Dungarees yay or nay?

I've been tempted to get some black cord dungarees for a while but haven't found any I have been able to try on. I saw a lovely pair in Oliver Bonas but they have now sold out and we're £85.

I'm a menopausal 44 year old who is reasonably slim with a pot belly. Where would I wear them and what with?

Have been living in sweaty Betty leggings and hoodies for the past few years as 100% wfh but want something new. Think I want to secretly re-visit my rave days....advice please.

Dungarees yay or nay?

Right well I've ordered a pair of Whitestuff black denim ones in the JL sale for the bargain price of £25!

Went down to a size 8 so hopefully they fit. Will report back with a photo seeing as this has been such a divisive thread 😊

Also ordered some puff sleeved Bretons from Boden to wear with them.

Have to say I went shopping in Oxford st last weekend and disliked 90% of what I saw, with the exception of Whistles. Oh and forget about the Waltonesque midi smock dresses, hideous on me.

Thanks for all the contributions xxx

I've got the Joanie ones linked to above in the teal colour and I love them. I have a similar body shape to you and I think they suit me.

Pasithea · 28/01/2022 18:57

@Classica

They're such a divisive garment. I will yay them for you and nay them for me. The Lucy and Yak ones would make me feel like I was part of Rod, Jane, and Freddy.
You have t looked at all the colours then.
KirstenBlest · 28/01/2022 19:25

I wear them a lot. L&Y style ones and denim.
Not sure how many pairs I have, a lot

The loose ones aren't a pain to go to the loo in.

I get lots of compliments on them

@Shinyandnew2022

Another dungaree Yay here - I have black ones from Baukjen and am absolutely loving them !

Now like the look of those Joanie Clothing ones has anyone got them or know how the sizing comes up please ?

The Joanie ones are pretty true to size. I'm a 12, but wear a 10 sometimes in places like sainsburys or Next. I bought a 12 and they fit well. They are more fitted than Lucy and yaks, which I would definitely size down for.

For future ref Finisterre do quite nice dungarees too - pricey though.

catwomando · 28/01/2022 19:30

I love my denim ones and wear them with docs. Very comfy and fun. I'm mid 50s. My DD wears similar and thinks I don't look stupid.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/01/2022 19:33

Bloody love dungarees. I have five pairs that I wear most of the year round, just with different tops depending on the weather. I'm 43.

Chishnfips · 28/01/2022 19:33

I like them but they don't look good on me so I don't wear them and I'm yet to see anyone wearing a pair out and about. It's the thing I've only ever seen on people online. I'm not convinced they're at all particle.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/01/2022 19:35

@gerispringer

I’ve had some denim Gap ones for ages and wear them doing the garden, but I’ve a cord Cos jumpsuit which I wear out and about - love it, I like the ones in your photo- go for it.

I've got a cord jumpsuit from Oasis which is my "go to" when I need something smarter than my dungas!

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 28/01/2022 19:50

An astounding YAY from me!!

I was always very dubious about trying them but I am so glad I did! I have a blue denim pair which makes my arse look MASSIVE but they are so comfy to wear! I have a black cord pair that are much more flattering :)

A friend of mine is in her 50s (I'm in my 20s) and she is my style icon! I bloody love her style and she ALWAYS wears dungarees! :)
yesbutnobut · 28/01/2022 20:03

The stylist @gaylerinkoff has got a post on instagram today with her wearing an array of dungarees - she looks great

Trolleedollee · 28/01/2022 20:04

@yesbutnobut Gayle rinkoff always looks amazing. She totally my style crush

yesbutnobut · 28/01/2022 22:49

@Trolleedollee I agree, she's fab isn't she? Wish I could pull off the bright pinks and reds she wears. I must admit I spent a good few minutes ranking her dungaree outfits from 1-6!!!

You look brill!

I am in green cord L&Y today, with a Henley tshirt and my ox blood DM loafers. And I feel quite smart.

Booksbooksbooks77 · 28/01/2022 23:38

Absolutely love those dungarees OP, go for it!!

RonCarlos · 28/01/2022 23:46

I never look at people in dungarees and think they look bad, in fact they often look stylish and comfy. On me however, they look dreadful.

LondonQueen · 28/01/2022 23:49

It's a no from me. They're very 70's and terribly unflattering/ageing

HeyitsAstrid · 29/01/2022 07:40

This is quite a helpful styling guide for dungarees.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2022 08:14

I wouldn't size down in Lucy&Yak dungarees. Their site has a size guide.
The dungarees don't look good snug
