is so smart it'd look ridiculous in a puffer/parka, or if the weather is guaranteed to be fine all day. They are not my warmest coats nor the most easy and comfortable to wear.
