Dungarees yay or nay?

mothtoaflame · 27/01/2022 20:32

I've been tempted to get some black cord dungarees for a while but haven't found any I have been able to try on. I saw a lovely pair in Oliver Bonas but they have now sold out and we're £85.

I'm a menopausal 44 year old who is reasonably slim with a pot belly. Where would I wear them and what with?

Have been living in sweaty Betty leggings and hoodies for the past few years as 100% wfh but want something new. Think I want to secretly re-visit my rave days....advice please.

I’ve had some denim Gap ones for ages and wear them doing the garden, but I’ve a cord Cos jumpsuit which I wear out and about - love it, I like the ones in your photo- go for it.

Craftycorvid · 28/01/2022 08:30

I have a pair of indigo denim ones from Toast and they are my ‘smart’ ones - just the right combination of not too loose but comfortable. Otherwise, my tastes in clothing do draw comments at times - usually of the ‘brave choice’ variety. Grin

beguilingeyes · 28/01/2022 08:50

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and they have loads of different ones.

daisyjgrey · 28/01/2022 08:51

@Huckleberries73

What’s wrong with Lucy and yak??

Absolutely nothing, they're also more size inclusive than a lot of the brands mentioned here.

notacooldad · 28/01/2022 09:01

Well seeing you asked generally about dungarees, to me they are joint first of my most hated garments on women. ( the other hated garment is polo neck jumpers)
I think they are impractical. Everyone I've seen in them looks like a childrens tv presenter and the Lucy and Yak ones just look juvenile.
I have really tried to change my opinion and have an open mind over the decades but it's still a no from me.

LadyDanburysHat · 28/01/2022 09:05

I have some black cord ones from Fat Face and love them. I got some cord ones from White Stuff too but they didn't suit me. I'm alos the same age as you.

LazyDoll · 28/01/2022 09:15

I love mine. Surprisingly good faded black ones from Tu. Wear worn rolled up with black DMs and a t shirt then bright Hush cardi or All Saints leather /denim jacket /Topshop leopard coat.

ChipButtyCurrySauce · 28/01/2022 09:18

I'm a couple of years older than you op. Bought a pair last summer from New Look. I wear a T-shirt underneath and white converse with the legs rolled up a bit. In the colder weather I wear them with DM boots. Pain to go to the toilet in but they're comfy!

Iamthewombat · 28/01/2022 09:19

If I were the type of woman who liked other women to wear unflattering garments, so that I shone in comparison, I’d say yes, go ahead, buy several pairs of dungarees and wear them all the time. I’m not, though, so I say a resounding no.

TrashyPanda · 28/01/2022 09:22

I’m in my late 50s and wear Lucy and Yak dungarees a lot.
Despite the hate on here, I get so many compliments from total strangers when I’m wearing them.
They are excellent quality and tons of choice.
Plus, they are a small business.

Chimchar · 28/01/2022 09:29

I love dungarees. I wear mine with a polo neck @notacooldad. You'd hate my look! 😂

I have a few pairs. I find my Lucy and yak ones much more flattering on my pot belly than my more fitted denim fat face ones.

You can dress them up or down.

I ALWAYS get compliments from women of all ages when I wear them.

I very often get silly comments from male colleagues such as "come on Eileen" "where are you painting first" "what are those things you're wearing?" "You're wearing dungarees!" Hmm

Get some. They're comfy, practical and have a completely different look to skirts, trousers, jeans so make your wardrobe go a bit further!

MidSizeMillie · 28/01/2022 09:35

I'm a little younger (and fatter) than you are and I love dungarees from Lucy and Yak. Very comfy. Not sure they're super stylish, but I like them and I also like the ethos of thee brand

Trolleedollee · 28/01/2022 09:47

These are quite nice

joanieclothing.com/bleecker-stretch-denim-dungarees-black.html

As are the Wyse ones and some in Boden

My issue with Lucy and Yak is the shapelessness of them. I keep going back on the website to see what I’m missing and my conclusion can only be that they’re so far from my style I’ll never get it. I like to look a put together and for me, the look is just too casual and scruffy.

notacooldad · 28/01/2022 09:49

Yes I would!!! But it's good that we are not identikits of each other!

I have no idea why I have an aversion to polo necks. Even as a child I hated them.

Comedycook · 28/01/2022 09:51

Absolutely detest dungarees. I find them very trendoid Shoreditch...I cringe so much. Ridiculous on babies and toddlers too.

MidSizeMillie · 28/01/2022 09:53

You need to play around with the L&Y dungarees. I have to go down a dress size and then it's a matter of getting the strap length right and rolling up the legs. They aren't aren't everyone's taste.

I saw a woman in a mini skirt and tight top at a playground recently, with a Cath Kidston bag. I thought "that is my nightmare outfit", but she seemed perfectly lovely and happy! It isn't a personal attack to me if people don't like me dungas Grin. Or anything else in my wardrobe.

Toddlers in dungarees are glorious! I will die on this hill 😂

showmethegin · 28/01/2022 10:28

@daisyjgrey I have bought an embarrassing amount of dungarees for our still in utero offspring!

Comedycook · 28/01/2022 10:34

@daisyjgrey. They can look cute on toddlers and babies but they're an absolute pain for nappy changing and potty training....so impractical

daisyjgrey · 28/01/2022 11:11

@showmethegin don't be embarrassed, embrace the cute!

@Comedycook ahhh all of the ones my daughter had had poppers underneath so it made it less of a faff for happy changes. I agree with the potty training though, a definite dungaree hiatus while doing that.

Yes I agree, you can size down for a less slouchy look and I always order a long leg (although I'm v short) and cuff them so they sit above my ankle. I also saw a woman recently who had changed the fastening to a normal dungaree clasp and button and it looked really good, simple to do as well.

I also get a lot of comments of L&Y dungarees, although I only wear the original cord ones and generally in quite muted colours. Tbh they've made me utterly furious at anything with a waistband now.

ofwarren · 28/01/2022 11:17

Dungarees are always Yay.
I love them all, L&Y, Run&Fly and even the supermarkets did some lovely ones last summer.
So comfortable and no horrible waistband to deal with.

lilkiki · 28/01/2022 11:20

I love dungarees!
But I prefer the ones that look a bit more 70s. Tighter top half and wider leg!

MidSizeMillie · 28/01/2022 11:28

Yes, those are gorgeous too. I don't suit them, but they're fantastic on other people
Shinyandnew2022 · 28/01/2022 15:04

Another dungaree Yay here - I have black ones from Baukjen and am absolutely loving them !

Now like the look of those Joanie Clothing ones has anyone got them or know how the sizing comes up please ?
